This just in on Scifi Japan: Shout! Factory has changed the font on the Gamera vs. Zigra/Super Monster Gamera DVD case!!! Stay tuned tomorrow for our exciting new article about how Shout! Factory will be releasing Gamera vs. Zigra/ Super Monster Gamera on DVD March 15th!!! For further reading, check out our previous articles about Shout! Factory acquiring Gamera vs. Zigra/Super Monster Gamera for American DVD release and Shout! Factory releasing Gamera vs. Zigra/Super Monster Gamera on DVD!!!

Meanwhile, somewhere on Toho Kingdom someone has yet again created a duplicate Shout Factory Gamera DVD thread.

(I'm just teasing you, KPA :P )

As I've said before, I can't wait for this release.

Are you the kind of person who hates All Monsters Attack, yet finds Gamera: The Super Monster to be a decent movie? The two aren't the same. One is better than the other. :|

Showa Gamera, anyone?

Post by therealmccoy »

First off, I know the Gamera movies were pretty poor, but there are some people who like them. I'm one of them. If you're not, and just want to bash Gamera, please don't do it here. I don't want to start any fights, I just want to see if anyone wants to talk about Gamera, since this is a non-Toho media discussion board. So if you feel like talking, feel free. If you feel like trashing, please don't. I criticize these movies, but criticizing and bashing are different. So, talk away, and thanks.

I love these for the same reason I love Sentai, because it's goofy and fun.

My first ever Gamera movie was Super Monster, and I don't care what anyone says; it's my favorite. Stock footage, mediocre acting, annoying kids and all.

Since I bought all the Shout! releases I remember thinking that if the dubs weren't so shitty they would have been taken more seriously. I know alot of people like the dubs, but let's face it, Sandy Frank or whoever, they were exactly what I said: shitty. But then again, if they weren't so bad, what would MST3K have to make fun of?

On-topic: I've said it already. Gamera vs. Gyaos is my favorite from the Showa series.

I don't believe the Japanese versions were meant to be taken very seriously, either. The ones after BARUGON or GYAOS, at least.

Yeah, I think after the first three they realized nobody but kids were watching, so that's why they made them all wierd and childish.

God only knows what they were on when they made any of them. I remember reading a comment like this and thinking, "Which one after Gyaos was the most believable?" To this day I still don't have an answer. Barugon and Gyaos were fairly believable, but the rest? A knife-headed monster, a squid with a head that peels like a banana, a goblin shark from space, and , well I just don't know what to say about Jiger, she just looks wierd. Definitely on something.

Please. As if the whole idea of giant monsters were even remotley believable.
Comes to show how people just don't look to the possibilities while watching movies.

I enjoy those movies, I let my mind wander, and when they're over, I come back to reality. They're no fun if one has no imagination.

That's why we have critics. ;)

The critics have lots of fun with these. Like in Zigra, where they spend the first ten minutes of the movie talking about how they should brush their teeth and be smart like the dolphins. A critics dream come true.

These movies were packed in a set that had Gappa and Yonggary, so they really were the best thing in that case. Anyways, I can't watch more than one of these a day...they are just too weird for me sometimes. It's one of those "i need to be in the right mood" situations. I do like Gamera vs Monster X though. That one was at least...decent...maybe

I know what set you're talking about, I have it. I bought it because it was like $4.00 or something. And yes, the Gamera movies were the highlight of the set. Gappa: not so bad. Yongary: shit. The Gamera movies looked worn, but not near as bad as those two. That's what you get when you shop at Wal-Mart for monster movies. It wasn't a complete waste, though. It made me buy the Shout! DVDs.

They're terribly cheesy, but that's not a bad thing. Few things bring a smile to my face quicker than some turtle arcobatics or that wonderful theme song.
