I've only seen the pilot episode so far. I liked it. Written for kids. But still enjoyable.

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
Just watched the first episode (movie? Thing was almost 2 hours!)
I like it! It's clearly aimed at kids... but not as young as I was anticipating. Id say like the 10-12 range. It reminds me of 80s/90s action cartoons.
Mild Spoilers for the pilot ahead.
The plot is pretty straight forward, but it jumps around alot. Kong and his friends move to a new home 3 times in the first episode... which was kinda weird, but I guess it was necessary for the plot. There is also a heavy "Humans are ruining the environment" moral throughout. Which is nice... it's handled differently then this subject usually is, focusing more on protecting wildlife and nature. But it is pretty forced.
The human characters are alot better then I thought they would be. Reminds me alot of HEAT from GTS. Although they aren't really too fleshed out. You have the generic leader, the generic kid, the generic girl, the generic black guy, and then there's this Hispanic lady who I think is the maid... but she doesn't really clean... idk...
Kong is cool. Very goofy version of the big guy. He likes to good off and have fun. But he is pretty badass when fighting honestly. There's one scene where he uses a freakin' Pteranodon as a knife to slice up other Pteranodons. One thing I don't understand is why kong is so big though. it's never explained (yet...). He is just a baby gorilla, and suddenly he grows 50 feet tall. The characters do address this... but I kid you not, it's just like "huh... that's weird."... and then the show continues.
The villian is a neat idea. He hates Kong and always has. And will constantly try to destroy him. His main arsenal is built up of cybernetic Dinosaurs... which was a hobby of his since he was a kid?... okay.
I thought the whole "power up unlocked" thing throughout the show was really dumb at first, but then I found the Kong Battles at the end of each episode, which utilize the power ups he unlocks during the show. That was pretty cool. I also like the "watch the next episode to unlock the next battle" gimmick.
So far just based on the first episode, easily a 7/10. Not great... but fun. Will buy at least a Kong action figure. I would like a video game. That could be fun.

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
I too watched that feature-length pilot last night. It's was alright, about the same level as most of the sci-fi adventure kid's cartoons I watch. Kong is a bit goofy, but it did make the character a bit more enjoyable. I might get around to checking out some more episodes.
I still assume this is a reboot of the 2000's cartoon, with the theme song, Kong's blue color, a villain with robotic parts, and a few other similarities. Can't say I'm a fan of the dinosaurs being robots or Kong Island being a amusement part ala Jurassic World. It just felt thrown together to keep in touch with the original.
I do hope they at least try to discover Kong's origin later on, and maybe even have it turn out he's from a lost island. The baby gorilla growing huge just doesn't do it for me, though there's a lot of lazy writing in this show so far when it comes to science.
I think my favorite part of the show is the villains though. They're pretty well done, even if a bit generic.

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
Watching the next episide now. A few predictions for the rest of the series based on stuff I've seen so far. Again, mild spoilers.
-each episode will feature a new cybernetic Dinosaur/Giant animal to fight. We saw the dinosaurs in the first episode and he fights a kong sized cyber snake in this episode.
-Kong will be completely covered in armor at the end of the season. So far he has been equipped with arm gauntlets, and a body piece that allows him to be picked up by helicoptor. I'm betting he will have a full on set of armor by the finale.
-Kong will have a few powers throughout the series. He just unlocked Invisibility.
-Botella, the villians robotic assistant will side with the good guys by the series end.
Changing topic. Wow. Unlocking new power ups will let you choose a power up to use in the battles between episodes. And choosing them can affect wether or not Kong wins or loses. That's actually pretty neat.

It's not a reboot of that series, non of the characters are the same, there's no fuson aspect like in the old series, or even the plot points. It is weird though how STRONGLY similar the 2 theme songs are.Starsteam wrote:I still assume this is a reboot of the 2000's cartoon, with the theme song, Kong's blue color, a villain with robotic parts, and a few other similarities.

I'm six episodes in and I'm enjoying it. It's so crazy you kind of just have to throw your hands up and embrace it for what it is (or not watch it).KaijuFiend wrote:The new Kong show sounds batshit insane, in a fun way

Only watched that first episode/movie so far. I mean it's okay, but definitely not intended to interest as wide a demographic as I hoped.Birdman wrote:Has anyone has the pleasure/displeasure of seeing the new Netflix show yet?

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
SPOILER ALERT!
Finished the season!
The show doesn't get really any better, don't expect much at all. But there was one interesting tidbit during the last episode.
The team talks about finding where king came from throughout the last episode, and Kong ends up running off to find his true home, and it ends with Kong and a few of the characters falling down a volcano into a "Journey to the Center of the Earth" style lost world complete with real, non cyber Dinosaurs! So there is a Skull Island style home for kong!
Now I'm hoping for a season 2 for them to fix this seasons issues, and tell us more about this shows Kongs origins!

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
So... theory.
Is the 2000 animated series a sort of sequel to the 1976 film?
Nothing really hints at that other then one opening shot during the intro where Kong looks at the Twin Towers. Which Kong climbed in place of the Empire State Building in the '76 remake.
Could this mean that this was made as a follow up to that film?

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
The "Return to the Jungle" movie established the 2000 series takes place after the 1933 movie, but not in a direct-canon way. Plus I seem to recall a episode where Kong gets flashbacks of the original Kong, who is climbing the ESB. I think the opening shot in the intro is more of a homage to the 1976 movie.Zilla103192 wrote:So... theory.

Watching the new Kong series. The park thing is literally taken from Jurassic World. Not thats it's bad, it's amazing. The pilot was amazing. Loved it.

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
Finished Kong: King of the Apes. My verdict: it's okay.
I thought the first few episodes we're promising but after a while it's start to feel padded out. One thing that both Godzilla animated series had going for them was a formula of Godzilla battling a new monster each episode. Kong: King of the Apes doesn't really do that, and after the first few episodes, the monster/dino battles largely get dropped in favor of other side quests (which mostly consist of either rescuing other endangered animals or developing some new technology for Kong). That, and there were some bouts of bathroom humor along the way that felt dumb and shoehorned in. It's a shame because I was enjoying it for the first half or so, but it just never picked up steam as it went on (save for one surprisingly cool episode where Kong gets shrunk).

The stupid thing is Botilla could easily overthrow Richard and had several times to, but didn't....it's the biggest tease ever.

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
Yeah, that get's dragged on for a looonnng time. As simplistic as it is, I probably would've enjoyed the show more if it was just a constant format of Richard building new creations, and Kong fighting them (with some variation in between). Another disappointment I had is that we don't really get any new bots/creatures beyond those in the first few episodes. Instead we see Kong fight the same T. Rex and Pterodactyl bots over and over.ernesth100 wrote:The stupid thing is Botilla could easily overthrow Richard and had several times to, but didn't....it's the biggest tease ever.

I know, it really drags on. I kept expecting something new but the only time they did something new was the Bionic Snake.
They did work with what they had tho. Fight scenes while repetitive were creative at times.

It's a cool take on Kong to be sure, I just felt like they used up a lot of their ambition early on.ernesth100 wrote:I know, it really drags on. I kept expecting something new but the only time they did something new was the Bionic Snake.

Re: King Kong Tribute Thread (THE REAL KING KONG!)
True true, another thing I don't understand is what were the powerups at the bottom of the screen that never got used for?
Edit: Officially finished the series. They ended on the worst possible Cliff Hanger ever. I mean, now if this series doesn't get renewed thats just sad. Made me angry but oh well it's just a show.
