The Illustrated encyclopedia of Godzilla

Post by G-MAN »

As its near impossible to come across a copy nowa days seeing as its been so long since it was printed in the 90's, would anyone here happen to have a pdf or scans of it? As I know I'm not the only fan who has been dying for two decades to read it

I don't think I've ever heard of this? Do you know any details about it?

Toho hit it with a cease and desist order, Ed says because of the sheer amount of photos he used along with using Godzilla's image on the cover (unlike Steve Ryfle's book, which had the advantage of seeing what got Ed into trouble with Toho). So it was never to be reprinted with less than a thousand sold, and generally goes for $100-$150 when it shows up for sale.

Some terrible scans of my copy: http://s32.photobucket.com/user/spacegh ... t=9&page=1
It's the beginning of the book and then the meat of it. Also met Ed at G-Fest (2014) and got his signature along with a Heisei Mecha-Godzilla.

Generally only on eBay, occasionally a kaiju dealer will have one.

Had no idea so many pictures floating around actually came from this book... Definitely keeping tabs on it, though I don't expect to see a copy up anywhere anytime soon.

Anyone who has a copy willing to scan it to preserve it for the fan base?

It pops up on eBay every couple of months. I almost got it for $85 a few years ago and then someone ninja'ed me and got it for $86. I consider Ed G the top 1 or 2 Godzilla "scholars" of all time. Order all back issues of Japanese Giants if you can

When their Ishiro Honda biography is eventually released, it'd be nice to see Godziszewski and Ryfle join forces again and coauthor a new Godzilla history book that's sort of a hybrid between their two previous tomes from the 90s. Ryfle has expressed interest in updating Japan's Favorite Mon-Star before. I know Godzilla will always be a niche property and a hard sale but with American and Japanese films being made concurrently it's a great opportunity for Japanese sci-fi historians to take advantage and get stuff out there for newcomers to the genre.

Whether you realize it or not, what you're really asking is for someone to destroy their copy "for the fanbase". One day, someone in the fanbase will enjoy my copy because I didn't scan it, and I will enjoy the money they paid to obtain one in near-new shape. Forcing the open book to lay flat for scanning would destroy the binding and destroy any value it has as a rare collectible.

Reviving a dead thread here.

I own this book and I'm wondering if the information in the book is canon? Can it be used as a reliable source?

Yes. It was written by Ed G who is one of the top Godzilla historians around. Now just remember to sell it to Godzilla21 when you are done with it ;)
