GODZILLA IN HELL #3 - REACTION THREAD
Out next Wednesday, the 30th! Finally. I've been really intrigued by this one, what with Mothra angels and all that.

What the fuck is with the variant cover though. That pisses me off.

Whoa surprised by that monster right on the first page. Whoa at the page 3 preview! I think I'm starting to want this artist to have their own mini already.

It seems that this issue will be like the first one in the sense that there are no words in the story, just pictures.

I remember when they used this picture in a cover. I can't remember what series it was. I'm guessing it was Kingdom of Monsters or Gangsters and Goliaths.

Don't forget #12 and #13 of Kingdom of Monsters, which also had a Godzilla clearly based on a figure (and it's more guilty since they used it twice in a row).
TBH lots of comics use toys as models... but is's pretty bad when they draw the articulation seams into it.
I think I am going to have to pre-order that cover too... edit: Nope, already pre-ordered it despite having no idea of how it looked. Guess I didn't like the regular cover enough.

That would be Godzilla #1.GODZILLA2877 wrote:I remember when they used this picture in a cover. I can't remember what series it was. I'm guessing it was Kingdom of Monsters or Gangsters and Goliaths.
Everything on all four of that guy's covers (#9-12) were lifted from existing images. I remember somebody even found the original image of the destroyed buildings seen on issue #10.Starsteam wrote:Don't forget #12 and #13 of Kingdom of Monsters, which also had a Godzilla clearly based on a figure (and it's more guilty since they used it twice in a row).
I like the general style but some of the panels do look really weird, like the panel I used in the first post.PopInPicsPresents wrote:Can't say I'm a fan of the art

Re: GODZILLA IN HELL #3 - REACTION THREAD
A few things:
1. The sub cover is awesome, I don't really care if it was referenced off some figure. It's not the exact same thing and the contrast between it and the Mothra butterfly is cool.
2. The copyrights are wrong or at least misleading. Mothra clearly has some involvement though perhaps she doesn't directly appear. Mothra fairies?
3. For not being in hell the first five pages still seem absolutely amazing. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN HELL
4. The first five pages have the most dramatic things to ever happen in Godzilla and imply so much shit. Basically if you look on the panels there's a shot of the moon blown up and the earth is fucking ugly. My guess is that Godzilla has been fighting Spacegodzilla and their battle, as well as other participants has pretty much destroyed everything.
Also:
FINALLY SPACEGODZILLA AND GODZILLA GET A PROPER FIGHT IN THE COMICS. HOLY SHIT SG SUCKED ASS IN HGM and ROE
@Mr. X: what exactly pisses you off about the variant cover?

That it's traced. I find that completely inexcusable, especially when part of what you do for a living is draw. It aggravates me that it's happened several times with these comics.LSD Jellyfish wrote:@Mr. X: what exactly pisses you off about the variant cover?

Re: GODZILLA IN HELL #3 - REACTION THREAD
SG was handled well in issue 17 and 21+22. He looked great in all three issues and he did do some cool things. But, my comment was about how he never really got a proper climactic fight with Godzilla and now he finally gets one which is awesome.
Regarding the posing:
I didn't realize it's traced. I just assumed it was him posing the figure. Then I realized it is just traced off of the image from online. 5$ The butterfly is traced too. That right there ruined everything, thanks for exposing a fraud.
It's a shame because the contrast between Godzilla and the Mothra butterfly is actually cool and I actually like how Godzilla looks there. What's worse is that IDW does have Godzilla regulars who would have probably been more than happy to do more covers (Eagleton, Matt and Zornow), shame it came to this. But yeah, at least it's not as generic and -------- as the stuff that went on in KOM.
Also I've been meaning to ask:
On the first page there's obviously a destroyed mecha, and another which is probably MG. But, on the top left hand corner there's straight up some weird mecha samurai looking head. What is that! A reference?
Also, seems like SG has not only his corona beam but a cool beam that's similar to Godzillas.

The use of a lightbox to "trace" images onto a blank canvas has been going on in comic books for decades, sometimes because the artist is lazy, probably more often because artists have to churn out multiple pages a day to make a living at it and the lightbox makes for an easy shortcut when deadlines are looming. Check out this NYT article on Homage vs Theft!LSD Jellyfish wrote:Regarding the posing:

Good eye with the thing in the first panel! It's a Gundam head.
A homage is one thing - this panel from Matt Frank referencing this Marvel cover is a homage, and a really awesome one at that. I'm not saying homages have to be as different from the source as that was, but, like said in the article, you have to add your own twist to it.G1985 wrote:The use of a lightbox to "trace" images onto a blank canvas has been going on in comic books for decades, sometimes because the artist is lazy, probably more often because artists have to churn out multiple pages a day to make a living at it and the lightbox makes for an easy shortcut when deadlines are looming. Wow. Did they, like, blew up the Moon? Also, I see the remains of MOGUERA, Mechagodzilla (Showa probably?) and some weird robot head. What is that, an easter egg? Awesome.

Like, why does he walk with his hands facing palm up? That looks so awkward.
The plot twist is Godzilla's just looking for his damn car. His hands are facing palm up as if telling the world 'What the skreeonk'

The Easter Egg was addressed above, it's a Gundam head.

What a great preview! Did you guys spot the Power Rangers helmet?
Ulises Farinas and Erick Freitas, those guys are crazy Japanese Sci-Fi fans, check out GAMMA, put out through Dark Horse, if you like their take on Godzilla. It's kind of a "What-If Ash Ketchum and Pikachu grow up to lead a Tokusatsu army against the monster apocalypse.... and FAIL." Farinas does the art on GAMMA too, and it shows his true talent, rather than the strange Photoshop variant-thing going on with this issue's variant cover.

First page, third panel, below MOGUERA's remains. Though I'm not sure about it now.Mr. X wrote:Where do you see MG?Skeleturtle wrote:Wow. Did they, like, blew up the Moon? Re: GODZILLA IN HELL #3 - REACTION THREAD
It is so embarrassing to see that black and white cover. How could they be so lazy and make such an obvious mistake of showing a drawing, traced or not, of an SHMA figure INCLUDING the articulation seam? And that moth, I have a feeling that moth's picture was grabbed from the net.
