This has come up before, but what in the world is going on over in the video game forum right now?

Could someone please - as simply and as accurately as possible - explain to me what Chris, Matt and Simon are trying to accomplish here? Is this just an unlicensed fan-game that the three are going to attempt to put together using fan funds and a developer. Or are they somehow seriously planning this from the ground up, using fan money to fund it and then are going to find a publisher and attempt to get the license from Toho?

If it's the latter, do they really think this is going to happen? And if it's the former, I really don't see the big deal. It's a fan game, nothing more. A licensed title with Toho-approval is something to be excited about. Fan art. Fan fiction. Fan games. In the end none of it is official, so I really don't see why it's a big deal.

Either way, what it's done to the forum is eye opening. Do people really NEED a new Godzilla video game this bad? All this "idea" really seems to be doing is giving members an outlet for all their random, hypothetical "what if" ideas that in the past have all been combined to the "New Toho Game Idea" thread, only now there are far too many threads related to this "game" to count at this point.

And when/if it comes out all they're gonna be is disappointed because it wasn't exactly what they wanted, and then they'll bitch and moan about how disappointed they were about the game until news of another game comes around, and the cycle repeats.

Simon owns his own independent company and has purchased the rights for the engine that Pipeworks used for all 3 games. A large part of his crew is composed to people who worked on those games. The plan is to raise around $300,000 via Kickstarter (a donations website that doesn't charge you unless the project meets its target donation amount) to fund a game that Simon and his company would make and release themselves. As the project is all funded via the fan community, there doesn't need to be a profit incentive. Not needing a publisher like Atari also means there are no time restraints; everything can take as long as it needs to be right. Simon is also in contact with Toho about the Godzilla licensing. Should that fall through for whatever reason, the plan is to still make the game, but with potentially another licensed franchise or a cast of original monsters.

This isn't just some fan-made game. This is a real, professional game that would be made (just with input from the community).

So it's a game, on the same engine as the other 3 carbon copies, being worked on by some of the same crew and staff?

Hey can I ask for money from members on TK for stuff?

If it helps, I can say Im going to use it to buy the rights to Return of Godzilla/G85 and put it out on Blu-Ray.

Lol Legion you crack me up man. Seriously though, things like this bother me. Hand outs and creativity seldom work well together. If you work is good enough then it will stand out, and people will pay you for your work which IS different from people just giving you money to realize your vision (fine if your very close friends and family want to help you out but asking the internet to financially support you is stinks of a sense of entitlement I think).

That doesn't necessitate that it will be like those games. From what it looks like, the combat system is going to be rebuilt from the ground up. Which means all that's really going to make it like the Pipeworks games is just the fact that it will superficially look a lot like GU (although texturing will be better, as will overall character design).

You absolutely can do this, but I don't think anyone has any faith whatsoever that you can actually obtain the rights or produce a Blu-Ray.

Yeah I feel about the same way towards that. I guess I'll ask for money too...so that I don't have to work at a job and I can write the best Godzilla fan fic ever!!!!

Again, you are free to go ahead and attempt this, but no one is going to give you money anyway because writing fan fiction doesn't cost anything in the first place.

Your request falls into the same category as wataru's. You can try, but I don't think anyone believe you have the connections or ability to produce a toy.

Don't get me wrong, I'd very much like to be proven wrong, that their project succeeds and is a legitimately compelling game. I'm just not impressed by what I've heard, and have even less interest in putting ideas or money into it.
