Because Toho says they're two different monsters. The 1998 monster IS Godzilla, whether fans like it or not. He's copywritten as such. The monster from GFW is officially named Zilla. Two separate animals.

I've lost track of how many times folks refer to the '98 Godzilla as "Zilla." It's pretty annoying.

They'll go "I just got the Trendmasters Zilla" and it's like "what the Hell?"

Who cares about the whole GINO and Zilla debate. Yeah they are not the same character but to me, they are pretty much the same thing. They both look and act the same. Does it really matter if fans give the Tristar Godzilla's a harmless nick name like "Zilla '98"?

My whine is that people act like they're confused if someone says Gino or Zilla or w/e. It's not like the two creatures look different and considering we know nothing at all about the FW Zilla there's very, very little reason that anyone needs to qualify the name any more. There's no real reason for anyone to not think they're not the same creatures, certainly no more reason than there is in thinking they aren't the same.

It's just splitting hairs and semantics. If you talk about either/or, I'd like to think we all know who you're talking about and there's no discernible difference between the two; power-sets, looks, roughly the same size, etc. One has a back-story, one has a minute of screen-time; why not overlap the two? What is the harm?

I think it's one of those things whose practicality outweighs the incorrect usage. Using "Zilla" to refer to that specific monster design in general simply saves you four syllables versus saying "Godzilla '98" all the time.

I just say Godzilla and hope people understand the right context. Given that it is the proper conversation.

And given that I'm talking to people who would understand the "Zilla design" statement. Most of the time, I'm not talking to anyone that does. So the point is moot in my case.

This isn't really a whine, but something I can't help but facepalm at, and that's people threatening to leave TK aka desperate pleas for attention. I've seen it happen on several occasions and while I don't feel like naming names it's just extremely silly. The fandom will go on without you involved in it, so if you feel the need to take a break from it, just skreeonk' do it! The people you're friends with will know how to get in touch with you, and the rest of us won't miss you.

I left old TK and stayed away through the changeover and about 14 months time. Didn't announce it because my life is good enough that I don't need to fish for cheap compliments on the Internet.

Anyways I use Zilla because it's easier than American Godzilla or Godzilla 98. Also it might confuse/offend some people by calling him just Godzilla?
