I have a DVD of a VHS rip that starts off with an Alan Enterprises logo. It might be from a Disney Channel broadcast in the mid 90's when they used to show movies without commercial breaks. The audio is dual channel mono and seems pretty decent.

I suppose it's possible that earlier tape was a generation or two closer to the original TV master, but considering that it came out in '87 I doubt whether any advantages it might have over the Goodtimes release haven't been worn away over time.

Version 2.0 is now available! Ultrase7en provided me his VHS rip which had vastly superior audio. Plus, the movie is now 2 whole seconds longer! No, it isn't anything revelatory - just a few extra seconds of the dance competition - but still, it's interesting that the Goodtimes VHS cuts it out.

PM me for the link!

Finally got around to downloading and sampling this - the increase in sound quality is nothing short of incredible!

Gonna do Son of Godzilla in the future?

How big is the file and is the quality comparable to the kraken bluray? Just ask because I've went really interesting and cool fan restorations of some films that blow it for me by using a HD source and making it less than dvd quality or just making it less than dvd quality by making it such a small file size to allow easier downloads

I've been thinking about it...the only thing holding me back is that I don't have an HD source to work from. I could potentially use Sony's DVD and make an SD version, but I would rather wait for a proper blu release.

Right now, the file size is indeed just around 5GB. There are two reasons: First, I simply don't have the space right now to make a video with lossless compression. Second, the video source given to me by Red Menace was already compressed to around the same file size.

I do plan on revisiting this once I have my own bluray burner and new hard-drives so I can make a 1:1 lossless rip of the Kraken bluray and render a proper MKV file, but I just bought a house and therefore have plenty of other expenses to attend to before turning my attention to upgrading my workstation. I'm hoping the holidays bring some good presents ;)

It's a shame I didn't find out about MakeMKV and such earlier, or else I could've sent an uncompressed rip. I've actually been thinking about doing a less compressed version myself but I've been holding off on it mainly because I didn't want to overshadow goji1986's excellent work or infringe on their territory. It's also been a pretty low priority since I've been working on the upgraded Godzilla 1985.

If there's interest once I've gotten that done, though, it would be a pretty quick and easy job and I'd be happy to do it, provided goji1986 doesn't mind.

To be honest, I'd like to see this through to the end. Getting the burner is my top priority because I do other professional video work and the upgrade would be beneficial beyond this kind of stuff, so believe me when I say it's happening (soon, too). Thank you for your consideration, omgitsgodzilla :)

And thank you everyone for your patience! It will be coming in due time.

As promised, I have just bought the burner (got a great Cyber Monday deal for it off of Newegg!). I am in the process of making the Bluray-quality version as we speak.

Tonight I'm planning on hitting the shiny EXPORT button! I spent a little extra time adding chapter stops that I hope will translate onto the MKV file (I'm exporting from Adobe Premiere CC, which doesn't support the format so there's going to be an extra transcode via Handbrake).

Loving the new burner!

Added in 5 hours 10 minutes 35 seconds:
Aaaaand it's ready! PM me for the link to download. Be advised, the MKV is 20GB, so make sure you have plenty of storage space!

Fantastic! I'm on a bus home from visiting some folks right now, but as soon as I can get back to my computer I'll be downloading this and giving it a watch!

Awesome!

What BD burner did you end up with? I am looking for a burner myself.

Thank you for the work you did on this.

I went with an ASUS burner. It's a solid piece and very quiet.

Just watched it last night; it looks excellent! I also noticed some interesting things about the dub itself. It looks like the people who wrote/recorded the dubbed dialogue knew how it was going to be cropped for TV, because when Ichino notices Ryota staring blankly at the dance contest, he says something in the dub despite not moving his mouth, and later on when Nita is about to make the "You and us are friends" gesture to Daiyo, he clearly moves his mouth to say "Hey," but there's no line there.
