Well, Star Wars was kind of a fan film. Basically it was a love letter to 1940s sci-fi adventure serials. It's sort of like that: It's using one's talents to show appreciation to a franchise by creating one's own take on it.

I'd like to see more of that than remakes, reboots, etc. That Spielberg/Lucas era is long gone..

But they are original characters and stories (somewhat)
Don't try to be something else. Don't try to be less. Great things are going to happen in your life. Great things. And with that will come great responsibility.

They're pure archetypes, but they are at the same time rather original. And most of the fan films I've seen have original stories - the Star Wars fan films often show EU events as interpreted by the filmmaker, and Godzilla fan films often have very few recurring characters to use anyway, and so little continuity that creating your own story is only natural.

Why would you want to work with a set of characters that aren't your original creations? Plus, since it is a fan film designed for fan consumption, you'll probably get bitch at because that's all fans can do. At least the lazy ones.

I'd much rather express my own original ideas.

That's pretty much why I ditched doing Godzilla fan art and began designing my original kaiju such as Olragon so I can use them to tell my own story rather than utilizing any of Toho's characters.

This whole thing about Franz sucks as well. Back when GZH was in production I was an avid member of his forum. Back in the early days of GZH's production, Franz really inspired me, and was the reason I did two animated battle shorts involving Olragon (which he praised for the creative use of original kaiju). It's a real shame that he shut down production entirely just because he got too frustrated with it. Truth is, many movie directors get frustrated with their films, but none are as irresponsible to scrap it entirely.

I admit, in my earlier days as an artist, I made many promises that I never kept. However, unlike Franz, I managed to pump something out from time to time, because I owe it to those who follow and appreciate my work.

The thing about fan art and fanfilms is they can help a creator tap into a built-in audience for that material, develop a following based on their unique interpretations and executions of said material, and then those fans they gain will (ideally) follow them over to their own original endeavors. People often respond better to things they are already familiar with so hypothetically, a Godzilla fan will have a more immediate positive reaction to a wicked piece of Godzilla, become a fan of the artist who created it, then they will respond better to a great original work by that artist than they would have initially.

I get what you're saying. I never forget that it was doing Godzilla art that got people to follow me on DeviantArt, and occasionally I'll do some fan art. However a large majority of my work is all original material.

Hrm. See, I still do fan art. Mainly because I've got nothing better to do with my time (what precious time I do have)...

Of course, for every fan project I do, I've got some original project that parallels.

Do I retract my statement said? No. I just expand upon it.

And sometimes it's just fun to create an original story with the characters we all know and love.

Haven't thought about this thing in years but does anyone have any of the footage that was mentioned earlier in the thread or perhaps the trailer cuz I use to watch that all the time when I was younger

So that's why the film was never finished. And wow this guy sounded like a real A-Hole to boot. Can't belive he had the nerve to say that his film will be better then the actual Toho films! People like that don't deserve to call themselves true Godzilla fans.
