Some of the redesigns he's done are well-done, and others... not so much.

I can tell, either way, that he's put a lot of work into not only the art, but also the whole backstory behind them. I was pretty impressed reading the bios and crap on DA.

...Why is this in the Media Center?

Anyway, I enjoy some of Matt's redesigns, but he really is kind of hit and miss. Some are good, like MOGUERA and Baragon. But others are just down right terrible, like King Ghidorah, Rodan and somewhat Godzilla.

People overhype him and make him out to be some sort of god, but really he's just someone who likes to draw. I don't see any reason to take him as seriously as some people do.

I like quite lot of his redesigns, but his Ganimes and Titanosaurus ones were pretty bad if you ask me.

Although his Godzilla Neo redesigns are hit and miss, he's still both a fantastic artist and a dedicated fan. He really puts his all into his art. And his work outside of Godzilla Neo is simply amazing.

The man is an utterly amazing artist. His more traditional works are proof of that. He's just really... not good with redesigns. He's made a few good ones (moreso recently, after some people more publicly voiced their distaste for many of his redesigns), but the vast majority range from just generally blah to utterly unrecognizeable as the characters they're supposed to represent. A lot of them also suffer from trying far too hard to be "OMGWTF X-TREME TO THE MAX!!!!"

And he has the most obnoxious, obsessive fans of any artist I've ever seen. Most of them know nothing of the franchise and treat his works as though they're the greatest things ever inked. It's not uncommon to see comments along the lines of "I've never heard of this monster before, but this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen!" and "OMG! The original version of this monster looked soooooo crappy, but this is awesome!" I honestly have more of a problem with them than I do MF's art.

Also, this should be in Fan Art. I miss my mod powahs. :(

It's somewhat hard for me to sum up my thoughts on this guy. Being a wannabe artist myself, I can't help but respect the guy and his work. He's even given me some personal advice through deviantart. He's very blunt and forward, but he had a lot to say and was very inspiring.
As for his Godzilla NEO series, I honestly don't care for them. It's not just the redesign and his take on these characters, but a lot of it has to do with the way he uses his color palette. I simply just don't care for his coloring style. I much prefer his black and white sketches. He's really quite good with his line quality. If you haven't, check out some of his sketches, which I think are in his scrapbook. I honestly enjoy them much more than I do his Godzilla NEO stuff.

I typically enjoy his work, and when I dont, I dont make a big deal out of it. If some talented artist out there wants to take his own spin on a monster by all means let him do so.

What I dislike are the rabid fanboys. If you visit his DA page you really see all the blabbering idiots who insist that Frank is the source and epitome of all things kaiju. Its embaressing for almost everyone involved.

I like his stuff. Like any artist some pieces are better than others, but I think people get too upset about it. I only realy disliked his Minilla because it was a crazy anime character.

Because illustrations are media.

Matt's great. Great guy, great artist. Some of his Godzilla Neo stuff isn't exactly going in the direction that it should be going, but most of it is pretty good.

I think he is a great artist, I love all the hard work that he puts in his art. I enjoy some of Matt's redesigns like his Anguirus redesign, but I'm not too crazy over the rest of the redesigns in the Godzilla NEO series.

I actually like most of his redesigns, to see them in motion in an animated movie would be cool, live action, nah.

I believe Matt mentioned once or twice that he has gone for an anime-esque style for his work. Honestly, an anime based on the universe he's created wouldnt be that bad.

Matt Frank is an incredible artist looking at his traditional works, particularly I noticed his brief pair of illustrations based on Godzilla Raids Again, but I have a strong dislike for Godzilla Neo - I wasn't super fond of a lot of the designs to begin with, and then I had a couple friends who liked his work barking at me and such. What really pisses me off about Neo though is when people suggest Toho take the ideas. There's a lot of fandom ideas I have positively loved, but most of them would make horrible films.

No they wouldn't make horrible films, they just would look silly on film.

While Matt Frank's redesigns are something of a controversy among the fandom, I think we can all agree that he's a great artist. I mean sure, there are certain redesigns that aren't exactly good, but at least he has redesigns that level the playing field. I think we can all admit that Matt isn't the worst offender in terms of redesign.

I don't care for his anime-ish style because I don't care for anime.

But he's a mad good artist.

Here's an example of his better work IMO It's not Neo, but it is Godzilla.

Yeah, matt's an awesome artist. He's actually my role model (you know, art-wise). Honestly, I don't think he intended G Neo to take off like it did. At G-Fest, he got annoyed (only slightly, mind you) whenever someone asked about it. And this is my favorite of his peices: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&secti ... s#/d2jly6k
