Sam gazed into the night sky filled with black clouds and torrential rain, ignoring his current assignment for a few moments to think while he clutched his glove covered left hand. Water filled every space in his camouflaged military uniform. A cold glue that washed away any remaining sand particles that desperately clung to his clothes after years in conflict. Harsh, high speed winds washed over his fit being yet Sam ignored the maelstrom’s wrath. Lost in thought while the storm unleashed its powerful fury over southern California. Flashes of electricity danced close to the officer yet even the bolts could not make the marine eye’s flinch. Rain, nor wind nor lightning could make Sam notice reality, but a sudden static caused his rigid face to cringe and his eyes to close.
The marine let go of his hand and picked up his radio. “This is Sergeant Wilson, over.”
“Listen up Wilson, have you arrived at the peer?” a familiar, annoying voice echoed from the radio.
Sam’s head fell back, his left hand clenched into a fist. The marine then glanced to his right, noticing the illuminated wooden peer connected to the road he currently stood upon. A large sign with a smiling clown surrounded by monsters greeted him to the attraction know as, Mason’s Monstrous Delights.
“Yes sir, I am…”
“Then move soldier!” the command officer yelled. “Get those blasted lights off and find whoever did it! This entire coastline is evacuated for a damn good reason and those eggheads from the east are on my ass over the danger of those lights so you need to…”
“Gee, wonder what that feels like,” Sam moaned as he clicked off the radio. After placing it back on his soaked belt, the officer grabbed a flashlight with his right hand and proceeded into the amusement themed pier.
Large waves crashed against the wooden beams of the pier that stood fifty feet off the water, shaking the structure as well as Sam who meticulously scanned every hut with his flashlight. Nothing was opened, no game huts pried apart or shattered from the maelstrom but every corner of the structure held a life-size clown, glowing form the lights inside as they smiled and pointed to different amenities. Sam turned to his left, catching another clown with his beam of light that notified him to try the Wild Wroundabout, Kaiju Koaster and the Serpent Shooters.
Another moan echoed from Sam who lowered his flashlight and grabbed his forehead. “Can’t just shut off the whole damn grid! Have to send a damn Sergeant to do grunt work!”
The sound of millions of rain pellets striking the pier replied to the marine, a noisy silence that angered him as his mind focused on his soaking wet attire. His breathing intensified, and as he lowered his head, he noticed the glowing plastic clown again. Its massive white smile causing Sam to grit his teeth. The soldier’s eyes narrowed, his fists clenched before he lunged.
A left hook smashed into the clown’s face, snapping it clear off of its body. The clown flashed violently as the bulbs inside overloaded before the remaining lights burst. A molten residue covered the inside of the transparent clown and gradually seeped out of the neck.
A calm sigh exited from Sam who took a few steps back before his eyes opened violently. His right hand grabbed his left, dropping the flashlight yet subduing a spike in pain from his left apendange.
“Dammit!” he screamed before Sam inhaled a deep breathe. The officer continued the specialized breathing and grabbed his flashlight with his right hand yet as he lifted it, the light reflected off two distant dots. The tiny specks retracted, retreating into the darkness yet Sam immediately burst into a sprint after them. Those were eyes, the eyes of whoever caused the mess he was in and that person was going to pay.
The feint outlines of an arm, a leg, the back of their head flashed in and out of view. Sam caught glimpses of the culprit as the marine ducked around the huts. Whoever he was running after wasn’t fast, the distance between the pair was closing quickly, but the perpetrator knew the pier well as he used his smaller stature to maneuver around the static objects. Then as Sam lunged toward him, the individual took a sharp right. In midair the soldier turned to follow and braced his leg for the hard turn merely for him to slip in the rain.
Sam hit the ground rolling, his body sliding until the back of his head struck something hard causing his body to go flat against the wooden deck. Instantly his vision blurred, the darkness of the storm turned into a pitch black void. Sam felt the rain hammer his body, the harsh wind blew across his stubble covered face and heard the creaking of the wooden deck as someone slowly approached him. Without hesitation, the marine pulled out his sidearm and aimed it in the general direction of the approaching figure.
“Don’t shoot!” a high pitch voice yelled before a thud echoed.
Sam shook his head, his vision slowly returning before he focused on the culprit of the hell he found himself in.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he noted as his vision fully recovered.
A kid, maybe in their teens, cowered in front of him. The small figure wore a light blue raincoat and their hands covered their head like in a fire drill. Slowly the kid looked up revealing light blue eyes that seemed to pierce the darkness and a youthful complexion of a young girl. Her rosy cheeks glowed in the darkness and the top of her short brown hair poked out of the raincoat’s hood. The kid then rose and yelled, “Who are you?”
Sam recovered to his feet, placed his sidearm away and looked around for anyone else.
“Not going to hurt you, I’m a soldier, but where are your friends kid?”
The young girl placed her hands on her side. “Hey, I asked first!”
Sam’s eyes narrowed. His head leaned toward hers, his eyes as rigid as stone. “Do I look like I really care?”
The girl’s confident demeanor vanished and she shook her head in fear negatively. “I’m…I’m the only one hear.”
“You did all this?” Sam asked with his eyebrows raised. “How the hel… how did you pull this off?”
“My uncle owns this place. I come here for the summer and he shows me lots of stuff.”
Sam rubbed his temples, yet his eyes remained locked on the small girl. “Does your uncle know you’re here?”
The girl swayed her head negatively again yet refused to make eye contact with the marine. “I snuck out this morning when the other soldiers were talking to him at the door. He’s probably worried… worried a lot but I had to see,” the girl noted with her eyes growing in size from excitement. “So I hid until the cars and Tanks left then I came here and waited but I couldn’t see so I turned on the…”
A massive wave struck the pier sending water over the rail and causing the girl to drop to the deck again. Water rushed over Sam’s black boots while he smirked at the girl’s reaction.
“Well kid, if you’re done wasting my time you can show me how to kill the lights.”
The young girl’s head remained down against the deck. “We can’t go! Not yet! How about…”
“This isn’t an option you little brat!” Sam yelled as the rain pelting his head began to subside. “Storm’s letting up so let’s move now before it picks up again!”
The girl lifted her head slightly then stopped as her eyes locked onto something behind Sam. The soldier immediately followed her gaze, only to discover rain. Water still pelted the huts in the distance yet it was thicker, like that of a stream. Sam glanced right, noticing the same phenomena then stuck out his hand. The officer ripped off his water logged right glove and held his hand out in front of him.
“Nothing…but that’s…”
A low hum echoed from the heavens without a flash of light as warning. A chill as cold as ice moved up the soldier’s spine from the sound causing the marine to force himself to look up. His eyes widened, his jaw hung and his body shook. Black scales blocked out the sky, almost blending into the night yet the feint glow of the pier barely reflected off the charred skin. Two large arms hung high above him and the lower jaw of the reptilian creature moved as it scanned the lights of the pier in curiosity.
Sam continued to look on in terror, unable to move until his radio buzzed again. The marine sprang into action, grabbing the girl with his right hand and the radio with his left.
“Contact! Contact! Contact! It’s here god damn it!” Sam yelled while he hoisted the girl over his shoulder and ran at full speed. The radio remained dead, no annoying voice to hound him causing the marine to yell, “End of the pier, repeat, Godzilla’s made landfall at the end of the…
Bright red lights flashed behind the marine and the creature moaned causing him to drop his radio. Sam instantly stopped and looked back, glancing around the deck as the crimson flashes illuminated the area.
“Shit, where the hell did that...”
A blue glow began to illuminate the sky, attracting Sam as well as the girl’s attention. The pair looked at the end of the pier, noticing the creature with its side now facing them. The leviathans large, pointed dorsal fins began to glow brighter and a hum like that of a power grid shrieked into the sky.
Sam immediately took off, passing the clown he decked and glancing at the girl. Gone were her wide eyes and rosy cheeks and replaced by a look of sheer terror.
“Close your eyes!” Sam ordered drawing the girl’s attention. “You hear me, close your eyes now!”
The girl grabbed ahold of the soldier and sunk her head as far into his shoulder as she could. Sam felt a trace of relief as she did before he grabbed his left hand and ran as hard as he could. His lungs burned, his muscles ached yet none of that mattered. Sam solely focused on the growing hum and the blue light. Both growing stronger every second until…
Atomic fire detonated across the pier, vaporizing the long wooden structure in a long continuous blast. The deck turned to ash, the amusement rides melted, the coaster contorted like putty and everything else jettisoned outward with tremendous force. Steam jettisoned into the air as salt water instantly turned to steam, and the lights of the pier were soon overtaken by a blue inferno. As the last lights melted away, the blaze ended with the piers complete destruction and the monster encompassed by the darkness of the night.
A feint yellow light peered through the darkness. The sound of rain pelting the landscape soon followed and then the feeling of pain fully awakened Sam. The marine instantly took a few full breathes and his body retracted, his hands grasping sand as he recovered to his feet. The officer immediately looked around and noticed the blue raincoat a few feet from him. Sam took one step and a sharp pain went through his body. Every broken or bruised thing cried out for him to stay still yet he staggered forward, reaching the girl and rolling her over.
Her eyes opened from the act, tears swelling in her sockets as she regained consciousness.
“You okay? What hurts?” Sam warmly inquired.
The girl shook her head, the tears now running down her face. “I am sorry,” she cried as she rested her head on his right arm. “I…I…”
Sam immediately looked away and glanced at his left hand, looking over the blackened glove.
“Your good kid. I’ve suffered worse, “Sam noted before he looked back at the girl. “So…don’t cry okay. I am going to carry you just to be safe so are you ready?”
The girl nodded, the tears in her eyes ending as Sam hoisted her over his shoulder. The soldier grimaced from the weight before looking where the pier had been for a brief second. The sand beneath now shined of black glass particles and fragments of pillars barely jutted out of the water as the sun peeked over the horizon at the storm’s end. With a deep breath, Sam took turned away and began his hike toward his base under the glow of the rising sun.

Core of the Storm (Greyshot151 Story + Discussion Thread)
"...A great love is a lot like a good memory. When it's there, and you know it's there, but it's just out of your reach, it can be all that you think about. You can focus on it, and try to force it, but the more you do, the more you seem to push it away. But if you're patient, and you hold still, then maybe... Just maybe... It will come to you."
