Chapter 1: Signs
January 2, 2012: The Japan Sea
A small fleet of three fishing boats moved through the choppy seas. They had caught a haul of mackerel, and were returning to port in Yokohama. Eiji, an old fisherman, was on deck with Shiro, a younger man. "Rough weather, huh?" said Shiro. "I've seen worse." Eiji replied. The old man felt uneasy. Having fished these waters for some 44 years, he had developed an intuitive sense of how things felt around here. Not ESP, just...a feeling. And something definitely felt wrong, sort of like that feeling one gets on a dark night, as though someone...or something...was watching. "What's wrong?" Shiro asked. "Not sure. Just have a funny feeling..." Suddenly, the deck was rocked, knocking both men off their feet. "A tidal wave!" Shiro shouted. "N-no...look!" stammered Eiji. Both men looked. A great serpent-like thing loomed above them. It disappeared beneath the waves, and before the fishermen could do anything, they, the ship, and the rest of the crew were pulled beneath the waves.

Flight 406 to Tokyo from LA was almost there. About time, thought Jeffrey Smith. He and his Japanese-American wife, Emiko, were going to Tokyo for a vacation, and to visit her family. It had been a long flight, and both of them were eager to touch down. "Look, Jeff!" said Emiko, who had the window seat. Jeff leaned over and looked out the window. At first he though he was looking at another plane, but the wings moved. "Too big to be a bird." he muttered. "But what...?" All of a sudden, the thing changed it's course and flew towards the plane. Jeff and Emiko barely had time to scream before the hurricane-force sonic boom the thing left in it's wake destroyed the plane.

"Hey, Tomoyuki!" Inoshiro said. "Hello" Tomoyuki said to his friend, looking up from the newpaper he was reading. "What are you reading about?" Inoshiro asked. "A plane blew up a couple days ago on it's way to Tokyo from Los Angeles. No one knows why." "Weird. Maybe the engine overloaded and blew up somehow." "Yeah, maybe," said Tomoyuki. "Or maybe it was monsters." "Ha! You would think it was monsters." And then the ground shook. "Aah! Earthquake!" Tomoyuki yelled. Then, the two friends saw a great mound of earth rushing at them like a wave. They stared, then started to run, but were engulfed and killed. Meanwhile, entire buildings were swallowed up into a chasm, while seismic activity monitoring stations around the country detected a series of tremors with a moving epicenter.
