The Horror under Blackmaw: Signups and Discussion Thread

If the title is any indication, this is a Cthulhu Mythos tale I plan to write.

Blackmaw Instituition is a prison island somewhere off Dunwich in the early 20th century. It's prisoners have commited little in common- some are merely thieves or vandals, others serial killers, rapists and the like, dumped into the island till they have finished their sentence, be it release or death. It's a tough job handling a large prison like Blackmaw, but the wardens manage, some even sadistically so.

Then came the whispers in the darkness, and shadows that traverse across grungy, eroded corridors, death and insanity. And what of the rumors that before, Blackmaw was an educational instituition- if a secretive and deeply discomfiting one- and what, if any remnants of its past threaten to return?

Um, yeah, about them sign-ups. Here's my character for an example.

Name: Robert Jermyn Dyer
Age: 43
Status: Prisoner (mention here if you are a criminal or a prison warden)
Crime: 2 charges of arson, which he commited to his brother's house after feeling he was given the short end of the stick when receiving inheritance. A prisoner at Blackmaw for 11 years.
Height: 6'1
Appearance/Description: A fairly tan man with weary wrinkles across his face, short, greyish crew-cut hair, grey-green eyes, and of muscular build. Speaks with some difficulty after he got his teeth punched out by fellow prisoners. His voice is deep and low, although it tends to turn raspy and fluctuates in tone if he panics.
Personality: Almost constantly annoyed and irritable, if normally quiet and introverted. Has a vindictive side, but is generally a pretty honorable and bold person, even if these courageous traits aren't quite up to the terrors he and the other prisoners will have to face.

Rules

1. Be realistic. While the Cthulhu Mythos are full of aliens and old angry gods the human characters were normal men and women. So no superheroes or anything if you get the idea
2. The character can be any 'inhabitant' of a prison- that is, either a prison warden of one of the prisoners themselves.
3. The character must be a human please, lol.
4. Do take into account the time period. So I doubt hackers or anything like that are going to be there.
5. Not neccesary by any means, but it would be best if the character bios were detailed.

So, yeah, signups start now. I will probably close them in about a week or so.

Name: Rodney "The Czar" Ramone
Status: Warden
Age: 28
Height: 6' 3"
Description: Rodney is a sadistic man, ruthless in his treatment of prisoners. He never trusts them to do anything, which stems from an incident when his father (a warden himself) was killed by an inmate in prison. He has short brown hair and a thin skeletal body. He isn't afraid of beating an inmate if they do something wrong, but he never wanders around alone, fearing that he'll follow in his father's footprints. His nickname "The Czar" is a combination of two things: his father's name, which was Cesar, and his tyrannical control over the inmates. Fear him greatly.

Name: Trisha Gulo Sephyre
Age: 27
Status: Prison Warden
Height: 6ft 3
Appearance: a tall, gentle looking woman with brownish-green eyes, short black hair that reaches to the shoulders, and a standard suit she wears, even down to the tie, an appearance that contrasts sharply with most of the other wardens at Blackmaw. And yet, there is the blood-stained meat cleaver she holds behind her back most of the time, especially when she is patrolling between the prison cells...
Personality: It is a rare thing for a women, especially one so young, to be a prison warden at this time and age, and Trisha is more of an experiement than anything. Having heard of Blackmaw Insitution, she applied to be a warden there, and at first, it seemed as if it was merely keep those prisoners there subdued with her "Sex appeal", and indeed, at first glance, it would appear as though she wouldn't stand a ghost of a chance amongst such criminals. And yet, when she was hired for kicks and giggles, it turned out that there was more to Trisha than that. While normally a sweet lady who loves to chat and eat, when she's doing her job, she turns into a sadistic nightmare, torturing and even mutilating those criminals who she feels are annoyances or refuse to follow what she asks of them. At one time, she even had a criminal killed by hanging them over a growing bamboo shoot in her office, and having the abmboo grow up through his underside and out his brain. Said murderer's corpse is still there. Her sadistic personality and her love to torture have given her a fearsome name in Blackmaw. "Do as Trisha says, or you'll become her doll to eviscarate," they say. The ways she come sup to torture and scar those prisoners under her jurisdiction are both creative and horrifying. She is also a fan of reading murder mysteries, especially Agatha Christie's works...

Name: Aubry "Cards" Grigori
Age: 41
Status: Prisoner
Crimes: Massive bank and tax fraud, forgery, five charges of manslaughter, and two unproven accusations of first degree murder
Height: 5'11"

Appearance:
Cards Grigori is a thin, gaunt man with a triangular red-and-grey beard, hard emerald eyes, and a lean, hungry face. Dark blue rings of flesh circle his eyes, making their green sheen even more savage. He always sits and moves with a straight spine, his head held proud, as if he still commended respect as the criminal overlord he once was, and has a habit of cradling his left hand in his right sleeve. There are a series of scarred lines running down the back of this hand, the result of a 'lesson' he received as a younger, more naïve man from a once infamous crime boss. On the palm as his right hand, there is a large tattoo of a oozing blood drop, representing the death of that crime lord, a murder that was never fully linked to him. His small, pointed nose is also crooked from a fight with another inmate.

Description:
The son of a Russian gangster and a Mexican whore, Cards Grigori was one of the most famed and feared criminals in the nation before his arrest. Mentored by his mother in surviving on the street and his father in the way of the criminal, he was a natural thief and liar from birth. He began his criminal career as a common thug, but swiftly rose through the ranks due to his ambitious schemes and cunning. In particular, he has praise for a huge casino heist which he masterminded, earning him his nickname. Soon a crime lord on his own right, Grigori's plots only swelled, all of the men under his command at work stealing, threatening, and- if need be- killing other criminals or citizens. Although Cards covered his tracks well, a break in a case from his early days openned up several others, and before the crime boss could flee or erase the evidence, he was caught, tried, and convicted. He is in prison for life.

While not necessarily a cruel or sadistic man, Cards Grigori is very prideful and easy to offend. He was once openly boastful and smug, but a few scuffles with far larger, more brutish prisoners soon convinced him to keep more reserved. Cards is intelligent and watchful, as well as a skilled deceiver- three traits that make him one of the most talented gamblers around. Even in prison, he has amassed a sort of fortune, owning many cigarettes and various other scraps that are considered valuable hidden around his cell. The wardens are fully aware of this, because while Cards is resourceful enough to keep them safely tucked away in unexpected places, he enjoys teasing his guards with the ocassional comment or scrap left purposely behind. Grigori is universally one of the most disliked inmates, although he not completely unpleasant to his fellow prisoners. He is conversational and has many interesting stories, even if they are often forced upon unwilling ears.

Grigori has never been very good at harming others with his hands, but is fairly handy with a gun or one of the many makeshift bladed weapons he has been found to horde. He is a above average marksman and can hide stabbing tools on his person quite efficiently.

And wow... I also just noticed the similarities between KC and my characters. Similar ages, same height, both sadists... I swear, my post was in the works and he posted while I was making my character. This is a very creepy coincidence.

I missed out on my chance for the Invasion and Youkai High sign ups. I am not going to miss this one too. So, here it goes.

Name: Arthur Skardus
Age: 51
Status: Prisoner
Crime: 2 proven murders
Height: 6' 0"

Appearance: British 'gentleman' with handlebar mustache, pale skin, thin face, and green eyes. However, age and imprisonment have taken their toll on his appearance and mood. With dark circles under his eyes, baggy skin, and a constant offended expression, he looks more dead than alive. Once however, he was a handsome young gentleman. But that's another story...that I will tell you right now.

Personality/History: Vile little man. Raised in an incredibly rich British family, he was the kind of child who tormented other children and killed small animals. When he grew up, he instantly jumped at the chance to go kill more animals and add fame and glory to his incredible wealth. So he went to Africa to hunt big game with two other filthily rich men. There, Arthur ended up contracting a deadly fever which left many of its sufferers dead. However, Skardus was one of the one in ten who manage to survive the fever which causes hallucinations, profuse sweating, and vomiting. Even though he survived the disease, it seemed to make him weaker and prone to illness for the rest of his life. Also, it brought out his inner crazy. Eventually, in a fit of anger, he used a pistol to kill one of his two fellow hunters. The other, who witnessed the brutal slaying, was sworn never to tell anyone by Skardus. After disposing of the body, the two eventually left Africa with their trophies.

When they returned to Britian, the two never spoke about the crime and ended up forming a business partnership in America, where they were neighbors in the same uppity neighborhood, living relatively peaceful lives although Skardus was slowly becoming more paranoid and psychotic. However, within a few years, the witness couldn't bear keeping his secret any longer. It was eating him up and he feared that Skardus would kill again. So, one night he left his house for the police station, but the paranoid Arthur followed him out, pistol in hand. After stalking him for a few minutes, Arthur shot his business partner in the back where he thought no one was watching or listening. However, two pedestrians weren't seen by Skardus in the darkness. Witnessing the attack and who carried it out, they went to the police, whom upon a positive identification from the witnesses, arrested the murderer the next day. Eventually, after interrogation, Skardus admitted his reasoning for killing his friend. And with that, he was charged with two murders, put on trial, and condemned to Blackmaw.

His personality? He acts superior to anyone different from him. He considers women, non whites, non Christians, poor or anyone different from him inferior. He constantly refers to fellow prisoners and the wardens as scum which earns him punishment and hate. But, he really is out of his league at this place both psychologically and physically. Also, although he once could act respectably, years of imprisonment have taken their toll on the murderer. Now he waits, his life ruined by his own hand and his mind becoming increasingly unstable.

Maybe our warden characters will go and make some warden babies. Hm? Have a little warden family, and the kids could play with the inmates...that sounds like a simply splendid time.

Name: Leo Durran
Age: 16
Status: Prisoner
Crime: Murder and cannibalism.
Height: 5'6"
Appearance: Pale skin with light blonde hair, dark blue eyes, and numerous cuts across his body. His nails are pointed, almost claw-like from his constant gnawing on them, and his teeth have sharpened into small points.
Description: Suffering from a serious mental condition that he was born with, Leo is unpredictable. One moment he may be rather tame, the next moment he could go into a fit of blind rage. Many times he forgets that he's a human, and will often growl and snarl like a caged leopard at anyone he doesn't know or like. This is exactly how he got here: At the age of 10, he had been seized by one of his rage fits and ended killing and feeding on his parents. It was later reported that he fought and killed a cougar, which explains the cuts on his body. He wasn't found until two years later, when he attacked and killed several children at a public school. Since then, he had been locked up for not just the protection of others, but for his own life.

Holy crap, that's a hell lot of complete monsters and psychopaths we have here. It's almost like Arkham Asylum before Batman came around. Should pose an interesting challenge as a fair bit of the story will be written in first-person.

Name: Wilbur Zacharias Poe (Father Poe)
Age: 67
Height: 5'7
Status: Prison 'Warden' (actually the prison's resident pastor)
Appearance: A friendly looking old man, with a pleasant smile decorating his face. He has greying hair, a monocle over his left eye and pearly white teeth. He is almost always in pastor robes. He is definitely the least threatening looking person in Blackmaw.
Personality: With so many prisoners in the place, a pastor was assigned to Blackmaw to give those commiting crimes that face the death penalty to find peace within themselves. Wilbur Poe has been an inhabitant of Blackmaw for 15 years, replacing Father Gordon Whateley who eventually got torn apart by the prisoners. While most of the time a nice, friendly guy, years at Blackmaw have changed the old father and unleashed a more predatory, ruthless side in him. If provoked/in a bad mood, he may psychologically assault his prisoners with a combination of warped bible verses and a degree in psychology he got before he turned to the Christian ministry (which on second thoughts was scarcely the best plac for him). Despite his own dickery, Poe still considers himself 'higher' than the other wardens for at least not have bamboo plants shoved up the prisoners' behinds. However, being a coward, he makes no attempt to stop his fellow monsters from doing their sadistic duties. Overall, he's a fair hypocrite. It is rumored that Father Poe is the only one in the prison who knows some (but not all) the secrets behind Blackmaw instituition.

Name: Pedro ''Loner'' Cardoso
Age: 30
Height: 5'8
Status: Prisoner
Crimes: Murder, kidnap, rubbery
Appearance: Toned skin, slim figure with small muscles, small brown hair, shaved face, brown eyes.
Story: Born in Portugal Pedro had a normal life with a loving family, he was never one to socialise with other people alway liked to wait for people to come to him. when he was 20 after losing all of his money in gambling Pedro went into the world of crime building a big reputation and wealth working as an ''handyman'' for a criminal organisation. During one of his jobs the police was called in, Pedro like always kept calm and tried to get away but the cops were able to block his escape locking him inside an abandon building. Pedro was able to kill a lot of cops but in the end he was shoot in the shoulder and taken into police custody.

Personality:Pedro normaly keeps to himself only talking when needed, but when he talks he reveals himself to be a smart person, that only says whats needed till he can trust a person fully, spending as much alone time as he does he can normally analise a situation and what my happen by locking at people.

Name: Xander "X" Draven
Age: 34
Status: Prisoner
Crimes: 6 counts of first degree murder
Height: 6'5"
Appearance: Xander is really tall and rather thin. His skin is extremely pale; if one didn't know any better, they might think he's an albino. He has dark brown eyes and long, black hair. He looks like a goth, really. He has a few scars on his face and a several on his body, from his childhood and from the guards torturing him.

Description: Not much is known about where Xander came from. He was left at the steps of an orphanage with nothing but "Xander Draven" written on a small piece of paper. His caretakers were abnormally cruel, treating the orphans like slaves. Xander was one of the only orphans to lash out at his caretakers, getting increasingly more violent towards them. After one such incident had a caretaker hospitalized, he was kicked out. He was 16.

Where he went is a mystery. All that's know is that several years later, at age 20, he returned to the orphanage, with a rifle. He shot six of his former caretakers. He was arrested and brought to Blackmaw, where he's remained for over a decade.

He refuses to talk about his past. If you ask him anything about his childhood or the shooting, he'll simply ignore you.

Personality: Xander is socially awkward, rarely talking to people. He has few friends; most of the inmates just ignore him. Most of the guards don't like him, because he often ignores orders, which gets him tortured. Interestingly, he doesn't scream when being abused, no matter what you do to him. Some of the guards have made a game out of it, trying to make him scream.

He sees others as either equal or inferior to him. You'll never see him adress his fellow inmates or the guards as "sir" or anything; he usually addresses people by their first names (it gets on the wardens' nerves). That is assuming he responds to you to begin with; he rarely talks to people, even when directly addressed. He speaks with a very laid back tone, as if he didn't have a care in the world. He basically never raises his voice or yells. Maybe once in a blue moon...

Now isn't this a form I never expected to see it written as, a letter? It's unconventional and unheard of here at TK, but it does open up an angle of suspension. And wow, Blackmaw sounds worse than I envisioned...

and of course, our dear lady Trisha Sephyre is among the most feared wardens there... It makes me feel happy to know that she is so feared in an asylum filled with rapists, murderers, and the worst of the worst. You did an amazing job of capturing just how vile she truly is... All he rtorture methods, her mannerisms, the fact our dear protagonist is afraid of her himself, it all comes together!
