The first DS came out in late 2004, it's still recent. Most people don't view the original GBA, the PS2, Gamecube and original Xbox as classic systems since they came out in the early 2000's and they are not that old. Maybe in 2019 they can be viewed as classic systems.

I grew up with my brother owning a NES and then a SNES, but the only games I really cared about were Doom and Doom II. And then my brother rented a PSX, along with Nightmare Creatures and Resident Evil. That's when I really started taking interest in games.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm not big on the N64, but I admit it was totally my own fault. All my friends were quick to jump on the PS and Saturn bandwagons (the 1st being great, the other not so much), so I was thrilled when working at a retail store at the time, I got the first crack at a N64.

My first game was Shadows of the Empire- a great game to be sure, I still love it, but after that, this system didn't offer me any other good titles until the 1st Zelda game (I'm soprry Majoras mask sucks IMHO). I think I got a total of 5 games for this system despite having it when it first came out. As a result I skipped the GC altogether fearing it would have the same problems. I did get a Wii however, so now I can enjoy the GC games I missed dirt cheap. Now I almost never buy anythign new. There is something to be said for waiting for technology to get old since it is much more affordable :)

The Playstation. I mean c'mon it had an epic start up screen and also it had a great game roster with classics like: Resident Evil 1-Nemesis, the Crash Bandicoot games that were released on there, Spyro The Dragon & other great games. While the N64 had great games no question but to me, the PS1 had the better game library

Game stores like Gamestop and EB Games no longer accept GBA games or Gamecube games because they are "officially" labeled as classic systems.

The Sega Saturn and PlayStation. The games on those two consoles are very memorable to me since I grew up with them.

NES has that magic. 2d, bare bones graphics with an emphasis on gameplay and difficulty. Heck, some of the sprites in some of the games actually hold their own against their sixteen bit versions on the Sega Genesis and Super NES, like in the game Batman Return of The Joker.
And then you have the catchy music and sound effects where developers had to get creative, like digitized voices or the sound of ricocheting bullets in (Tinny metallic drive-through order voice )"The Adventures of Bayou Billy".
I remember liking the sound effect used when going down a warp zone in the NES Super Mario Bros. over the shrill, kazoo- like noise you hear when doing it in Super Mario World on the SNES.

The Genesis and SNES were also quite good at turning out Games with interesting sound and music, the SNES in particular with its Sony sound chip.

I don't think just because Gamestop said that makes them classic systems. Most gamers I know don't view Gamecube, Xbox, and the PS2 are retro systems.

Classic and Retro are two completely different words with different meanings. They're not interchangeable.

Those three outdated consoles for instance are not 'retro', as that would imply there's a demand for them once again. There isn't.

Those three outdated consoles however do fall withing the second definition of the word 'classic': "serving as a standard, model, or guide". And if I recall, they did set standards for console gaming.

That said, Sega Dreamcast.

Add PS2 games now too... Gamestop is strictly PS3/360/Wii, DS and 3DS now.

The classic Playstation 1 , so many great classic games - the platformers like Crash , the outstanding collection of JRPGs - chrono trigger , lunar 1 & 2 , FF7 , breath of fire 3 , etc . the strategic RPG like Brigadine , FF tactics , Ogre tactics etc , the fairly unique like the techmo deception series (i loved my iron ball) , the FMV games ported from PC - Wing commander III & IV , Psychic detective , Foxhunt , x-files etc (big screen tv as it should be for FMV games !). Still go back to play on that system from time to time.

Hellspawn, you really can't quantify human emotions like nostalgia. It's different for everyone, and since you're in your 20s, what's nostalgic for you and what's nostalgic for me, and, hell, what's nostalgic for one of the younger members, are all completely independent of each other. I have nostalgia for Pokémon Ruby, because that's what I started out with.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I'd have to say the NES, though I've not played very much on it.

Though I think the most "retro" system I had was a Gameboy Pocket and a Gameboy Color. They still work, which seem to surprise a lot of people (probably because they either lost theirs or broke them).
I would include SNES and Sega Genesis with the Gameboy Pocket (though I never own any of the former two).
I'd add in Gamecube (since I own one, too) but that's 2000's, so it wouldn't count. I wonder...how about old-school PC games or really PCs?

Sega: Genesis was the shit. Anyone who dares to imply otherwise is in denial.

Yeah, but seriously I'll go with PS1. Genesis was fun for the time, but didn't hold up at all the last time I tried it, in '05-ish. PS1 probably still would, though I replaced Sony consoles with an XBOX in '03. Not a choice I regret at all, but I miss some of those old Playstation games. Spyro and Cool Boarders 2, especially. I still have the disks; I'd love to play them again someday.

PS1. Why? First ever console I had. My and my dad used to play with it all the time...Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men Mutant Academy, Atari Collection...good stuff. I also remember the old Spider-Man game, now that was fun.

Definitely SNES though. I had many good memories with that system.
