Whats Your Favorite Old School Console?

Postby Hellspawn28 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 6:10 pm

For you nostalgic gamers which console from the 70's up to the late 90's is your favorite. Keep it pre-2000 since PS2, Xbox and Gamecube came out in the early 2000's, they are not view as nostalgic systems. I don't know what would qualify as my favorite, I love both the Sega Genesis, the N64 and the PS1/PSX. All three systems have a special place in my heart and I always spend so much hours playing on my PS1 back in 1998. I do think the PS1 had the best section of games though and could be why it sold more then the N64 and the Sega Saturn.

SNES.

I have more SNES ROMs then anything else. Seems EVERYTHING had an SNES game at the time. Genesis games just seemed to be retooled dumbed down SNES games. PS1 was great but not all games grabbed me. Especially alot of that FPS shit like Parasite Eve and Syphon Filter. N64 also good, but the games library is forgettable.

Classic Nintendo. Have so many good memories of playing games like Godzilla: Monster of Monsters and Thundercade with my Dad. Oh, and Super Mario 3, which was all kinds of wonderful.

NES. I got mine on Christmas 1987 and it's still going strong today.

SNES, Atari 2600 and Intellivision get honorable mentions

1. SNES-So Many great games! Also the first console I was able to play Japanese games on (from Super Famicom) with a simple cartidge extension. My original from February 1992 still works.

2. Original NES I got mine in Feb 1987 and yes it still works also!

I have many collections on PS2 of various Atari & Arcade classics as well as several NES/SNES downloads from Wii Virtual Console. The Irony is that I think my PS2 is dying, but the old consoles still work!

I know its probably next to impossible, but I would pay a decent price right now for a PS3 if it could be guaranteed to be fully backward compatible with all PS & PS2 games from US and Japan (like my curent PS2).

The Nintendo 64. It's not just my favorite old-school console, it's the greatest console of all time. Sorry everyone, but the truth is the truth.

Yeah very compelling argument bro.
Apparently SWTOR said that I can invite 25 people for a 7 day trial of the game. PM me if interested.

I guess that the N64 didn't had as much 3rd party support due to the limited amount of space on the cartridge. The PS1/PSX had much more support since the disc was not as limited. I know a lot of people that told me that the N64 was a skreeonk you to the fighting and RPG fans. The N64 did kick ass but the PS1/PSX was just as good if not better in my opinion.

SNES by far, most of the well known titles for that system are still good games. DKC2 anyone?

honorable mention to the NES tho

It's 2012, and I'm still not 100% sure how to hold the controller. You are entitled to your opinion, not fact. That controller ruined the potential for so much more.

Also the part where the N64 isn't really "old school."

SNES was a masterpiece.

How if the system is 15 and half years old? I always thought anything from the 90's can be viewed as nostalgic and retro? I never had a NES and SNES growing up but I did play them at other people's houses.

Because the N64 marked the monumental industry shift into 3D gaming (building on the Playstation). It's stayed that way since (aka it's the new school).

Except the controller is wonky as hell. It looks like it's been originally designed for a sub-race of humans who possess 3 arms.

How far back is "old school"?

Because technically, Gameboy Advance is a "classic" system now.

so does that count as "old school"?

What about the FIRST DS?

The first DS came out in late 2004, it's still recent. Most people don't view the original GBA, the PS2, Gamecube and original Xbox as classic systems since they came out in the early 2000's and they are not that old. Maybe in 2019 they can be viewed as classic systems.

I grew up with my brother owning a NES and then a SNES, but the only games I really cared about were Doom and Doom II. And then my brother rented a PSX, along with Nightmare Creatures and Resident Evil. That's when I really started taking interest in games.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm not big on the N64, but I admit it was totally my own fault. All my friends were quick to jump on the PS and Saturn bandwagons (the 1st being great, the other not so much), so I was thrilled when working at a retail store at the time, I got the first crack at a N64.

My first game was Shadows of the Empire- a great game to be sure, I still love it, but after that, this system didn't offer me any other good titles until the 1st Zelda game (I'm soprry Majoras mask sucks IMHO). I think I got a total of 5 games for this system despite having it when it first came out. As a result I skipped the GC altogether fearing it would have the same problems. I did get a Wii however, so now I can enjoy the GC games I missed dirt cheap. Now I almost never buy anythign new. There is something to be said for waiting for technology to get old since it is much more affordable :)

The Playstation. I mean c'mon it had an epic start up screen and also it had a great game roster with classics like: Resident Evil 1-Nemesis, the Crash Bandicoot games that were released on there, Spyro The Dragon & other great games. While the N64 had great games no question but to me, the PS1 had the better game library

Game stores like Gamestop and EB Games no longer accept GBA games or Gamecube games because they are "officially" labeled as classic systems.
