Well Nintendo said that they didnt want to make the same mistake again (3DS price at launch) but i agree its going to
cost a little bit more that we expect but i hope it doesnt happen like with the 3DS.

I posted this at another forum I go to:

You know I'm really starting to think that the rumor of the Wii U being $600 will be true because lets look at some facts.

It'll be HD yeah most of the components are cheap now so that's not going to be a huge price factor considering both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are resonably priced. So depending on storage method and other components (processor, RAM, GPU, etc. etc.) that will add a cost of between $250-$350.

The main reason that's going to drive the cost up is the system's controller which is basically a tablet and those aren't cheap, the cheapest tablet on the market right now is $250 and also recently at CES a gaming tablet was annouced and the creators said it'd be no more than $1000. So by making the system's controller be a tablet Nintendo is adding another $250-$1000 cost to the system bring the grand total between $500 on the low end to $1350 on the high end. Obvisouly they can't get away with selling the system for $1350 so regardless they'll have to take some what of a hit on the console the question is how big of a hit is Nintendo willing to take?

Sadly if Nintendo prices this thing to high like at $600 the system won't sell and they can't price it to low or they'll take a huge loss on every system sold. Sure they could recoup that loss with killer software line up in the launch window but lets face the good shit doesn't usually show up until 6 months to a year after a system launches.

So in other words Nintendo is in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. Well at least they had the number one spot last generation.

As for the 3DS mistake it wasn't so much about the price of the handheld as the fact that there where hardly any games worth getting during launch, the system launched at the very end of March and really didn't get a must have title until June when OoT 3D launched it then stayed slow until the fall when more software titles started trickling in. Had the system launched with more 1st party titles and OoT 3D I'm sure it would have sold a lot better during its first few months.

EB Australia admits that their $600 price tag is pure speculation: http://shigeruslist.com/2012/01/24/wii- ... eculation/

That said, it's pretty likely that Wii U will NOT be a budget system like the Wii was. As much as I love that tablet controller, you know it's going to be expensive, and the processing power needed to back it up will add to the cost of the console too. I really hope Wii U doesn't have a rough launch like the 3DS did, but price, software line-up and really selling the idea that the tablet controller is a fresh new take on gaming will all decide that. Hopefully Nintendo puts on a big show at E3 and really reveals this thing.

When comparing Consoles to PCs everything is outdated with in the first six months of launch. :P

Consoles are ALWAYS outdated before they even come out. They can't use top of the line graphic cards and such because the prices on consoles would be insane. PC's get away with costing that much because they are so versatile and can multitask far, far better than any console ever will. Consoles make up for the lack of graphical power with very good hardware optimization by the game designers.

I hope some Wii U games will allow you to use Wii remote then a tablet. I would imagine the 4th Smash Bros game will likely do that since Brawl allow you to use any type of controler.

Yeah, Wii U supports remotes and the balance board in addition to the tablet controller.

Whoa, surprised to see nobody talking about the Nintendo Network announcement. It sounds like Nintendo is serious about stepping up and providing the Wii U with some of the cool online features the 360 and PS3 have: http://shigeruslist.com/2012/01/28/dont ... o-network/

I just don't see the Wii U costing that much... A bit too insane if you ask me. Consoles, when first released, are ALWAYS sold at a loss, and that... Just seems outrageous.

And, yes, I AM happy about the Nintendo Network. Monster Hunter fans have a chance to take their games on the go AND hunt with bros from across the country.

Yes I know, $50 doesn't seem like much. But imagine if you had to buy a couple million of them. And that is just for the first shipment. That increased $50 suddenly became a much bigger investment. And the other part is the developers need time to work with the hardware of the system. Console games are optimized for the systems they run on after all. The Wii U most likely came to the end of the development of it's hardware around the time it was announced or even before.

But it is kinda silly to think any console will actually be up-to-date with PC's. Everyone went crazy over the 360 when it was released because it was "so powerful". My desktop is from nearly 8 years ago and was only mid-range then and blows a 360 out of the water in terms of graphical power.

Not true. The only systems to do that were the last two generations of the Xbox and Playstation. Unless you are incredibly young, those are not the only consoles ever made.

There is only a limited amount of controller designs that are actually comfortable to use. Besides, the ABXY buttons and right analog stick are in different places.

In case no one has noticed, game pad design hasn't changed since ever. Every single one has the same basic setup.

I like the Pro controller, but hate the regular WiiU controller.
Apparently SWTOR said that I can invite 25 people for a 7 day trial of the game. PM me if interested.

I'm really digging the Wii U game pad. Considering the likes of Rayman Legends, this should be interesting.

More than likely a day one buy for me, depending...

Nah, day one buy. Just show me Pikmin 3.
