...But that's not what Zelda is. It has never been like that. Such openness would also mean you'd have to make every single dungeon about the same skill level. You wouldn't be able to put tough enemies in them, because you'd be able to visit any of them. And, for the sake of argument, you say "well they can put stronger enemies in the harder ones, just give you access to them right away." That still reinforces more linear gameplay, since you would be unable to complete the harder dungeons without first completing the easier dungeons. Also keep in mind that the progression of Zelda games is largely plot based. In OoT, you can't get to the Lakebed Temple without the Zora armor, which you need to get from King Zora, which you need to complete the ice cave for, etc etc. Making an open Zelda game like Oblivion makes it no longer Zelda. It makes it, well, Oblivion. Which Zelda is not.

In the first Zelda you could get to any dungeon from the start I believe

Berserker wrote:I wish the next Zelda game would be more open-world. Vast wilderness to explore with secrets under trees and rocks (whatever happened to "It's a secret to everyone?" Who says all the moblins and lizalfos have to be bad guys?) More mystery, less hand-holding. Less railroading. If I want to explore the second dungeon before I find the first, I should be able to.

I fear today's demand for scripted encounters and cut scenes makes this type of Zelda game impossible, but still, I would be more than happy with a cinematic showing us Ganon brooding in Death Mountain, telling us to go find 8 pieces of the broken Triforce and then defeat him. After that, it's our game.

Everytime I start a new game of Elder Scrolls Oblivion, I get out into the wilderness and think, if this game was Zelda, it would be my favorite game in the world. (Then, with a sigh, I slog out into a beautiful landscape marred by terrible combat mechanics and repetitive dungeon crawling.)

Well I take it you liked Majora's mask a lot.
In Ocarina you can Complete Shadow temple before or after Spirit Temple.

Oh god don't remind me.

Majora's Mask is my favorite and really it gets hate it doesn't deserve. I can understand why some people might not like it but it's still pretty cool. I thought an interesting thing was not only are there a lot of sidequests but Link was looking for Novi from OOT and instead got sidetracked trying to stop the moon from falling on the world so in a since the whole game is a sidequest. I also like how it feels like a living breathing world as people will be in different places doing different things depending what day it is and what time it is.

MM also brings us something different cause in most Zelda games the big bad at the end is often Gannon(dorf) who wants to become a god and take over everything. In OOT he manages to take over at least one kingdom (two if you count his all female thief tribe who I forgot what they were called) and becomes somewhat godlike. MM rises the bar by not only giving someone else a chance to be the big bad but also someone with a different M.O. and leave his reasons up in the air. Gannondorf managed to take over Hyrule for 7 years and came clost to taking over the rest of the world but Majora was more meanicing to me cause instead of taking over he wanted to destroy everything and it only takes 3 days for him to do it if you fail. Also kinda cool was how they never tell us why he wants to destroy the world, personally I like to think it's just plain batshit crazy.

I first played this game when I was I think like 8 or 9 and I also liked that one of the themes was masks cause Halloween was my favorite holiday when I was younger and I loved how at times it felt like you were losing yourself when you wore a mask like you were becoming someone else and in a some cases you really did become someone else. The Fierce Deity mask was sort of a twisted version of what Link would look like if he lost it one day or became evil and if you use it then in a sense it was evil vs insane evil. Time was also a cool theme in this game, true OOT dealt with time but that focused more on an uncertain future where as MM dealt with being trapped in the past like almost making the player feel like they can't let go of their own past in a sense, not sure if I'm wording it right.

The game also feels like a strange combo of Halloween and New Years Eve because of the masks and the clock tower that only opens once a year for a certain holiday.

I'm actually going to do a walktrhough of it for Halloween, I felt that it seems prefect for it because of all the masks. Plus it's the first Zelda game I ever played.

I remember the days I only had a Gameboy with Links Awakening and a sega, I would see ads for MM, I wanted it, bad. Then I got a Gamecube, then about a year later the gamecube came out with a special disc with this game on it! Luckwas on my side, my friend bought a Gamecube and got it, he broke it, the store gave him a brand new one, with a second disc! He gave it to me for free :)

Hey Hedorah, is it just me or does the first time you play MM almost feel like it's a dream scene?

Like the very start when you walk into the tower and meet the mask salesman it almost seems like Link is dreaming.

I'll preorder it once there's a firm release date. I have a feeling it's going to get pushed back till November 2011 for some reason.

It seems like they make a new major Zelda game from 3-6 years. Nov 2011 seems like a right time for the game.

TP got push back from Fall 2005 to Fall 2006. I love TP but I don't think any Zelda game will over top OOT or Link to the Past.
