Well, the gameplay, how things will go down and how they tie into the books. First thing I want to talk about is Tartarus's story being open ended, will any of the games address this?

When? It will be interesting to come across this person that I read about in-game. What is the story/primary objective of Halo: Combat Evolved?

^ So I take it you don't mind minor spoilers? I wasn't sure how much to say about Tartarus.

^ Okay. Tartarus plays a prominent role in Halo 2. There's no mention of his past, though; Contact Harvest wasn't written until a few years later. As for Combat Evolved's story: it picks up right where The Fall of Reach left off, with the Pillar of Autumn approaching the gas giant Threshold, and a mysterious ring-shaped object orbiting above it. Unfortunately, the Covenant's Fleet of Particular Justice had anticipated where the Autumn would exit Slipspace, and had gotten there first. The Autumn comes out on the wrong end of the ensuing battle, and Keyes is forced to crash-land on the ring after as many crew as possible, including the Chief and Cortana, bail out in the lifeboats.

The Chief and Cortana head the survivors' effort to regroup and stay alive, but that quickly becomes a secondary concern once Keyes discovers that the Covenant knew of the ring's existence already, referred to it as 'Halo', and believed it to be a weapon of some sort. So he then puts full priority on unlocking Halo's secrets before the Covenant do. And that's about as far as I can go without spoiling the big stuff. You're better off finding out in the game. :huge:

All that said, you should know that the first game's story is pretty simple compared to those that follow; it's pretty much just establishing the basic ideas of the franchise. There aren't many characters, and we don't see things from the Covenant perspective at all. There's no mention of Linda or the other Spartan-IIs, either. Bungie never seemed to have much interest in connecting the 'expanded universe' to the games. 343 is doing a better job of that now, though. None of this stops the game from being a lot of fun, of course.

One of the things the Covenant perspective did for me was make me want to avenge Dadab. Can't wait to delve into the story that I read into, of course. How much Covenant forces will I come across and have to destroy? Will there be any mention of the Prophets? Anything clunky about Reach and Combat Evolved?

It's been a while since I've played through all of Combat Evolved, so my memories of exactly what all you run into in the later levels are a bit hazy. There are a lot of 'em, though. Several hundred, at least. And no, the Prophets don't appear until H2. Same with the Jiralhanae and Yanme'e. You'll only be fighting Sangheili, Unggoy, Kig-Yar, and Lekgolo. Huragok don't appear until Halo 3: ODST.

Clunky stuff... well, CE is showing its age, these days. That can't really be considered a fault, though, and it was great for its time. I can't think of any serious problems with it. Reach is generally great, gameplay-wise. The story deviates a lot from the book, though, and is rather confusing. I still can't figure out exactly how certain events happen, assuming Reach's defenses are anything like what was described in the book. It's still fun, though.

About that last one, it is probably Mr. Retcon knocking on our door. ;)
Combat Evolved is one of my more anticipated play throughs of any game and I honestly wish I could record it for my YouTube channel. I am definitely into this world, Master Chief and the Covenant are compelling aspects. I heard somewhere Combat Evolved invented the switching between two weapons thing, is this true?

I don't know. I didn't play many shooters before Halo.

Oh, I should also mention that Reach doesn't show anything from the Covenant perspective, either. Which was a good move, IMO. There wasn't any need for them to have a complex story in that game.

Of course, it is about a beautiful planet and military power getting destroyed while you fight on it, correct?

Hmm... I don't think most of it is anything too special. It must not be, if I can't remember much of it off the top of my head. Most of what we see is pretty barren, IIRC. Lots of rocks and ice. It's all very detailed and stuff, but I don't remember the landscapes having as much visual 'oomph' as some of the stuff in the other games.

There's not a whole lot I can say that doesn't spoil major events of the first game. It begins with the Prophet of Regret stumbling across Earth, though. And the Covenant perspective is much more prominently featured here than any of the other games. The answer to the last question you'll need to find out for yourself.

I wonder if I should spoil it or not but will there be a battle on earth? If you feel like it isn't a good idea you can tell me so and we can move on to a different subject.

Yes, there is a battle on Earth. That was the main focus of the game's advertising, and is stated on the case and everything, so that much isn't a spoiler.

Yeah, that makes it a much more interesting story than it might otherwise be. Neither side is entirely good or evil, and both have their heroes and villains to root for or against.
