Yet every film should be Back to the Future.

I've seen two films in theaters this year

Avengers and Chronicle, both of which I loved

I do plan on hopefully seeing Prometheus, Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises in theaters though

I normally grade the movies I see each year on a letter scale. I'll just keep it that way for now I guess.

Excellent:
Cabin in the Woods: A
Avengers: A

Very Good:
Hunger Games: B+
Prometheus: B+

Mediocre:
Men in Black III: C+
John Carter: C+

Poor:
Chronicle: -C

A bump to revisit everyone's progress on 2012 films. I've hit the 20 mark so I can pick five top films without taking a significant portion of the total films I saw (lol) along with a quick blurb on why I chose them.

The Avengers
Is The Avengers some soon-to-be-a-classic piece of artistic cinema? No, but it knows what its goal is and does it well in every conceivable way. It's really stolen the show in superhero movies for entertainment. It's loud and obnoxious, but it a very good way. The humor is well placed and plentiful, which added another interesting element that we didn't get too much of outside of the Iron Man movies (kinda).

Doomsday Book
In terms of overall quality, I actually find this South Korean film to be one of the best movies of 2012 both critically and subjectively. In fact, it has three short movies around 40 minutes each. The first was a finely crafted "infected population" type of horror drama, which is high praise since I'm not really into such movie types. The second is a silence-inducing science fiction drama about a robot that becomes "awakened" and presents it in a very believable fashion. A real ethical dilemma ensues, even for us viewers. The third short is an apocalyptic dramedy that is just a lot of fun. Each short has its own (excellent) characters, style, and tone. All so well done.

The Dark Knight Rises
Though more flawed than the films in the trilogy that preceded it, The Dark Knight Rises still held me on with a gripping atmosphere where at times I felt the real sense of fear and hopelessness that people in the film would've felt. I can see why some people wouldn't like the score but I liked it myself. A very good "experience" film is the way I would describe it. As just a film, again I say it falls short of BB and TDK.

John Carter
Unfortunately plagued by its own latecomer status and a budget that swelled to some $250M, John Carter actually turned out to be one of my favorite movies so far. True, I've criticized the flat chemistry between Carter and the Princess, but really aside from that the movie is exciting and fun to watch. For whatever reason it seems to get compared a lot to Avatar, but having seen both I'd take John Carter every time.

The Hunger Games
It is nice to pick out some of the social and political themes portrayed in this movie intentionally or otherwise. It doesn't manage to avoid every Hollywood pitfall but as a whole is a strong film that values family, what's right, and the greater essence of humanity itself. Since Catching Fire will have a new director, I guess we will just have to wait and see where the sequel will take this franchise. In all, probably the weakest of the five here, but being number five out of 20 is impressive nevertheless.

The Avengers, Chronicle, and The Dark Knight Rises have been my favorite movies so far. Prometheus was a MASSIVE disappointment. I enjoyed it enough, but I expected SO much more.

I actually think my favorite has been The Cabin in the Woods, however. It was funny and satirical, while still remaining scary.

Wrath of the Titans was easily one of the shittiest big budget movies I've seen. And I've seen all three Transformers.

I'm hoping Dredd, The Master, Skyfall, Life of Pi, The Hobbit, and Django Unchained make up for the disappointments of 2012.

New list.

Great:
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Avengers
Cabin in the Woods
The Dark Night Rises
The Expendables 2
Prometheus

Good:

The Grey
John Carter
Men in Black III
The Lorax

Bad:

The Hunger Games
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
Underworld: Awakening

I might see Dredd but Skyfall and The Hobbit are the only major movies that I plan to see next. After that, my 2012 movie list will be complete. Everything else I will watch on DVD when it comes out at the Red Box.
