While this isn't a Superman thread, no, no you aren't. I find him, as a character, to be incredibly boring and almost unrelatable.

Well I don't "hate" Superman, but he's boring as a superhero IMO. I find the designs, stories, and depth or potential depth around characters like Green Lantern, Batman, or Martian Manhunter to be more exciting.

Superman has his ups and downs. I used to be a diehard Superman fan for years. I think I have every single issue from Our Worlds at War until Infinite Crisis. Seriously, it just got bad after awhile. When Superman was semi-cartoony, it was good. But then they try to crowbar in some shit...

Superman/Batman was also good for a LONG while.

I used to dislike Superman also. That changed when I became a teenager and watched the 78 film and Superman II, suddenly realizing how much more I liked them than any of the Batman movies. I grew up a Batman nut, and I watched the movies endlessly, but it was a sudden realization of just that they weren't really that good. Even Burton's original suddenly felt mediocre (and I think even less of even to this day). This was many years before Batman Begins, mind you.

Since then I've taken a look as Superman as a character. Yes, I agree his lack of flaws make him a less compelling study candidate than Batman or Spider-Man, but there's something else about him that compels me, and that might very well be the lack of flaws. Superman is a guardian angel. He's the one you can always trust. He's the one who will never back down. He's the friend that will always be by your side. He never gives up hope, and he is the very incarnation of the concept.

One of the reasons why I did enjoy Superman Returns was because it took a look at those concepts: "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman" vs. "Why the World Needs Superman." At the end when Superman is dying, of course we as an audience know he'll pull through, but to see the reaction of the world thinking that he might not shows just how many lives he touched by being who he is, and being the one they could look up to. Of course, I'm not disappointed Bryan Singer didn't continue his series (his ideas for the next film were uninspired), because the film wrote itself into a corner. There wasn't really anywhere else for it to go. It's best to just leave it as a one-shot love letter to Donner's film.

Superman still isn't my favorite superhero, but I grew to respect him as I grew up, and I do love seeing him in action.

Superman is not my favorite character neither, but I'm on the same boat as Gawdziller that I didn't care for the character until I was older. I think we are starting to go bit off topic.

I also think Superman is kind of boring. He's practically the epitome of Lawful Good. Not very interesting, and not even being human doesn't help much. He doesn't seem to have a lot of emotion. But then I'm not all that well-versed in the various works out based around him.

On the subject of Watchmen - the movie was pretty good, but I think the comic is far superior. The full complexity of the graphic novel simply doesn't fit into a feature film, even a rather long one. There are so many aspects overlooked and so much universe building ignored that the film simply doesn't capture what made the book so great. I think a TV mini-series would be a far better format for a screen adaptation of the comic.

I haven't. I admit my exposure to Superman is quite limited, but that's just the general impression I get. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. If he's getting more development lately, that's fantastic.

The stuff from The New 52 IMHO is very weak. I cant read it. I think Didio, Lee and Johns have a hard on for the 1970s and 80s Silver Age shit. They pretty much kicked Wally West, Kyle Rayner and Carter Hall from their respective titles (Flash, Green Lantern and Hawkman) and have skreeonk it up to the point it more over reminds me of the Extreme Era. I admit, some of the non-Superman books are good - like Fury of Firestorm the Nuclear Men, Aquaman, The Ray, Green Lantern New Guardians, Red Lanterns - but most are just BAD (Batgirl, Batwoman, Green Lantern Corps, Teen Titans, Superboy).

But Superman from 2001-2003 got more cartoony. It was all about extreme plots and villains. Like Saturday morning cartoon. It was VERY enjoyable. But when Superman/Batman started up the core books got GREAT. Then I think Jim Lee skreeonk it up all...

So is this thread about the movie only, or can we talk about anything Watchmen related?

What are your opinion on this "Before Watchmen" project?

Im mixed on it. Alan Moore hates it. But he's an elitist now. Thinks he's God's gift to comics. Sorry, Kirby alredy has the title of Comic Book God. I might pick up some issues, see if it's worthwhile. Id like to see some Nite Owl and Comedian stories.

Moore's just fed up with the industry. He can actually be quite sweet and inspirational at book readings and stuff.

I will read the Rorshach issues. But the others don't hold my interest enough.

Before Watchmen looks like it might be the Terminator 3 of the Watchmen series. I don't think the new comics are going to turn out very good at all. I bet you that they will end up doing a movie out of the Before Watchmen comics soon.

So I watched Watchmen The Ultimate Cut. With extended scenes, delete scenes and The Black Freighter edited into the movie. I dug it MUCH more then the original theatrical. I still find The Black Freighter boring and the plot is a bit shallow and predicable.

Watching this time I found myself more drawn to The Comedian - finding his character tragic in the end.

I prefer the director's cut. It has everything except for the stupid Black Freighter film.

Sometime I still have to track down the Ultimate Cut. The director's cut is the one I've been watching.
