^ Absolutely. Testament to a very well made movie when you just have voices over the radio describing what they're seeing, and that alone is absoutely gripping and nothing short of terrifying.

The Dawn of the Dead remake is extremely overrated.

I don't have the insane amount of love for it that some do, but unlike so many other recent remakes that are just soulless carbon copies of the films they're based on, if you took away the original Dawn it still stands on it's own as a fairly well made and fun movie. Plus, zombie baby! Hard not to love a zombie baby.

Zombie baby sucked ass. It was one of the most pitiful attempts at being "edgy" I've ever seen.

Overall the Dawn remake was boring and mediocre. There was pretty much nothing about it I could get into, except a drinking game of all the slow mo shots of bullet shells hitting the floor. Other than that it's just a painless timewaster/waste of time (one or the other).

In light of people 28 days/weeks later, (sigh of disgust). There were parts I enjoyed and parts that made me facepalm. Plus they're not really zombie movies ;)

night of the living dead
children shouldn't play with dead things
living dead at manchester mourge/let sleeping corpses lie
dawn of the dead
zombie flesh eaters/zombie 2
burial ground
the beyond
city of the living dead
evil dead
day of the dead
return of the living dead
zombie death house/death house
evil dead 2
night of the living dead-tom savini remake

i tried to think of them in order as best as i could. IMHO there haven't been to many great zombie flicks since about 1990 or so. maybe a few here and there, but for the most part they're either too silly or just stupid.

Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Braindead
Shaun of the Dead
White Zombie
The Serpent and the Rainbow

It wasn't very good but I thought The Dead Next Door had an interesting idea going. They aren't exactly zombie movies but I like Romero's Crazies and 28 Days/Weeks Later.

Zombies never interested me that much. I mean, they are cool, but I just don't get what is so awesome about them that makes them THAT much different then other monsters.

So I would have to say my 2 favorites are Zombieland and Fido.

nobody has mentioned Fido yet??

I agree with you, I find werewolves much more interesting but there seems to be a lack of good werewolf films. I believe Fido was mention earlier, and I just finished Zombieland. Probably one of the best films I've seen over my vacation.

I've always found zombies to be the most interesting. They're hardly used effectively outside of a handful of films though. What I love about zombies is what you can do with them- such as social satire, living thru an apocalypse, or how humans can be bigger threats to each other than the zombies (which is a big theme in Day of the Dead). I also find zombies terrifying. Their strength in numbers, a loved one coming back, they're pretty much death creeping up on you.

Any Fulci zombie film. That includes Zombi 2, City of the Living Dead, The Beyond, Zombi 3, and Conquest (it has zombies!).

Also, go with Romero's first four Living Dead movies. I still like to believe he's still on hiatus after Land of the Dead...

Oh, and Hell of the Living Dead. It's not that scary, but it is one of the (unintentionally) funniest films I've seen.

This. (Though I personally don't care for SHAUN..can't stand British humor)

I'd also add

-Zombi 2 (aka ZOMBIE in the U.S., hands down, one of the best zombie films ever made)
-Return of the Living Dead ( funny as hell)
-The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue (A criminally underrated film)
-Zombi 3 (Silly Italian zombie flick, lots of fun)
-Hell of the Living Dead aka Night of the Zombies (So bad it's good. It has to be seen to be believed)

Stay far, far away from the 2008 "remake" of DAY OF THE DEAD. It's supposed to be god awful. Like Proof said, stick with the Romero classic from '85.

I'd avoid Romero's more recent zombie films unless you're already a big fan of his work. I personally really like SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD, and I enjoy LAND OF THE DEAD for what it is..though I don't know that I'd go as far to recommend them to people. LAND is especially bland, and SURVIVAL, being an indie zombie film, it may simply not appeal to some people. (Some of the acting can be cringe worthy).

It is god awful. I mean, you wanna talk about bastardizations, this is a top contender for the worst. Take the word of someone who had the misfortune of watching it, avoid this waste of film reels as though it were the plague.

I'm really glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed Survival of the Dead! I personally think it's a fun little zombie movie! Also enjoyed Land quite a bit, but i understand why some people wouldn't like it. I wonder just how much studio interference Romero had (running time, proper characterizations etc)

What does this mean exactly? That you pretend the two films he did after LAND just didn't happen..or something? :eh:

Oh, and Hell of the Living Dead. It's not that scary, but it is one of the (unintentionally) funniest films I've seen.

Actually, it's not even remotely scary, but it IS funny as hell.

Yeah, I really like it, actually. Sure, it's a little rough around the edges, but I find it to be miles better than DIARY, which I just can't bring myself to like, no matter how many times I try watching it.

From what I understand, George wasn't too fond of working with a major studio when he did LAND. Universal was very excited when they picked up the film, and it did extremely well overseas, though the experience just left him wanting to do stuff independently again.

I met George at a horror convention back in 2010, and he told me that the odds of him working with another major studio again were very low.

I hated both Land of the Dead and Survival of the Dead but, I thought Diary of the Dead was at least entertaining despite the bad acting.
