Simple rebooty type titles are popular now.

I remember reading that they called it "John Carter" to avoid confusing with other movies with the same title. The Sci-Fi Channel made a John Carter movie a few years back

I read somewhere on Comicbookmovie news they gave us an explanation.

Calling it John Carter and the princess of mars wouldn't draw in the boys or something because it sounds to girl or something and they couldn't call it John Carter of Mars because woman wouldn't be into it or something. So the compromise is John Carter. If I ever find the article, I'll post it.

But yeah, REALLY hoping we get a sequel I really do because the Alien genre is kind of dying as of Late. Moms need mars did BADLY, GL did kind of bad depending on how you look at it, Cowboys and aliens are almost in the same boat as Green Lantern, and then there's what people say how alien flicks are as good as they use to be.
A proud supporter of just leaving Alienhulk's opinions of films alone and a butthurt non-supporter of the man of steel topic who won't post there until it's merged with the other superman topic.

^The Alien genre is hardly dead, Battle: Los Angeles came out this year and did pretty well at the box office. The Darkest Hour comes out this Christmas and you got both Men in Black III, and Prometheus coming out next year. You also forgot that Transformers 3 and Apollo 18 came out this year as well.

If you ask me, the last thing that we need is more Aliens in films. They are becoming over used like Zombies and Vampires.

I'm cautiously excited. I'm worried that this film might rely too much on Burroughs's "if it's bad, than smash it" style of writing. While, it's fun its own little world, I feel like it might not make for a good film.

Disney just started to do more marketing on the film since most people still don't know about the film. This doesn't come as much of a surprise to Disney since they nervous that it will lose a significant amount of money after the recent box office bomb of Mars Needs Mom's.

On the good side, the movie is getting some good reviews. I hope the word of mouth will help the film.

I saw John Carter with a friend. My two cents:

I think it suffers from the same editing problems that plagued Disney's Prince of Persia film. It felt like certain scenes were trimmed down to the point of not being fully coherent. And in regards to the script and acting, sometimes the film felt so melodramatically stilted that I thought I was watching The Last Airbender again.

But then it would pull a 180 and stun me with some fantastic set piece or moments of genuinely clever humor. I wish the film made more of a distinction between Helium and Zoldanga. Sab Than had so little characterization that, at times, I even forgot he was the antagonist. The Therns were interesting, if under utilized. All in all, the film is visually impressive, but only occasionally rises above muddled mediocrity. Furthermore, I know the Barsoom cycle came long before Star Wars or Avatar, but to see it on film inevitably led my friend and I to make Star Wars jokes.

Regardless, I hope it performs well enough that Disney considers adapting stories like At the Earth's Core and The Land that Time Forgot.

My only real complaint was that some aspects felt rushed. Particularly Carter's romance with the Princess. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the movie and I hope it does well enough that we get a sequel.

The film was decent. Good special effects and action scenes, and at times its pretty darn fun. However, I think it struggles with adapting the swashbuckling adventure tone of Burroughs's original books to a coherent level for the screen. If one went in with little knowledge of the series or character I can honestly see them being very confused as to what was going on for the whole thing. I give a C+.

I went in with very little knowledge about John Carter. My brother never read about it at all. I think we both understood what was going on rather well. They did a good job explaining everything to the audience. But, I know they barely touched on some things that fans of the book might be annoyed with.

Okay. That's good to hear. I felt like there were parts that would have been lost on the uninitiated. Glad you could follow though.

I plan to see it later tonight, my friends enjoy it and said it's worth a good time at the cinema. I won't be surprise if the movie flops since the reviews are mixed and the movie had poor marketing. It could do well overseas and on DVD & Blu-Ray but I don't think it won't be enough to do a sequel. Some of the reviews that I read feel like it was a nock off of Avatar and Star Wars when John Carter came out years before those two films came out.

a video review i watched that was released by the new york post said more or less the same thing. He said other things that i'm not paying attention to, lest i don't see the movie with as open a mind as possible.

But seriously, the first modern hero is knocking off Star Wars and Avatar? That's like saying Zorro is a knockoff of Batman! -_-

actually, isn't John Carter the only 20th century hero that predates Zorro? lol

also i'm probably seeing it tonight, might post my thoughts on it

Saw it. It's a little rough in the pacing and the film lacks focus a bit. It's also horribly obsessed with justifying the magic cave in the beginning, but whatever.

I love this archaic style of science-fiction and fantasy and it was a joy to see on the big screen with the scope that modern cinema can provide. I got a real kick out of it.

It had a few narrative problems, but overall, it wasn't bad.

You know, Mark Strong may be typecast, but he's good at his roles.

I thought I was not going to like the film since Jeremy Jahns give a mixed review of the film on his latest review and I do tend to agree with his reviews. I just came back from seeing it and I personally really enjoy it. I think the movie did a good job on capturing the feeling the feel of the book. All of the action scenes where enjoyable, the art of this movie was great as well. I had great time but I do feel like the characters could be done better. 7.5/10
