That one is probably my second favorite; however I don't care for it much, because it's just so SLOW.

I just bought the entire collection of Showa DVDs and I'm watching them one by one. So far it has been enjoyable, my wife finds them easier to watch than Heisei Godzilla films ;)

lol pwnt

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what people expect out of Showa Gamera. I find most of the movies to be great fun, though the first two are a little on the dull side at times. I think I already said so in this thread, but I really enjoy the whacky, nonsensical ones like Guiron. What a trip of a movie!

Okay, I just watched Gamera vs. Zigra. That was a chore to watch.

It's painfully obvious that this film was intended for 5-year-olds. There are points where the the movie is so bad that it's funny, but most of the time it's so bad that it's cringe-worthy. Zigra himself is really the only positive about this movie. He's a neat monster, and it's interesting to see a kaiju on the same level of intelligence as humans. He can't save the movie, though.
1/10.

The MST3K version ought to be good, at least.

Just out of curiosity, did you watch it subbed or dubbed? Gamera vs Zigra has one of the worst dub jobs of ANY Japanese film I've ever seen, watching it subbed for me is the only way its tolerable without MST3K. Yes the MST3K version is always good for many many laughs. :D

I just wish there was more footage of the Land-Zigra suit in action. I really dig it. :D

I refused to watch it dubbed. However, I finally checked Goohead's version and found that it was, in fact, Japanese subbed. All this time I had assumed it was the dubbed version.

...So, no, I did not watch it dubbed. In fact, I'm all the more wary of seeing that version now.

What about it?

GUIRON and ZIGRA have two of the worst dubs I've ever heard for anything in my life, and I've seen a lot of dubbed films. You're insane if you think they're the best of the best.

None of the Sandy Frank dubs are good (GAMERA or ZIGRA). The ones for BARUGON and GYAOS are 'good' because they weren't done by Sandy Frank, but by the same crew that dubbed the 70's Godzilla films in Hong Kong. I don't know who the hell dubbed GUIRON, but it's horrendous.

Sandy Frank is better because it's what everyone saw first and what's on MST3K.

Nostalgia > Accuracy.

It's why Anime Labs fansubs of DB-Z-GT are better.
It's why Eagle Riders and Battle for the Planets are better then Gatchaman.
Why Fighting Foodons is better then Bistro Recipe.
Why Ronin Warriors is better then Samurai Troopers.

No, it's not better just because you say it is. Mother of Christ, you are one thick headed mother skreeonk. For real.

The two dubs that Sandy Frank actually did themselves are the worst dubs I have ever heard for a Japanese science fiction film, and most would agree with me. They are wretched. You being all nostalgic about them doesn't make them good by default. It doesn't work that way. But you know that. You're obviously not 7 years old anymore.

Wataru, we've been over this before, the sandy frank dubs were what YOU grew up with, not everyone else. I had seen most of the Gamera AIP/TV dubs long before MST3K. AIP/TV IS Nostalgia. Sandy Frank is :eh: . It really says something when as a 14 year old kid I fist got my hands on those "Kids Ent" VHS tapes and said "What the heck are wrong with their voices?"

You like them, thats great, its what you know. Cant expect everyone else whos been drinking real milk all their life to all of a sudden convert to soy milk, because you grew up with it and like it. If you ever get a chance to watch August Ragone's intro to the MST3K DVD's I'd advise it. He does give Sandy Frank credit where it is do for bringing the property back into the public eye via MST3K, but it certainly wasn't new to most people.

Ew soy milk. I grew up with whole milk with vitamin D!

If August Ragone's name is on it, Im not buying it. Sorry, his shenanigans with DAM and GvsMegs was enough to turn me off to anything he does, says, thinks or feels.

I wish I could put into words how ridiculous this sounds. I really wish I could.

So you don't intend to ever purchase or enjoy anything Japanese monster related ever again that might have even a small, trivial relation to August Ragone in some way, shape or form? Those Shout Factory Gamera DVDs and Sandy Frank MST3K sets can be enjoyed even if you completely ignore the bonus features featuring Ragone. It's pretty funny to think that this business with August and the Media Blasters releases could piss you off on such a deep, personal level that you could have a reaction like that. It's guys like you that have pushed August away from participating in forums like this. It's pretty sad.

Let's just agree to disagree here you two. I can see this blowing up real quick. And wataru, I know you're expressing an opinion here, but August is also a member here, so TECHNICALLY, it could be considered flaming.

So yeah, let's just let this one go.
