I don't think that this movie will win over back many fans.

Re: The Official Star Wars Saga Thread
This movie completely lost me when they decided to bring The Emperor back.
That is so lazy, stupid, and desperate, I could probably write a dissertation about it.
Granted, Old Palpy will probably be the best thing in the movie by virtue of him being such a fun character, but good God this is the most desperate thing these new Star Wars movies have pulled.

At the start of the trailer we knew nothing about the film's plot, and at the end of it we still don't know anything. Nice.

Not to mention how it renders Anakin Skywalker's/Darth Vader's sacrifice in ROTJ utterly pointless.GojiDog wrote:This movie completely lost me when they decided to bring The Emperor back.

Maybe it's just me but...at this point, they should bring back ol' George, ret-con the sequel trilogy out of existence, and let him finish the saga in the way he wanted. It might not be good, but at least it would have a vision.

I usually tear up watching Star Wars trailers. Not the case with any Rise of Skywalker trailer, and especially not this one. I didn't feel any sort of emotion except maybe pity for the franchise.
I was fooled once with TLJ. I don't very much care to be fooled again.

Re: The Official Star Wars Saga Thread
I haven't seen TLJ or Solo but this looks like more of the same-old crap to me. Lots of "let's see how many CGI characters and spaceships we can fill the frame with" and "beautiful scenery occupied by digital hooey" mentality with filmmakers today. I'd comment on the story but the trailer doesn't even give us a hint of what's going on so I'm just going to assume it's irrelevant.
Rant: one of the biggest sins of the special editions was Lucas adding anything and everything he could to any shot that could take it. Star Wars of course was made in 1977 with technology that prevented compositing 100+ ships into shots, and while that may have been the intent anyway, the creators were able to compose lively, populated shots and sequences without doing all that. By Jedi they'd worked out a technique that allowed some dozens of craft to inhabit the Battle of Endor, but even then I don't think they overdid it.
That, to me, is what's missing in all these moronic CGI-fests that come out anymore. Restraint. It's a sensibility that is lost on too many of today's "auteurs," such as JJ Abrams (lol). They do it to make their films feel bigger and more "epic," but in reality I think it's just very tiring after a while. It overloads the senses and oftentimes there's too much going on for you to take in exactly what the hell is supposed to be going on. There are only so many times I can watch a hundred spaceships shooting lasers at each other before I get bored, and I think I reached that limit back in 2005.
It just brings to mind the old adage: just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
Anyway, Daisy Ridley is gorgeous. But beyond that, uh... pass. I'm not sure who this is supposed to appeal to: fans don't seem all that enthused and it certainly didn't capture my interest. But somehow this will still make a bajillion dollars.

Re: The Official Star Wars Saga Thread
No matter what advances are made in special effects, nothing Star Wars can muster up can match the tension and drama of The Battle of Yavin. For my money, it is the greatest aerial dogfight ever put to film.
There is something to be said for working within limitations. When you have no limitations to the images you can create, you can sacrifice creativity.
Movies like Jaws, Alien and Aliens, OT Star Wars, and our beloved Kaiju films would have been very different movies if they were made with modern effects, and I'd argue they'd be less good.
Hell, look at the difference between The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit Trilogy. Its like two different worlds almost, and the earlier one is better.

Had George Lucas not taken the ball in his own hands The PT would likely be superior to the OT in people's eyes.

Man, the music in that trailer is seriously amazing. Love it. Won't be checking the movie out in theaters, but may give it a watch when the DVDs/Blu-rays are released. Far more invested in all these crazy channels covering the rumors and press surrounding the movie than the movie itself

While I didn't hate The Last Jedi and thought Solo was ok, They did however zap any excitement I would've had for this movie.
Hopefully it's good.

In my mind, 3PO was talking about R2 and Chewie while also having flashbacks to Luke, Leia, and Han.

This explains why Disney failed with Star Wars, but succeeded with Marvel and Pixer.

Re: The Official Star Wars Saga Thread
I absolutely hate that The Emperor is being brought back for this, and including the Death Star II ruins makes it even more obvious that they are tying everything to Return of the Jedi, which will surely invite the Force Awakens criticisms of just rehashing the old and living in the shadow of the superior trilogy.
All that said, I know that The Emperor is sadly going to be the best thing in the movie.
