The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

One of the very few sequels that lives up to the original if you ask me. The characters are great, the effects are brilliant, the story is fun. But I DO feel they could of been a bit more faithful to the book in this case. Although it was awesome and fun, I wasn't a big fan of the "Rex on the loose" ending. It just didn't feel like a jurassic park film with that tacked on.

Godzilla against Mechagodzilla

It's not the best of the millenium series, but it does offer a fast paced story and pleasing 2cd battle. The subplot with the officer seeking redemption doesn't bring empathy IMO. Her performance is a bit too two dimensional. The Kiryu suit looks great, though.

The Avengers (2012)
Only the fourth 2012 movie I've seen so far but this definitely sets the standard for movies by leaps and bounds. The Avengers was extremely hyped up, and yet in my book it lived up to the excessive hype. No, it isn't the most sophisticated, deep movie that The Dark Knight Rises is expected to be, but this movie never promises that sort of thing. It's well done, but it's mainly about being WILDLY entertained, and man is it FUN. I could've smiled through the whole thing. The humor was generally placed well and had the audience laughing. The action sequences were excellent, as were the special effects. I don't really want to say much else for fear of spoiling it for anyone, but this jumps immediately on my list as one of the best superhero movies. I cannot wait for the sequel (and I'm sure there will be one). All I can really say beyond that is: ladies and gentlemen, they did it. They successfully brought all of the superheros together, several of them from the well known franchises of their own. It's unique in that way and they didn't screw it up in the slightest.

Super (2010)

I liked it. That's it. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was a funny parody of superheroes. Kevin Bacon was pretty good, And so were Ellen and Rainn. Although Rain seemed kind of stiff when we was out of the costume.

I could easily see Will Ferrel in the role of Frank. Their humor was pretty much identical.

I still think the movie would of ran a little smoother without all the in your face violence. It just didn't fit. The tone of the film was pretty light and humorous, then Boltie smashes a kids over the head with a vase. Causing the shards to slice through his skin causing some serious bleeding? ehh?

I knew Boltie was going to die. That was predictable.

Spawn (1997) - I watch the PG-13 cut with a group of friends on livestream and I haven't seen this cut of the movie in years. I'm so used to watching the director's cut and all of the edits that they made to get a PG-13 rating was painful to sit through. This movie is still not very good, the movie is just a water down version of the comics. I still don't like John Leguizamo as Clown/Violator and Martin Sheen could have done a much better job. Michael Jai White as Spawn, Spawn's costume, and the Violator effects are the best thing about this film. You are better off reading the comics (From the 1992 up to David Hine's run), and watching the HBO series since they are much better. The Director's Cut is better which is not saying a whole lot.

Attack the Block
Excellent film. Excellent practical creature effects, mixed in with just the right amount of cgi. I loved it, and I loved the fact that it was a violent and bloody flick, that not many would probably get from seeing just the trailer.

The Grey (2011) - a bit of a let down. It's basically a survival film. The plot is extremely simple, with mediocre acting from everyone, including Liam. The CGI wolves didnt do much for me either. While I did enjoy it, because I love wolves, the movie isnt that good.

Communion (1989) - starring Christopher Walken, this movie based on the book by horror/thriller writer Whitley Streiber fails to do anything but confuse you to death. So Whitley is writing about his own alien abduction but it seems.... like a bad acid trip. It's so obvious he was DREAMING and not being abducted. Walken's performance was heckled but I found it refreshing. For 1989 the aliens were goofy.

Toy Story (1995) - Still very cute and a good start for Pixar. I dug how the toys actually got DIRTY over time. The story was cute.

Toy Story 2 (1999) a good sequel. The introduction of Jesse was brillant. She's my #2 favorite character (behind Buzz). IMHO superior to the first and the next logical step

Toy Story 3 (2010). ALOT of this movie was slow and boring. Im sick of Woody's friends ditching him so easily or not believing him. IMHO not good friends. Movie did make me cry when Andy gave Bonnie his toys. I wish all toys had this kinda story...

Jurassic Park (1993) – I haven’t watched the original in ages so I decided to dust off my DVD yesterday and enjoy a film that I’m still blown away will be 20 years old next year. I don’t even think I ever watched it in Hi-def before, as it looked amazing upscaled for a non BRD. I was mostly watching to take notes as I hoped to finally show this film to my kids who are now 6 & 7 and have a great interest in Dinosaurs. I know many probably think I’m too restrictive, but I want to be able to edit past the parts I feel are too gory, or scary. Most of the chase scenes are ok, but I just don’t want them to see any of the parts where Dinosaurs are eating people (Gennaro, Nedry, Muldoon, & Arno’s disembodied arm etc…). I explain to my kids that these scenes DO exist, and they can watch them when they are of appropriate age if they choose to. Also I have shown them concept art and CG models as well as pictures of the animatronic Dinosaurs being filmed so they of course know it’s not real, but it is fun to imagine they are. I enjoy showing my kids movies for the first time, and seeing how excited they get, and that is the whole point, to enjoy the film without any trauma. I don’t know when I’m going to show it to them, probably this weekend, but it should be fun.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): This movie was somewhat better than I expected. At first, I thought that it would be a pretty lame movie made just to cash in money, but some parts of it were cool. I liked Captain America's motorcycle, the train scene, and the end was very good. On the other side of the spectrum, however, the jokes were bland and I thought that the Nazi laser guns were kind of stupid. It is a decent movie to watch once or twice. 6/10

Ben Hur (1959): I watched this entire three and a half hour movie straight, and I thought it was fantastic. I can see why critics claim that it is a masterpiece today: epic story, monstrous sets, large casts, and crazy stunts. This movie had naval battles, chariot races, and several other things that made it groundbreaking. Charlie Heston was great as Judah Ben Hur, and the Christ scenes were done nicely and respectfully. If you have time and patience, I would recommend that you watch this movie. I happened to watch really late in night, so I really didn't have much else to do. I really can't complain about much, and the reason for such a long time length is understandable. 9.5/10

War of the Worlds (1953): I find this movie to be far better than the 2005 remake with Tom Cruise by far. This movie was one of the best sci-fi films from the time that I have seen behind Forbidden Planet (1956). This movie is very entertaining, carries its message about nuclear war very well, and had great special effects for its time. The movie lacks tripods, but the aliens in this movie are still menacing nonetheless. In the end, this seems to me like the defining sci-fi blockbuster of the 1950s. 8/10

I plan to watch The Day the Earth Stood Stll (1951) very soon.

Signs (2002) - IMHO one of M. Night Shyamalan's better films. But again, all the actors are totally interchangeable, flat and boring. Has very few jump moments and the end was VERY lack luster.

The Village (2004) - IMHO his best film. The film's twist is totally unexpected, but the ending is a bit quick and flat.

Lady in the Water (2006) - I agree, vapid and pretentious. Has alot of potential but the set up for the chain of events is forced SO HARD. And all the characters have zero dimension outside of Mr Heep/Giamatti. I dug the story but the movie was a failed execution

The 13th Warrior (1999) - STILL love this adaptation of Beowulf. I find every character loveable and well rounded for being based on a VERY old story.

Haywire (2012)
First things first: Gina Carano will hopefully be in more films. She has the appearance and personality to really be a great action movie star. Some great martial arts movies could lie ahead along with some more thrillers such as this one. Back to the movie itself, Haywire has a quaint, simple charm to it. It looks, feels, and sounds like a classic espionage thriller from the 1970s. The story is relatively straight forward and simple, and it is completed well enough that it has no glaring faults. Just a decent film that doesn't feel too big or try too hard, but in a way it may not be remembered because of this very fact. The female agent angle does remind me of films like Salt, which I liked more, but check this out if it sounds interesting to you.

Open Season 3- This franchise keeps surprising me. The first one has a special place in my heart, since I saw it on a birthday and all, but I didn't have high hopes for either of its predecessors. They proved me wrong. The second was way more enjoyable than a direct-t-home sequel has any right to be, and this one follows that same trend. It was a real sweet little film. I loved Alistair, he's a fun character. Reminds me of Sid from Ice Age, just flamboyant and hispanic. Seeing the pet crew from Open Season 2 return was neat as well. But, like the second, I could have done without the songs.

Overall, another surprisingly good sequel.

Planet of the Apes: My favorite of the original series. Acting is solid, plot is fantastic, and the make-up effects are extraordinary. It's interesting to see the conflict between religion and science which is paralleled in our society. It adds a certain depth that curbs as the series progressed. And, believe it or not, Rod Serling co-wrote the screenplay. Dien and Serling put out one heck of a screenplay, and the movie rightfully earned its Emmy-Awards. 5/5
Beneath the Planet of the Apes: While it falls short to the original, BtPotA is still a great entry to the series, boasting another religious conflict. The use of religion for warring purposes is haunting. The protest scene reminds me of the protests that were going on during the Vietnam War. The make-up effects, due to a lower budget, were not on par with its predeccessor, but the movie still stands strong. 4/5
Escape From the Planet of the Apes: First off, I find it odd that a species who doubts the very possibility of flight manages to get into a spaceship (presumably the one Col. Taylor flew in) and get off Earth before the apocalypse. Also, I don't understand why it is set two years in the future. *sigh* Nitpicking aside, this is a good entry in the series and has some humorous moments as well as suspensful and dark ones. 3.5/5
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes: Another nitpick coming in. Cornelius and Zira described the process of domestication of apes to have been over centuries, yet the full enslavement of the species was only after 18 years. That makes sense. Anyways, I love this one. Critically, it's flawed. However, I prefer over any of the other sequels, and Roddy McDowall's argument with McDonald at the end is one of the my favorite scenes in movie history. Personally, 5/5. Critically, 3.5/5
Battle for the Planet of the Apes: Looking from where we came from to this, the series has gone downhill. And this is the bottom. The character of McDonald is replaced by his brother--who is not mentioned in Conquest (casting problems, I'm sure)--which is a slight disappointment, but can be overlooked. The film itself is lackluster. Compared to its predeccessors, I feel it's dull and suffers. The villains aren't compelling, and I feel it tried to make everything end on a high note, but it doesn't come with the epic climatic battle one would hope for. Disappointing, but still check it out if you find it. 2/5

DNA: A stupid monster movie. Was literally Alien and Predator fused, and left me with more questions that anything else. Why did the little kid know where the evil scientist's super secret base was? Why did they take the little kid on such a dangerous mission? Why did they keep letting the little kid wander off and get in trouble? Why did the doctor have military-level combat skills? Why did the little kid die from being grazed by the monster? Why did anyone allow the end of Predator to be ripped off so badly? Some of the stop motion stuff just looked silly too.

The boat chase was cool though, as was the final confrontation and the 'unknown attacker running on the roof' bit. Okay as dumb entertainment, but looses serious points for lack of originality.

I definitely need to do an Apes Marathon soon.

Battle is pretty rough and a definitely a couple steps below the prestige of the first one. But I found it to be solidly put together, interesting, and just as entertaining as Conquest which remains quite remarkable. Especially in regards to Roddy McDowell's performance as Caesar.


Last film I watched was The American Astronaut ; a film set in an alternate world where Space has been colonized by oddball roughnecks in garbage-y looking contraptions, it centers around one space trucker Sam Curtis who rendezvous with his old friend The Blueberry Pirate in a space tavern with a mission; transport a Real Live Human Girl to Jupiter (A desolate mining colony where the entire population is entirely men) and trade the girl for The Boy Who Had Seen A Womens Breast and take the boy to Venus and trade him for the body of their old Dead King so his family on Earth can bury him.

Also it's a rockabilly-ish musical.

The A Team (2010) - A movie with explosions and guns. Totally forgettable but fun. Needed more Jessica Biel though. Liam Neeson did an amazing job.
