Contact (1997) -
God Jodi Foster is horrible. She's good in ONE movie - Silence of the Lambs - and that's only for her back-n-forth with Hopkins. This movie is dull and you cant get behind a single character. The ending was the best part but it's just another film to capitalize on the Mars Rover
Personally: 1/5
Critically: 2/5

Red Planet (2000) -
Val Kilmer before he got stung by 9000 bees. The movie tries that slick Lost in Space/Matrix feel for the suits and tech, but falls short because it sucks. It's basically "Look at sexy Val... oo there's a robot! And some alien bugs that are.... stupid." Movie's SPFX are insanely good though. Basically, it's a PS1 era video game made to a movie.
Personally: 2/5
Critically: 2/5

Mission to Mars (2000) -
Ahh Miramax is gonna try now. Another 20XX film about dudes going to Mars. Amazing cast but it comes off as childish. The SPFX arent great compared to the other Mars film above. The Martian is VERY hokey and the ending is just so out there. Like WTF he's just going to leave EVERYONE behind?!
Personally: 2/5
Critically: 1.5/5

Troll Hunter (2009/2010) -
God this film is so much fun to watch. Jerky cam made perfect. All the trolls are so amazingly done for a small budget film. Hell I even like the goofy dubbing. I hope they never make a sequel to this film. It's just perfect. I wouldve dug some toys though, or a companion book.
Personally: 4/5
Critically: 3/5

Aliens (1986) -
Ok I like this movie better then ALIEN. I just find it more enthralling. I like the characters more - Hudson and Hicks are my favorite. This movie started the Space Marine era of video games, movies, toys and RPGs. Also Cameron did an amazing job picking up the reigns from Scott. The ending is still classic.
Personally: 5/5
Critically: 4.5/5

Arthur (2011) -
This film gets alot of hate, but it didnt set out to set the world on fire. It's basically a remake of the original Dudley Moore film. It was very cute at times, especially the opening scene with the Batmobile and Arthur Brand is just fun to watch. Like a childish Johnny Depp. I cant believe Helen Mirren was in this and when she died it was really VERY sad. I was like ...Noooo Arthur! And Greta Gerwig is freaking HOT!
Personally: 5/5
Critically: 2/5

That reminds me: I've never watched the entire dub, not that I'm really interested. I changed the setting to the dub for a few minutes once just to see it, but that's it. Other than some Godzilla movies for nostalgia's sake I guess I don't really watch dubs if I have a choice. Might try it sometime though. I wonder what the status is of CC's remake. I haven't seen anything since they secured the rights this time last year. I hope the remake is very different because it HAS to be. A straight, exacting found-footage, Norwegian looking troll film would be pointless (I'd argue it's already pointless to remake this movie, but you know Hollywood these days with regards to remakes and sequels). The troll in Snow White and the Huntsman actually looked super cool and something like that would be a striking looking beast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6uSLUnfna8 At least if they try hard enough they could have some light political commentary with the politics played in keeping the trolls a secret, the Hollywood grade special effects, and just a different execution around a lot of the same ideas.

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
I was cautiously optimistic about this movie since I already specifically thought myself that a return to the darker, grittier, fairy tale that originated in German folklore could make for an awesome movie. And the trailers made this looking pretty good too. Having seen it, meh. It was okay. It was too long and too forced to feel good. The visuals were excellent, but they really didn't make the movie feel deep. There was minimal discussion of Queen Ravenna's spell and her entire background, which if properly explored would've added a greater sense of tragedy and twisted pity for her that Snow White kiiinda displayed in the movie, sorta. Speaking of which, bashing Kristen Stewart and the movie due to her inclusion is annoying. There was enough to the story and events that could've been improved to make it better regardless of her, and even if she was brilliant here most of the bashers would still be against her and the movie anyway. It must be said, nonetheless, that criticizing her being cast as Snow White is still legitimate. She didn't display enough emotion and didn't really have a Snow White look or feel to her. Moreover, she was completely overshadowed in this movie. I -and I bet many viewers- were more interested and engaged by Queen Ravenna, the Huntsman, probably another character or two ... not good in a movie where you're supposed to be the main character. Anyhow, I should give up rambling now. It was okay. Not terrible or "bad", just another mediocre movie that looks really good and is bound to be gorgeous on Blu-Ray.
5/10

The Dictator (2012)
There's less to review here, but although it had funny scenes, I wouldn't say the whole movie was that funny. I dunno, it just failed to make me laugh the way this kind of a comedy should. There was enough entertainment for this to be a decent movie, but not enough to make it a great one. The idea of this kind of comedy is amusing, as un-PC as it is. Overall liked American Reunion a lot more as a comedy from this year. But having seen it once, I don't really care to ever see it again (not that I'm outright opposed to seeing it again, that is). At least I want to give Snow White and the Huntsman a second chance.

And if you'll look to your left, you can see the first movie where the dying shark gives off a growl as it sinks to the bottom of the ocean.

Madagascar 3. I have to admit, I thought this was going to be kinda bad. How wrong I was. It was simply great, and it seems every Dreamworks sequel gets better each time. I think my favorite character from the film would be the tiger(can't remember his name), cause he reminded me and my friend of the TF2 Heavy. Overall, this film was great. I'll try to see Prometheus.

Gargoyles: Wings of Darkness- Surprisingly good little B-movie. Liked the dramatic, if cheesy, music, and the swapped roles of the priests was clever. Took me by surprise. Oh, plus said priests fight, and there's a pretty awesome little exchange in there:

"Why don't you go to Hell?"
"Hell is coming to us!"

Snow White and The Huntsman (2012) -
I dug it. It's shallow. It's all about eye candy and effects basically. Chris Hemsworth, Kristin Stewart, Charlize (God she's so skreeonk hot..) Theron, Ian McShane and so many others. The CGI'ing of the midgets was very welll done. But the movie wont set the world on fire and it lacks alot in story.
Personally: 3.5/5
Critically: 2.5/5

Prometheus (2012) -
So far the biggest let down in 2012. The movie is CGi rampant with a weak AVP like storyline. Idris Elba was IMHO the best character, followed by David. The CGi was cartoony in the Engineers face and the aliens were more Starship Troopers then HG Greiger-esque.
Personally: 3/5
Critically: 3/5

The Dark Crystal (1982) -
Very dated, but still very fun to watch. 95% puppets. Only some humans in full body suits for the more difficult full body shots. Doesnt seem as epic as I remember, but definetly 80s sci fi/fantasy gold.

Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla -
I actually really enjoyed this film and it is actually in my Top 5 Favorite Godzilla Films of all time! (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9344&p=359739#p359739). I don't really understand nor do I agree with all the hate it seems to get. It had entertaining fights and some good acting scenes plus I loved the Godzilla suit!

Godzilla vs. Destroyah -
I liked this one but it is really overrated and over hyped. It did have some good emotional scenes with the main female character and especially with Godzilla and his son as well as some decent battles but it wasn't really anything more to me than average. Not to bad but not too good either...I liked it but not nearly as much as other ones.

Shoot me but I actually enjoyed Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla more!

Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon- I liked it. It was pretty dumb, but had some clever moments and likable characters. Well, a likable character. It was just fun, and I liked the creature and the explanations surrounding it. Reminded me of the book Thunderhead in a lot of ways. Bet they took some inspiration from it.

EDIT:

More! I've been watching a lot of B-movies lately.

Monster Dog- It's was a mixed bag. Okay, it mostly leaned towards bad, but it did have a few qualities I really liked, that creepy painting especially. The rest was kinda muddled and confusing, but still okay.

Wolf Moon- Ugh. Terrible, terrible movie. Hated it. Started out okay, but dragged on half an hour too long and slowly lost my interest. I couldn't stand the main dude's face by the end of it. Goofy werewolf costumes, unnecessary scenes, bloated romance.... it was just terrible. I don't like this movie, period. I'd much prefer Twilight over it, because I can laugh at Edward and his sparkly skin. With this, I hated it in a bitter, joyless way. It was awful. Like a dead animal. A dead pet. This movie was a dead pet, and I had to stare at its rotting juices for more than two hours.

Planet of the Apes (1968) -
Still a classic IMHO. Even the make up is still convincing. Everytime I see this film I get nostalgic because my dad bought it for me on DVD in 2001.
Personally: 5/5
Critically: 4.5/5

Splice (2009) -
Nell meets Species with a touch of Mimic. This film was utterly borning. Ouside the CGI and make up, it offers nothing. Like Mimic it was dull at parts, like it didnt know where to go with itself and like Species it tries too hard to make us care about the stars but theyre just flawed idiots. Waste of my time.
Personally: 1/5
Critically: 1/5

Conan the Barbarian (2011) -
WHOA how did I miss this film? IT'S GOT RON PERLMAN! I mean right there makes it own. But damn everything else about this film is FUN to watch. The swords, the 3D gore, the fighting. Jason Mamoa is just fun to watch be it on Stargate Atlantis, Game of Thrones or this. I hope it gets a sequel. I just hope a sequel is more historical.

I've already professed my love for PotA on here countless times. Splice was a good idea and IMO imagined somewhat better than The 6th Day which is a bit similar in its ideas and portrayal of like sciences. The movie itself is less successful in expanding on these ideas and all. I wasn't bored and still did like the movie, but it really could have been better. I think I rank it around 6.5/10. Conan the Barbarian I was not much a fan of right down to the awkward inclusion of Morgan Freeman's narration but to each his own. You'll be pleased to know that last I heard they were in talks for a CtB sequel but nothing's been formally announced.

On to my reviews ...

John Carter (2012)
I've never read the books and heard fans of the series talk about their hopes for a better adaptation of the novel in the future. I therefore cannot comment on the quality of the adaptation itself, but the movie was impressive on its own for me. There are a lot of obvious parallels to the way we socially view and relate ourselves in relation to others and their beliefs, the politics of war, etc. It was a fulfilling movies with some nice twists to keep you on your toes, even if some elements of the original books make this 2012 film appear to ape stuff out of popular science-fiction and fantasy like Star Wars and Avatar ... which it hasn't. For whatever reason this movie gets compared a lot to Avatar; I have to say this was certainly better than Avatar to me. As a whole, the movie is quality without much in the way of flaws (again the movie, the quality of it as a film adaptation of a book I cannot comment on). I have to ask though, how did they spend $250M on this thing? That's almost the budget of the entire LotR trilogy, not to mention John Carter doesn't have any big ticket stars to really draw in big audiences. The vague title, poor marketing, and exorbitant spending on this movie doomed it. Unfortunately, among the casualties were films two and three in what was supposed to be a trilogy. But this popular book series is hopefully going to spawn a new attempt at movie versions in the future.
8/10

The Grey (2012)
What an excellently crafted survival thriller. Liam Neeson was an excellent choice for casting as a main character. All of the actors did a great job, actually. Although the movie does take some liberties with cliches (I was able to guess who would die at various parts and the intentionally annoying character is a stereotypical choice for a survival movie), it mixes everything in a quality way. The wolves were almost exclusively CGI and pretty well done. The sophisticated Neeson character was also moving throughout the movie. Just an excellent movie.
