non-toho kaiju movies discussion

Postby starscream82 » Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:09 am

which ones have you enjoyed? which ones have you hated?

I wish the surface series had lasted more then one season.

I loved dragon war (d-war), that movie was just too ridiculous to not enjoy!

cloverfield was pretty cool, but i hated the look of the monster itself.

im pretty excited to check out the new movie skyline, trailers for it seem to show kaiju-type monsters.

and has anyone ever heard of a movie called monsters coming out?

I think you want to rename this to daikaiju as what you're probably aiming for is the giant monster crowd, NOT the regularly sized monster crowd. :P

King Kong, Win on many many levels and I REALLY wish someone would find those old lost Japanese versions of Kong that PREDATE GODZILLA! D:

Gorgo I feel is an underrated Daikaiju and wish he would of gotten some more love. Hell, let Toho buy the rights and let them do some films.

King Kong: Decent movie, though once Skull Island comes and goes, my interest drops a tad.

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms: Very good movie, and the grandfather of atomic age of monsters.

It Came from Beneath The Sea: Ehhh... It's a bit bland to me, and it seems to take forever to get to the attack on San Francisco, and the method used to take out the 'Hextopus' is a bit of a let down, and a bit of a wall banger.

The Giant Behemoth: It's okay. The actors are believable, and the monster itself is rather cool. The repeated shots are a tad bit of a distracting nuisance, though.

Gorgo: I love this movie! Sure, every one of our main characters are asses, but it's not everyday you see convincing destruction of a city outside of one of Toho's films, as well as convincing panic.

Reptilicus: To date, the only Danish monster in existance. I personally like this movie due to nostalgia.

Gamera, The Giant Monster: Silly?... Yes. Fun? YES.

Yongary, Monster from The Deep: Personally, I love this movie out of sheer nostalgia. Yeah, it's hokey, but I grew up on this movie.

D-War: Was it stupid? Yes, but then again were we expecting anything different when it came to this movie? That's why I like it. Stupid, nonsensical fun.

Cloverfield: In terms of giant monster movies it was original, and IMO it was a good movie.
Today, at the edge of our hope...

At the end of our time, we have chosen to believe in each other.

Today we face the monsters that are at our door.

TODAY WE ARE CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE!

I love King Kong, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (I always want to say "... from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"), The Giant Behemoth, Gorgo, and the Gamera movies. I liked Dragon Wars: D-Wars (because both are necessary), Cloverfield, and Reptilian/Yonggary.

By kaiju movies you mean Japanese giant monsters, not international ones (I assume). No order, these are my favorites:

The Daimajin trilogy
Gamera vs. Barugon
Gamera vs. Gyaos
Gamera: The Brave
Monster X Strikes Back (Guilala sequel)
Ultra Galaxy Legends: The Movie
Ultraman Cosmos: First Contact
Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey
Ultraman Tiga and Ultraman Dyna: Warriors of The Starlight
The Six Ultra Brothers vs. The Monster Army
Grendizer, Getter Robo G, Great Mazinger: Monster of The Ocean Floor
Mazinger Z vs. The Great General of Darkness (anime version of Destroy All Monsters for the win!)
Mazinkaiser vs. The Great General of Darkness

Just random thoughts at work here, so bear with me.

Gamera series - Second only to the other Big G!

Daimajin trilogy - Really well done and worth a look for any monster movie fan.

The Magic Serpent - Now this is a real ninja movie! Floating heads and all.

Legend of Dinosaurs & Monster Birds - Very '70s and kind of a Jaws ripoff, but so weird you'll like it.

Nezulla - Not really a giant monster and not really a good movie, but I liked it for some reason. You could tell the director had a lot of passion for it.

Negadon - I can't wait for that feature length one they're working on.

Big Man Japan - I liked it until the out of the blue ending...

Monster X Strikes Back - Too much of a parody. I need to see the original. Some company needs to hit us up with a Region 1 release.

Geharha - The Gamera 3 level effects were very nice but I'd like to see more serious kaiju stuff than homages that wink at the audience.
RIP Ray Harryhausen
