Logan (2017)

That is all.
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

Recently I've been going on a movie-watching crusade, and I've ranked them. Here they are, all 3 of them (no Godzilla movies allowed! Until I've watched them again).

1. For a Few Dollars More (1965) - Spectacular Western with Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef. Nothing else needs to be said.

2. Blues Brothers (1980) - Great wacky comedy movie, featuring two comedic geniuses. Has some awesome cameos in it too, one of them being my favorite singer of all time.

3. Split (2017) - Nice tense movie. Good acting in this one, otherwise nothing too special about it.

I think the next movie I'm going to watch will be The Shinning, we'll see how it ranks among these.

I jest. In all seriousness, The Shining is an excellent horror film, sadly a HORRIBLE book adaptation though.

This'll doubtlessly change over time (look at my above post, it has already), but why not do that voodoo that I do: specify!

First off.
Spoiler:
You've heard me blab hither and yon about art on these forums like a diminutive Bill Watterson. For the sake of answering the "why'd you chose that movie?" question (and just 'cause I want to) I'm gonna outline what all that hoopla actually meant. In other words, this is how I determine if a movie (or book even) is art. Keep in mind, all of these have to work together at once.

Originality
This doesn't mean you can't base your story off a book or game or what have you, but if you do either say "we're remaking this in movie form" or do something completely different. But originality comes in different forms:
Story- A new story. Pretty simple. This gets people into theater seats quicker than just about anything else.
Format- Take "Memento" for example. There's been oodles of "seeking revenge against spouse's killer" movies, but the way Memento was told made it original.
Characters- There have been billions - trillions maybe - of people on Earth since Adam and Eve, yet each one has been completely unique. Characters should be the same way. Unique that is.
Display- 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" had some of the best post-Sidney Lumet camera work I've ever seen. Knowing how to aim a camera is crucial.

Complexity
A story needs to be complex but easy to follow without clunky exposition (one should be able to tell what's going on with as little dialogue as possible, even none at all). Complexity in story is tied closely to originality. If a story is A+B=C (I'm looking at you Disney, Marvel, and the recent 007s), it's a popcorn flick regardless of how well it does the things above. If the story twists and turns smoothly (see my plot twist thread post from a wee bit ago), then you have something great.

Story content
A combination of the two above, with the added rule: "nothing superfluous" and "emotion first". Always think: "is there a more emotional or touching way to show this?" This is why I always say for writers to ditch cussing and --- scenes in their stories and try to think of a better way to show anger or the fact two people love each other, though this philosophy can be applied to any kind of scene, including action.

Visuals
Annecy Animated Film Festival is a great place to find examples of this. A unique look is a great asset in visual storytelling for obvious reasons.

10 Favorite Movies

1- Inception
2- 12 Angry Men
3- Grave of the Fireflies
4- Arrival
5- Dark Water (Japanese original)
6- Casablanca
7- Coming Home
8- A Quiet Place
9- Shaolin
10- Mr. Holmes

There are so many great movies, but I'm just going to pick one from each decade:

1920s - The Lodger
1930s - The Mummy
1940s - Double Indemnity
1950s - Touch of Evil
1960s - Psycho
1970s - Alien
1980s - The Empire Strikes Back
1990s- The Shawshank Redemption
2000s - The Dark Knight
2010s - Not sure as no movie has been truly THAT amazing thus far. Maybe The Winter Soldier, maybe Ex Machina, maybe Kubo and the Two Strings, not sure.
