Really? It was obviously so unnatural. I was actually worried that if it was real it would be really bad.

At first I thought she kinda knew he was mentally ill, so I figured she had a vague idea of what she was getting herself into.

Spoiler:
I pretty much took it for granted that the relationship with Sophie was all in his head. He'd already been established as at least somewhat delusional, and those scene - and Phoenix's performance in them - were completely at odds with the tone of the rest of the movie.

I was a little disappointed that they opted to do the flashback montage showing all the scenes with her absent. Her saying "your name is Arthur, right?" had already told us everything we needed to know.

Spoiler:
I knew something bad was going to happen between them. And I did feel that the start of the relationship was somewhat contrived. But I honestly was expecting that to be a failure of the movie rather than a plot point. Especially since various of the Joker backstories in the comics dealt with dead wives or girlfriends, so I guess I went in expecting that to happen.

It seems the movie really managed to pull me into Arthur's shoes.

Althought I agree with Eabaker on the whole unnecessary flashback thing.

I forget if he directly says that, but it's definitely close. Something like,"We live in a society where..."
Or "The society we live in"

If it's meant to be intentionally hilarious it's great. If it's meant unironically as something to be taken seriously....uhh...

That's about how I saw it. She seems confused at first, but decides to go by and cheer him up because she saw that he was mentally ill and depressed. It didn't seem too unnatural to me and just one kind soul trying to help a broken soul......

Even if this was the case, it's bizarro to start a romantic relationship with them.

In the leaked early script
Spoiler:
the interactions do actually happen, but it's clear from her expressions and body language that she's just humoring him out of pity; Arthur later finds out that she had a boyfriend the whole time when he walks in on them having sex. He later confronts her at the playground with her daughter and she outright says that she only went to his show and to dinner afterwards because she had "felt sorry" for him; he tells her daughter that her mother's a whore and rages that "nothing ever comes easy for me" before Sophie slaps him across the face and storms off
This actually seems to have been the biggest alteration from the early draft in the final film; haven't seen the movie yet unfortunately but most everything else seems to have played out fairly similar or identical to how it goes in the leaked script

IMO that's a good alteration. It comes across as shitty guy upset and pissed off a girl that was vaguely nice to them=romantic interest, and that somehow getting angry about that or harassing them is justified.

Agreed. That would have completely killed any pathos the story invokes toward Arthur, and would completely have played into the "incel" element that folks keep insisting is part of the movie anyway.

DC is killing it this year! Its starting to get tired of the MCU and I'm a marvel fan too. It's just the same thing just with different characters each movie to me anymore.

I love that DC is doing what Marvel can't do - R-rated standalone movies. I would LOVE to see a Deathstroke movie or maybe even a R-rated Riddler movie.
Well, Birds of Prey looks like a trainwreck, but Joker was a damn good movie. All the incels can suck it.

It's funny, I don't remember hearing this much outcry about the Saw movies "glorifying/encouraging violence" when THOSE were still trendy, why is it suddenly a problem NOW? :?

Speaking of which, I'm sure you've all heard about the security measures imposed at various theaters because of the movie's controversy. My theater did the same, though they were less conspicuous about it. There were no signs posted at my theater, they just sold tickets at concessions. Yeah, I don't think having to go inside would be much of a deterrent for crazies who will kill somebody because of a MOVIE.
Yeah, Birds of Prey just feels like it's going to be Suicide Squad allover again except with gore. Also, I read early rumors about Wonder Woman 1984...
Spoiler:
Its mixed. It tries to be in tone of the 70's Live- action show. Idk how feel about that.
Also about the controversy on Joker, the media outcry is more disturbing than the movie itself. I'm so glad its breaking records despite the bulls*it.

Despite? I think it's breaking records in large part because of the controversy.

If the theater was a Regal, this is not purely for Joker and is going to become standard practice shortly. According to corporate, it's because they think people are sick of waiting in two separate lines before going to the movie.

I liked how in the script
Spoiler:
Arthur slices his mouth with a broken piece of glass, it would've really set in stone that this guy has lost all of his marbles and realizes nothing in the world matters. I know he realizes that anyway, but it would've been nice seeing some scarring done to him. Kinda like a love note to Heath Ledger, like "this was dedicated to you". Supposedly during the end scene he'd have stitches in his Glasgow smile and I think that would've been the perfect homage.

However the deadpan expressions he had during the Murray interview felt exactly like Joker, and if he had that permanent smile, it would've taken away from his subtle expressions
Maybe they're saving it for a sequel.

Added in 1 day 1 hour 20 minutes 28 seconds:
So supposedly Penguin is getting his own solo film apart from the DCEU, likely part of their DC BLACK label which, if real, also likely includes Joaquin Phoenix's Joker film.

Rumor is, DC is also considering solo films for Two-Face, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Riddler, and Lex Luthor.

https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/dc- ... #gallery-2

I'm pretty stoked for this, if anyone knows Oswald's origin you'd know it's pretty damn tragic, growing up in a rich family but always bullied due to his penguin-like appearance. Depending on the incarnation, his family either embraces his appearance or completely finds him appalling. I think it'd be really cool to get a movie in the psyche of not only someone like Oswald, but each one of Batman's rogues. If I were to pick the next 4 R-rated films after Joker, I'd go Mr. Freeze, Penguin, Riddler and Two-Face.

I really hope that a potential Mr. Freeze film would not be set in the Joker universe. Just sounds so stupid.
