I trust Sony to make the right calls on Villain films. Or at least moreso than Disney.

Sam Raimi eh?

A good choice I may say. I enjoyed Crawl so I can see him deliver this. ^_^

Niiiiice. Hopefully he'll be given full creative control this time like he did Spider-Man 1 and 2. He does great stuff when he's allowed to go unimpeded.

Oh 100%. That is my biggest fear: a repeat of Spider-Man 3 (though I do like 3, its painful to see what greedy Somy exec's did to his vision.)

Sam Raimi is also the director of the Evil Dead movies and as mentioned his involvement in Crawl as an producer.

He'll definitely have the horror experience for Doctor Strange 2 which is suppose to be horror. He's the perfect pick for this film.

I think a case could be made that Marvel is, to use the dictionary definition, "a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content;" and that the Raimi Spider-Man flicks were a key part of its development.

Feige also was apparently strongly involved in the first 2 Raimi films. Wouldn't be surprised if he personally courted Raimi for the job.

I don't think Marvel can properly qualify, it' have to have other series' under the belt.

According to what definition of "genre"?

Nevermind, i'm wrong. :P

Still don't think anyone's gonna call it a genre.

Certainly not my own.

I wouldn't call the Gamera series "Tohos" despite their similarities to the Godzilla franchise by that company. Marvel films have their own "Marvel style" but they would fall under the umbrella of "superhero movies" as a genre much in the same way Godzilla and company are categorized as "kaiju movies".

"Genre" is a pretty ambiguous term that can be widened or narrowed in scope depending on the needs of the conversation. I think in discussing superhero movies, it could be very useful to define a set of specific tonal choices and tropes which allow a range of Marvel-based movies (not just the Marvel Studios movies, but also certain other Marvel adaptations from both before and after the commencement of the MCU) to be read as a constituting unique sub-genre.
