My friend Keith saw it the other day.

He told me that he thought it was better then the Carpenter film.

I let him have his moment

It's obviously not, but at least it's not as boring as the Carpenter film.

To each his own, I suppose.

If somebody is not one for atmospheric horror films, then Carpenter's THE THING, along with a plethora of classic horror flicks are not going to be their cup of tea.

Holy skreeonk shit... Captain, Broken Base off the starboard bow! And it be a mean one!

Seriously though, I love both movies equally. When I watch one, I'm gonna be watching the other immedietly after. I honestly don't give a skreeonk about the spfx-whiplash. I honestly don't skreeonk care that the prelude is seemingly a rehash of the 82 film (the skreeonk were you guys honestly expecting? The Thing to wear a top-hat and monacle, and dance while singing that Michigan J. Frog song?). And the suspense is there, provided you don't watch the trailers for the movie (cause trailers do indeed spoil everything these days. And for the record I conducted this test on my dad: he guessed who was an imitation wrong each time).

You guys can continue squabbling over which was better or more boring (... wait, boring? The skreeonk? Must be a sign of the times), but for me, both films hold (and will continue to hold) an equal position in my heart.

Liking both films "a lot" doesn't suddenly make them on par with each other, quality wise.

I don't think either film is boring (I mean, you could say that about any film after repeated viewings), but I do think the prequel is definitely not the better film. That's all I'll say on the matter.

Carpenter's film does no bore me. None of his early films do. On the other hand, the prequel/rehash has a very boring "been there, done that" vibe to it. It's also less gory by comparsion.

I agree. I sat down to watch this movie and I didn't really like it TBH. I went in with very low expectations and somehow was still disappointed. The creature is NOT a screaming CGI monstrosity. It is a stealthy, cunning beast that only attacks when alone with another person or when cornered. It's an organism with strong, selfish survival instincts. So why was it actively hunting people? Seriously. The atmosphere was just... off. The CGI was meh. The characters were okay, and perhaps one of the few positives.

BTW, did anyone feel like this didn't take place in the 80s? Playing 80s songs doesn't automatically set an 80s tone.

I like them both, but I do know that the Carpenter one is the better one.

I think thats because it had never experienced any type of interaction with humans before. Later in the Carpenter film, in knew that it should change its way of doing things because of preveous experiences with humans. Thats just my thought on it anyways.

I love how you guys over Practical effects vs CGI.

Be it a big condom-latex tentacle or a bunch of pixels, it still isn't real. Being either or doesn't make it any more or less real.

The bunch of pixels look fake. And my main gripe was was with how they made the beastie act.

There's no denying that the special effects of Carpenter's film are much better than the effects in the Prequel.

Personally, I would rate The Thing(1982) an 8/10 while I would give the Prequel about a 5/10.

I've picked apart Carpenter's film every time I've watched it.

The special effects, in my view, are on par.

Yes, yes. I see very good examples of CGI and practical effects with their inherent flaws in both examples.

As long as the CG looks better then practical effects there should be no problem. I genuinely don't like CGI unless it's Jurassic Park/Avatar good. What irks me is the JP was made 18 years ago and it's effects are still better then most films today.
