What is bad, is these freaking people who weld these shitty nostalgia goggles to their heads, and claim that the 82 movie was one of the best things ever. It wasn't. I could point out plot holes in this movie, as well as glaringly obvious ones in 82. People just like to hate things because they're new.

I don't think the movie being new is the reason why people think the 2011 Thing movie sucks? People think the John Carpenter is much better because the characters are much better, the use practical effects are better, the suspense is much better and the atmosphere with a strong sense of tension using creepy music is much better. It's not that hard to comprehend.

Edit: The original Comic Con trailer is now in HD BTW

Hellspawn just broke it down for you, since the film's quality obviously went over your head.

THE THING '82 is one of the best sci-fi/horror films made in the past 30 years. Period.

I don't dislike THE THING '11 because it's new. I dislike it because it sucked ass. Is that a good enough reason?

No. No he didn't. Practical effects is obvious crap that everyone mentions.

No. Explain why it sucked now?

Both movies are solidly mediocre. But on a scale of mediocrety, the one from the 80s is an 8 and the one from this year is a 3. Technically both are meh, but if I were to watch one, I'd rather it be the Carpenter one.

But I'd opt for the one from the 50s over both.

I mention that the John Carpenter version had better suspense, the atmosphere and you care for the characters unlike in the prequel. Everything about the sense of the dark, sinister, desolate surroundings is gone in the 2011 movie. I take it that you didn't read over that part?

Mitchal wrote:No. Explain why it sucked now?

Maybe the 2011 movie had dull characters, no unique and chilling atmosphere, everything feel flat and predictable. You sound like that you think that people enjoy John's Carpenter movie because nostalgia and it's old (Which I find silly because that would be like saying people enjoy the Showa Godzilla movies more than the Heisei series because nostalgia or people hated the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still because it's new) which is wrong.

John Carpenter's Thing is viewed as a good sci-fi/horror film and is a cult classic. Even the critics would agree.

Maybe the 2011 movie had dull characters,

And the original had interesting characters? The only thing that made MacReady interesting was that he was Kurt F-ing Russel. That's about it.

no unique and chilling atmosphere, everything feel flat and predictable.

It wasn't nearly as thick as 82, but the new one did had atmosphere.

No. The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) sucked because it sucked. Nothing more.

John Carpenter's Thing is viewed as a good sci-fi/horror film and is a cult classic.

I don't care what it's viewed as. I'm looking at it as a film. Not a "cult classic" or "cinematic masterpiece" or whatever you want to call it.

Meh, the 82 version wasn't that great, the only reason I enjoy it so much is because of the great special effects, but aside from that, the oldest of all versions takes the cake, haven't seen the new one but plan on doing so just because of Mary Elizabeth!

I watched this tonight and must say I was dissapointed with it. Some things where cool but for the most part it seemed like a rehash of John Carpenter's version. Now I'm kind of upset I spent my Vudu credit on this.

The special effects where magnificent, however the film jumped waay too fast into the action. The ending was disappointing as well, I was hoping for the hulking monster-like Thing from the end of John Carpenter's.

All in all I give it a 5/10

I'm curious. Is there anything extra you can do with the Thing?

I thought the CGI was awful, but I agree with your rating.

In certain scenes it looked overhwelmingly bad, otherwise it was pretty solid.

Some of the effects where okay but they did look really bad for the most part. I seen PS3/360 games with better looking effects in their intros.

I do have my own opinion on films, I used Rotten Tomatoes as a example since they are often good examples for critical reviews. If movie is a very received film then it's consider to be a good film (Like Alien, 2001 and many other films in history).

So, I just watched The Thing today for the first time(I know i'm a little late). To me, the film seemed like it was a bit too rushed. There's little to no suspense at all and the CGI was somewhat bad in certain parts of the film but not all of them. The only part that I could tell that the practical effects were used is when Juliette started to transform. The soundtrack was okay, the use of the violins were an excellent choice especially the violin solo near the ending, but the overall music sounds like it could fit in a Tim Burton film. Also there's a part of this soundtrack that sounds like a part of the ending of Jerry Goldsmith's STMP Klingon Battle theme. I'm curious about the 2 cliffhangers in the film, the obvious one is did Kate reach the Russian base and the other cliffhanger is what ever happened to the 2 Things in the helicopter because if 2 humans survived the crash, then i'm pretty sure those Things could've survived also.

My friend Keith saw it the other day.

He told me that he thought it was better then the Carpenter film.

I let him have his moment

It's obviously not, but at least it's not as boring as the Carpenter film.
