I'm pretty sure there's basically zero debate on whether or not stealing intellectual property should be illegal or not.

There's zero debate when evidence is presented. Most of the time, people that argue against have faulty opinions.

I think there's a debate on how the government and companies should handle piracy and the punishments.
But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks

Oh, there is. The concept of intellectual property and who really benefits from monopolizing profits on said property are debated, but of course not in mainstream media. This applies less to movies, music, and such, but the debate is there, especially when innovations funded by public money are turned into products for profit in the private sector.

I saw that the other day. I do wish that the media really needs to stop calling them zombie attacks. I noticed that other news stories would slap "Zombie" in the headline to cash in on another story and it makes people really stupid enough to believe it's a sign of a zombie outbreak. Cracked.com sums up it nicely in my opinion.

You toss words like "monopolizing" around like you know what they mean, and they have no bearing on anything relating to IP. Who benefits from owning IP? The person who owns it. That's a no-brainer, and it's why copyright laws exist. If I bust my ass and spend a lot of time (ie. capital) on a piece of artistic merchandise, I'd really like to be the one who sees the bulk of the profits, not spam ads on download sites or bootleggers in the streets. If I can't earn a living doing what I do for a living, then what's the point of doing it at all?

This applies less to movies, music, and such, but the debate is there, especially when innovations funded by public money are turned into products for profit in the private sector.

That's a good one.

It's funny that you think artists get the "bulk of the profits." It's also funny you think no innovation is funded by the public. You're quite mistaken on both counts, but given your condescending response to my benign correction of your misinformation re: intellectual property discourse, I don't think I'm going to bother explaining any further. I'm just letting you know there's a much more diverse array of opinions on that matter than you imagine.

When did I say anything about artists? People who call themselves "artists" tend to make nothing, because they're bad at business. Hence having to call themselves "artists" (which most of them aren't even good at anyway).

Keep in mind, however, that IP laws also protect a less financially robust individual. Without IP laws, I, the little guy, would just get edged out on every good idea by a larger corporation with the assets availible to duplicate my product much more efficiently than I. It works both ways.

It's also funny you think no innovation is funded by the public.

That's you infering. Some innovative things have come about from public funding, but the vast majority has not. It's statistically inconsequential to any argument. Where the money comes from is irrelevent anyway. Public funds, like private funds, aren't necessitated to one minutely specific use. No one forces a government organization, let's say, to give money to a research foundation (which, more often than not, is a private corporation). It's no different than a donation by a private investor except that it's pooled from taxpayer money.

correction

...But that would have required you to, you know, correct things. And not just writing a sentence that ammounts no "Nuh-uh!"

When did you mention artists?

If I bust my ass and spend a lot of time (ie. capital) on a piece of artistic merchandise, I'd really like to be the one who sees the bulk of the profits,

A person who works on a piece of artistic merchandise is an artist, wouldn't you say?

And I'm not inferring anything. You were being broadly dismissive; in quoting and bolding the phrase "innovations funded by public money" and replying with, "That's a good one  " you certainly seemed to scoff at the very notion. Be clearer next time if that's not what you meant.

Again, I'm not interested in a pointless debate with you over this. I haven't even expressed my view on the subject. I merely meant to inform you that, contrary to your opinion, a wider array of opinions on this topic exists. There is debate.

I'm sorry this correction rustled your jimmies. It wasn't intended to provoke an argument.
