I read that as Machismosaurus, and wondered exactly what would prompt someone to give it a name like that.

Still, a great find to be sure!

So, you've probably heard by now, but last month a new and as-yet unnamed titanosaur was discovered and mounted at the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City, US. The find consisted of seven skeletons, amounting to approx. 150 bones in total, which are evidently in good condition.

Image

The estimates based on the mounted specimen place it at 37-40 metres in length, and 70 tonnes in life, which would make it equivalent in mass to the estimates for Argentinosaurus, and somewhat longer. The more intact specimen does mean that this is probably the largest confirmed dinosaur that we know of, as well as the largest land animal on record.

Apparently, there's a documentary about it that was released in the UK, featuring David Attenborough.

Maybe someone can find it online?

Also, Mark Witton recently posted a revised look at Deinosuchus

A revised and reduced average length of 8-10 metres, massive osteoderms, and regional differences. All neat little tidbits.
The art he accompanied the article with is pretty cool, to boot.

We gotta kick some more life into this thread. So, what have been some of the worst shrink-wrapped dinosaur reconstructions you have seen?

Remember those preserved Cave Lion cubs discovered a few months back? Well someone wants to use them in a cloning experiment.

For those of you who like dinosaur toys (like me): NECA sculptor David Silva has been in the process of creating a new series of articulated dino figures, starting with a set of deinonychosaurs like Velociraptor. He's made a lot of progress, as you can see in the images/link below. I believe the Kickstarter for these should be going up in a month or two, with the intended price range for these figures being $30-40.

I'm pleased to see the Tully Monster in the news again.

Another "raptor", named Boreonykus, was announced from Alberta the other day.

Oh, and here's a video of the Velociraptor figure being put together. More details at the beginning & end of the video.

The complete figure:

There is now a possibility that T-rex had lips covering its teeth.

Researchers announced they have discovered a ferocious meat-eating dinosaur in Argentina, notable for having short arms like the T-rex but hailing from a different branch of the family tree.

The Gualicho shinyae -- nicknamed Gualicho -- is a theropod, a two-legged, bird-like dinosaur. It stretched an imposing six meters (nearly 20 feet) from head to toe, and weighed an estimated 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds).

It roughly resembles the Tyrannosaurus rex but Gualicho, found in the north of Argentina's Patagonia region, was not a close relative of the king of dinosaurs.

Its stubby limbs evolved independently and not from a shared, short-armed ancestor -- a clue that may help researchers better understand how the extinct animals evolved.

"This is a completely different lineage. We just froze up when we realized it," Sebastian Apesteguia, a researcher at Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council told a briefing in Buenos Aires.

Its only known ancestor is the Deltadromeus, a leggy, carnivorous dinosaur with slender arms found in Niger.
