Marmit Monster Heaven Appreciation Thread

Postby ebirahsmeg1 » Sat May 12, 2012 7:31 am

Hello fellow collectors:

I thought this might be an interesting topic to discuss one of the more intriguing, and best (while at the same time it can also be one of the most frustrating) Godzilla toylines out there....Marmit's Monster Heaven line.

Personally, I love this line. It's combines both stylized charm and amazing accuracy at the same time . In addition, the MH line has an outstanding selection/different variety of kaiju to choose from, and both these attributes set it apart from all the rest. Live most novice collectors, I was initially of the "Bandai only/everything not Bandai sucks" mold back in the 90s/early 2000s. Also, I had only come across Marmit's early Vinyl Paradise line, which I did not care for *at all*, so I always dismissed them. However, I had grown extremely frustrated by Bandai's limited selection/lack of variety of kaiju to choose from in their lines (and sadly, this is still as relevant as ever with Bandai today). Then I was introduced by Legion and other collectors photos of various MH figures, particularly the amazing MH Gigan figure, and that pretty much motivated me to take the plunge, and my wallet and I haven't looked back since

At last, kaiju that Bandai would never touch with their 8 inch line (notice I said *8* inch line) were finally in my grasp, such as Varan, Showa MG, Titanosaurus, the majority of showa Godzilla suits, majority of GFW characters, Ebirah, flying Hedorah, Rose stage Biollante, etc. etc.). In addition, they also covered nearlly all of same figures as Bandai's 8 inch line, and more often than not, the Marmit versions were superior than their Bandai counterparts (Gigan, Showa Rodan, Battra Larva, 68 Angilas, Megalon, King Ceasar, G2K, Orga, Destroyah, Biollante, etc. are just a few off the top of my head at the moment). From 2002-2007, this line was in fine form and other than a few occasional misses (I'm talking to you, MH Space G X_X ) , it was consistent in its quality and excitement, and the future always looked bright with this line.

Nevertheless, it's my opinion that things started to take a turn for the worse in 2008. It seemed that either A) Marmit hired new sculptors (I'm not the only one with this opinion) or B) decided to take a different stylistic direction and began focusing mostly on Heisei Godzilla and Millennum suits. Now, focusing on Heisei and Millennium G figures is all fine and dandy...except for the fact that most of them sucked...and I mean SUCKED ROYALLY (many of them look more suitable for their VP than the Monster Heaven). Their G93 Rado-Goji and G91 Ghido-Goji figures in particular are the reason internet "puke" emoticons exist...just dreadful. Also, Marmit started the rather baffling habit of leaving some of the mouths of these figures uncarved with a solid piece of vinyl...it looks cheap, lazy, and flat out terrible (GMK Goji, Rado-Goji). Sure, Marmit has managed to hit a few some home runs with their G figure post 2008, such as their G95-Desu Goji (a great figure, but I'm not as infatuated with it as most are...I find it a tad bit overrated and like Hedorah, there are just way too many figures of this damn suit out there now) and their G2K figure (probably their best G figure post 2008), but to say their aforementioned heisei G figures along with their Millennium figures (sans G2K Goji) have been "lackluster" would be an understatement and perhaps too kind.

Also, Marmit's G-related output overall has tailed off dramatically. There were practically no new sculpts/releases in 2011 (and only 3 in 2010). It truly is a shame, as their most recent Orga figure proves that they are still capable of making some of the best, most exciting figures out there. Thankfully, I have been able to fill in the gaps of any short-comings from both Marmit and Bandai with the likes of Gigabrain, Marusan, and even Xplus...I'm all about my rag-tag collection :D , and nearly all of my recent Marmit MH purchases have been mostly pre-2008 figures that I missed out on and have been on my wish list for awhile.ease post pics as well!

However, MH Orga gives me some hope than one day that MH line will return to its former glory days pre-2008. If not, then at least there's always Gigabrain  :)

Anyways, what are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with my assessment?

  • Oh yeah, and what are your favorite/least favorite MH figures?
  • What would you like to see Marmit do in the future for the MH line?
  • How did you get started/introduced to the MH line?
  • [What MH figures do you own in your collection? Pl[/list]

Look forward to (hopefully) hearing some interesting thoughts/perspectives, and I'll post my own thoughts on the above list of topics as well...

Don't own any marmits due to the ridiculous prices around here in Singapore, but quite abit of what I have seen is cool.

Oh yeah, and what are your favorite/least favorite MH figures?

Favorite: Closed-mouth Desu-Goji (the open-mouth one looks like its yawning), G2K, Gigan, '68 Anguirus Small Biollante, 73 and 71 Gojis, Titanosaurus
Least favorite: King Caesar (both), Spacegodzilla, 91/93 Godzillas, and some of the Kiryus look quite awful
Okay, but underwhlming: Kingoji, King Ghidorah (in terms of stylistic versions, I think the CCP and Gigabrain FAR superior)

What would you like to see Marmit do in the future for the MH line?

Updated Spacegodzilla, updated Baragon, updated Ceasar. And a Megaguirus

Love Monster Heaven (obviously), but I must point out that many of my favorite releases were millennium series monsters. Kiryu version 1, G2K, and my recently-purchased Orga are essentially my three favorites from the line. While many studios (GigaBrain) have done excellent sculpts of, say, Gigan and the Showa Godzilla suits, I don't anyone has approached the latest era of Toho Kaiju with the lovely blend of realism and stylization that MH has. And, truthfully, Marmit has essentially hit the perfect blend of those elements for me. These figures are nowhere near film-accurate in a clinical, go-over-with-a-microscope level, but they feel accurate. A little bit of design tweaking is forgivable when it is done in the service of capturing the personality of the monsters depicted. Sure Bandai's Orgas are pretty-near the suit's aesthetics (ignoring that seam), but when you look at them they seem sort of...lifeless. There's not a lot of feeling to turn a hunk of vinyl into something more. Compare that to the Marmit, with its chromatic sheen and nasty little blood-red sneer, and you'll quickly see what I'm getting at.

To be fair, a really good sculptor can make a hyper-accurate, realistic sculpt that still effectively captures the spirit of the characters. Albeit that takes alot of skill and experience.

- Oh yeah, and what are your favorite/least favorite MH figures?
- What would you like to see Marmit do in the future for the MH line?
- How did you get started/introduced to the MH line?
- What MH figures do you own in your collection? Please post pics as well!

My thoughts on the above:

- Favorite MH figures (this is extremely difficult) are G67/68, Showa Rodan, 68 Angilas, Giant Biollante, Showa Gigan, Varan, Manda, and Orga.

- I would like to see the following figures in the Marmit line:

  • GABARA
  • Heisei Mogera
  • Showa Kumonga
  • Showa Kamakiras (the Parababy figures were outstanding...would love to see them get the MH treatment)
  • Sanda
  • Gaira
  • Magma
  • Battra Adult
  • Showa Manda
  • Rodan 64 (GTTHM) and Rodan 65/68
  • Space Godzilla (this figure needs to be redone. A *GOOD* MH SG would be amazing...not sure what the sculptors were smoking when they were creating that monstrosity)
  • Fake/Disguised Godzilla(GvsMG74)
  • Matango
  • GFW King Ceasar
  • Keizer Ghidorah
  • Frankenstein
  • Super MechaGodzilla
  • Godzillasaurus
  • Godzilla Junior
  • GMK Baragon
  • GMK Mothra
  • Millennium (Pre-Orga stage)
  • Destroyer Flying Stage
  • Black Moth
  • More burning G and Kiryu figures....just kidding :P

- First MH figure I ever bought was the Black Gallary Gigan...can't start off any better than that 8-)

- I own the following MH figures:

Gigan (Regular and black gallery variant)
  • Varan (Pink and black gallery variant)
  • Titanosaurus
  • Megalon (Green/purple variant)
  • MG 74
  • MG 75
  • Giant Hedorah
  • Regular Hedorah
  • Flying Hedorah
  • Angilas 68
  • King Ceasar
  • Rodan 56
  • GFW Ebirah
  • GFW Manda
  • GFW Angilas
  • GFW Gigan
  • GFW Hedorah
  • GFW Kumonga
  • GFW Kamakuras
  • GFW Rodan
  • MG 2002 w/ Battle Pack
  • MG 2003 Battle Damaged
  • G89 (1st version)
  • G54 (Slime green variant )
  • G55 (Green)
  • G67 (Metallic variant)
  • G68 (Brown variant)
  • G71 (Brown/Green variant)
  • G73 (Blue Glitter variant)
  • Giant Biollante (Dark Green Variant)
  • Rose Biollante (Pink/blue variant)
  • Regular Biollante (Blue)
  • Orga
  • Destroyah
  • Battra Larva
  • G2K (the blue-ish/multi-colored glitter/whatever the hell you'd call it variant...beautiful color scheme)

Too many pics of my MH figures to count, so I'll just post my most recent MH purchases from that last year or so:

Currently, my future wish list includes:
  • Gonad-Goji 71
  • Gira-Goji
  • GFW Gigan (I pretty much have most of the GFW characters...might as well round it off with him).

Honestly, once I have hunted down the above 3, I think I'm pretty much done collecting MH figures until Marmit starts releasing some new sculpts...

I was referring to their millennium "Godzilla" figures, specfically their G2002 and G2004 figures (Though I did make a mistake in that both were made prior Marmit's turn for the worse 2008-present). Of course, I listed the G2K and Orga figures as exceptions to the rule as both were great figures.

EXACTLY. Which was what Marmit did to near perfection...until 2008-present. -_-

MA SG set the bar awfully high, like what Gigabrain did with KG. Marmit's going to have tough job beating 'em with that particular kaiju.

Thing is, Marmit figures and Bandai toys really shouldn't be compared like that. The MA Space Godzilla goes for absolute perfect film accuracy mixed with shitloads of articulation. Any new Marmit Space Godzilla, meanwhile, would be mixing stylization with accuracy with traditional execution and articulation. The lines aren't in competition with each other and neither are looking to "beat" each other. They can both be 100% terrific on their own without being compared with each other.

True. In any case, I'm hoping for a great stylized SG- he's a character that screams for one.

Its a pity marmits are so overpriced around these parts. You won;t find any going for less than $80...which wouldn;t be so bad if all of those from the Godzila series didn't go at above $200.

I appreciate the Marmit Monster Heaven series for all the obscure characters that no (or few) other label(s) have managed to do so far and a few of the sculpts are indeed very nice. But as I'm a sucker for realistic paint and sculpts I never could justify the prices of these things. So so far I decided to stick with BANDAI figures only, but I love to look at the all their toys and collection pics which the others of you have gathered!

Love this line, but it tends to run on the expensive side so I can only get one here and there. There are a ton more I'd like to own. Both Biollantes and the Kingoji are high on my wish list.

That said, here are ones I have now.

They're usually far cheaper than the "realistic" Xplus figures you prefer. However, ebay dirtbag dealers such as what_a_day from Singapore have falsely inflated the prices of these things.

Agreed, they're two completely different kinds of figures, and all this comparing between the two is a little silly (this is also happening in the Gigabrain thread as well). Yes, the SH SMG is nice...but it's also tiny...for collectors like myself who prefer to 8-9 inch scale, a 8-9 inch SMG figure would hold alot of appeal.

By the way Legion, what's your favorite MH figure....I'm going to guess Gigan? :huge:

Nice pics Jomei! The Biollante figures are great...here are the ones I own:

Not a big fan of the MH G62 figure though...if I were you, I'd go with the Gigabrain.

I only own two Marmits, the Vinyl Paradise Godzilla '54, and Monster Heaven Godzilla 2003.

The Monster Heaven Godzilla '03 is a neat figure, but I can't see myself continuing to collect Marmits. While they're cool, I just prefer more movie accurate figures a lot more.

I'm getting a Gigabrain '62. :] I'm a big 'Kingoji fan, though, so I want both.

And yeah, ebirahs, I want the Biollante you have with the pearl/whitish vinyl. I think I want the other Rose variant more, but I suppose I'd get whichever I could find at a good price.

ugh...

Marmits. I like some of them. Actually, now that I've been looking around a bit more, I've seen some great ones. I like the FW Rodan over the Bandai one, the Orga is a nice take and is almost as cool as the Bandai one, and that giant Hedorah is kinda neat! I'd like to see some Marmit Ghidorahs. Not Showa ones, mind you, but the likes of a GMK one would be pretty wicked!

Yes they are. And I said in my post that you're referring to, that I'll stick with BANDAI only. So yes, X-Plus is possibly the most realistic figure line out there and one of the most expensive, but even more than Marmit out of my price range which I can justify blowing on a figure - especially when it's usual prices for most of these things. Although they are more of statues than toys and I prefer toys. Moveable toys. Still, everybody, enjoy your Marmits! 8-)
