G-Force/G-Fan Magazine

Postby o.supreme » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:02 am

Greetings All,

I know there have been threads about this magazine previously, but the *iffy" search system on this site comes yup with no results.... So If someone else can find one I apologize in advance.

Anyway. I have been an on/off subscriber since 1994 (issue #13 was the first one I found). I was recently able to find issues 9-12 on eBay surprisingly cheap. So now I would like to complete my collection by finding those now rare G-Force issues #1-#8.

I know many people have critisized the Magazine since going from a 6 issue annual publication to only 4 issues per year, also since the Internet now seems to provide news, articles etc... faster than any magazine could. I still like it for what it is, and continue to support it as it is the only english publication in existence that I know of form devoted to Godzilla and the like from the original half dozen or so that spawned in the early 90's.

The anthology-style reprints are still a great option if you're just after the info. I haven't seen the early newsletters come up for sale from anybody in years.

I have every issue of G-fan from the last 4-5 years. I have bought a few back issues as well.

I submitted art, and articles to JD, none of which was ever submitted. Even though I got a response from him one day saying he recieved my art and was going to include it.

I submitted a story, didn't hear a single word from him for six months, and I just assumed he wasn't going to use it. Then one day, I opened up my new issue and saw my name in the table of contents. Guess Mr. Lees isn't very big on communication.

Back when I first started reading, I submitted multiple letters (snail mail letters), and articles, all of which eventually appeared in G-Fan. I did a very early article summarazing all the Godzilla Video Games that I knew existed (probably sometime in 1998 or 1999). I'm sure with the prevalence of the internet he gets so many e-mails, information, and Fan art, its more difficult to sort out. I hope I see all of your contributions in some future issue. I'm sure there is enough fan art on Deviant art alone to fill 10 issues of G-Fan at roughly 80 pages each , that 2 1/2 years alone of just fan art! I'd say each issue typically features probably about 5-10 pieces of fan art, including young kids drawings with crayons, gotta love those :). Its probably the main reason the Magazine has been able to keep circulation for almost 18 years, considering about half of that time there has been no new Godzilla or Kaiju movies to speak of.

I stopped reading G-Fan after Tristar's GODZILLA came out. The articles didnt interest me and printing fan-fiction to me is a nail in the coffin for any magazine.

I normally would agonize over buying G-Fan of Protoculture Addicts. Most times PA won.

I only ever saw/purchased one issue of PA. I cant rememebr which issue#, but it had UFO Robo Grendizer on the Front and had awesome articles on Super Robots which I still refer to from time to time. Either my local shop dosen't carry this anymore, or I just didn't notice... I'll have to inquire next time I go.

PA hasnt been printed in over 4 years. It's basically defunct with the internet putting out information like mad.

I still and will always prefer holding a physical copy of something over reading about it on a screen. Just has that special feeling ya know?

Agreed. I only have 2 classic issues my dad handed down to me of Famous Monsters of Filmland from the 1960's, but the smell of those magazines alone brings back feelings of nostalgia. Heck I still buy Books also and will probably be the last person on the planet to purchase a tablet of anykind.

Seconded. Not to sound too literal, but it feels more "solid".

Having to turn on the computer, log into the net, open a site, etc... it's just not as relaxing as kicking back and opening a book or mag.

Matt Frank will be doing the cover for the upcoming 100th issue of G-fan magazine. He has released a WIP shot of the cover.

G-Fan was great in the 90's. Issue #15 was my first, and I (very) quickly subscribed after that. I actually had J.D. Lee's sign my original issue at my first G-fest a few years back.

I've subscribed on and off over the past 6 years or so, and the quality of the magazine can definitely be hit or miss these days. There have been some really good issue in the recent past, however. The issue dedicated to the 35th anniversary of TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA from a couple years back was phenomenal.

Yeah, as of recent, G-Fan is pretty meh altogether. I still find something interesting to read in every issue though. And I still drool over the new toys at the end of every issue.

Cant wait to see a more clear version of the Godzilla (I'm assuming Front cover) pic. Yes I've been an on/off subscriber since 1995, but I've managed to pick up every issue along the way (except for the earliest ones that I mentioend to start this thread)
