Monster Toy Spotlight #37 - Toho King Kong (1962 / 1967)

Post by AWMGodzilla62 »

I was inspired to do Toho Kong for this week's Monster Spotlight from my recent pick-up. This is earliest Toho Kong vinyl out there, released by Marusan for King Kong Escapes in 1967. He was hidden under the name "Giant Gorilla" for copyright reason, but it was obviously meant to be Kong, especially since Gorosaurus was also released by Marusan at the same time. He's a rare figure to find in general, but I was exceptionally lucky to find him mint in bag!

Holy cow! I've never even seen the bagged Giant Gorilla before. That's got to be beyond rare. Nice score!

I don't own any Toho Kong figures unfortunately, only the McFarlane one.
However, I DO remember having a rubber gorilla from a little shop, and that was my Kong for many years. We could even fit little plastic people from my dad's train set into its hands. I honestly wish I knew what happened to it because it actually kind of looked like the Toho Kong, but I didn't do a very good job of keeping it safe. He became a tub toy at some point, and disappeared not long after that.

Thanks! I was extremely lucky to get that bagged Giant Gorilla.

I feel like you aren't the only one without a Toho Kong. I feel like I picked a dud topic choice for the Monster Spotlight. I thought for sure there would be some Bandai Kongs posted, Y-MSF Gorillas, Apes Japan, the Marusan reproductions of Giant Gorilla, etc.

Speaking of Apes Japan, this was a commissioned repaint of the Apes Japan 1962 King Kong and the Marmit Godzilla 1962.

Nonsense, Alex! Kong is a great choice. In fact, here's my Y-MSF King Kong 1962:

I love how perfectly he fits with Bandai's 6" Kingoji in pretty much every way.

Didn't Y-MSF make a Kong 67 figure as well?

Online review if a Kong figure that I'm very surprised has been left out thus far:

Bandai 8 inch King Kong
GIANT CONDOR!!!!!!!!

^ Yes, the first APES release: K'67 on the right, and K'62 on the left.

Is X-Plus unable to do Toho Kong?
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

it's probably a rights issue X-plus doesn't want to get into too
