Monster Toy Spotlight #24: Godzilla 1998/Zilla

Post by MoarCrossovers »

C'mon, you all know this one would come eventually.

I do actually have a G'98 figure, but I'll have to post a picture later as I'm kinda in a rush at the moment. In the meantime, why don't you guys show off yours.

Here's two reviews I've done:

And some pictures of my other Trendmasters Godzilla 1998 figures, including the two rarest. Ultimate and Supreme!

No idea who made this. I got it from a car boot sale many, many years ago.

It's been a while since any have been made. eBay is your primary source. Trendmasters made most of the figures for this movie so if you're in the US it's actually easier to find most of them than if you were in Japan.

They need to find a way to reissue this or make another version. The sculpt on Zilla looks really good.

It's too bad there was never a Bandai vinyl, not even for Final Wars. Would make for a really unique figure among the other, more 'usual' Godzillas.

Anybody have the Living Godzilla or Thunder Tail figures? How are they? Thinking about buying them off Ebay.

I had these:

I remember the baby Godzilla being a lot more durable than the adult one I had (shatter tail Godzilla I think), so I preferred it. Same with the remote control guy; the adult one was absolute junk and its arms tore off within weeks of getting it, but the baby one was nearly indestructible.

You mean thunder tail Godzilla breaks easily? Dang it, I was thinking about getting him!
Anyway, yeah I need that baby one!

Some of them break easily, from what I recall, others were pretty good and durable. I never had the Thunder Tail though so I'm not sure on that one personally; the Godzilla I had was a bit smaller and did have a swiping tail but also a jaw that could crunch. His joints were loose from the day I got it, but that (and the red baby one I had) are still in one piece after all these years as opposed to my other Godzilla 98 toys which are looooong gone. So long as you take care of them they should be fine. ;)

And I just remembered: The one Godzilla 98 figure I advise everybody to avoid? The darned Battle Action 8. I said the remote control figures were junk? I take it back. This thing... this thing makes those look like fine art.

I've only ever owned the 6" Zilla with the spring-loaded jaw, but I constantly see that little red baby Zilla at flea markets and garage sales without so much as a scuff. I know next to nothing about these guys, but I can tell you that figure is the Nokia 3310 of Godzilla toys.

Thanks for the info! I think I am going to get the Thunder Tail one, as I like tail articulation!
Also, I notice Bandai released the toys in Japan?

Just think, if history had gone differently, we would have been sharing our figures of this guy instead of Zilla.

Only got 1 Baby Zilla. It's the one that you can pop out of the egg, but I don't have the egg, nor have I ever had it.
Image Come to think of it, I don't remember when or how I got this guy. I've had him before I even knew anything about Godzilla.

I also remember owning a large GINO at some point with this handle on it's back that had a bunch of buttons you could press to make him move as well as a tiny figure that you could get in a meal at Hardy's/Carl's Jr. that was based on the one from Godzilla: The Series.

Are there even any figures of Zilla yet...? There's plenty for G1998, but I can't think of any since Zilla showing up in 2004.

I know there was a set of tiny vinyls released around the time of GFW or ROM III that featured Zilla.

Here's one, a new 3" sculpt of Zilla that comes paired with a Finaro Goji, from the 2006 Battle Box set:
