Monster Toy Spotlight #22 - VARAN

Postby ebirahsmeg1 » Sat May 14, 2016 7:34 pm

Hey folks, I just realized that the most recent spotlight nominee hasn't logged onto this board since April, so just to get things moving again, I'll take #22 for a kaiju that seems to grow on me more and more as the years go by....Varan the Unbelievable :monsterx: :g64: :godzilla:

I'll start with my two Marmit Monster Heaven Varan figures:

Cool stuff as usual Kaijuzoo. Looking forward to seeing more of your Varan figures 8-)

Totally off topic, but have you ever done a custom/assembly of the Marmit Iron Joe Mosu-Goji figure?

In the meantime, here is a Fresh Vinyl review of the X-plus 25cm Varan:

I only have a few figures of Varan... the Trendmasters one is among them. He still screeches too! I'd love to get ahold of the Fewture Models Varan though; I can't find it and wish I could at the price when it was released! I love its sculpt:

I wish! Honestly, I just want to learn more about this figure. There are barely any good photos of it on the web (just the same stock photos that have been floating around for years), and I rarely come across any collector who has it.

Other than Gigabrain's excellent Mosu-Goji figure, I'm not all that thrilled/enamored with most of the 8inch/25cm scale Mosu-Goji figures out there (and don't even get me started on the god d*amn stand nonsense with X-plus 25cm figure.      Pisses me off just thinking about it). So I've been intrigued lately w/ the Iron Joe Mosu-Goji figure. :g64:

When I started this current thread, I was really flip-flopping between Varan & Godzilla 64...Varan won the coin toss.

Although I don't own it, I've always liked that CCP Varan. Nice Glow-in-the-dark variants. Very dynamic pose.

Anyone here have the terrific Marusan Varan figure? No Varan thread would be complete without it.

Just a quick question, how come back then, they didn't want to paint kaiju toys with accurate colors?

I think it probably had to do with the appeal to kids; bright colors are seen to be more appealing I guess. Though some colors were pretty close or worked as a good base; the Godzilla in particular was pretty spot on honestly.

I have this Varan, forgot about him. He was all I could use as a Bandai substitute despite his size. He did the job though. ;)

Here is the only online review I could find of both the Marmit Monster Heaven Varan and Marmit Parababy Varan (this review is, shall we say, not the most articulate).

I guess. I mean they had the paints to do it and I'm pretty sure that some kids way back then wanted them to appear in their normal color.

I remember coming this close to winning an auction for a Marmit Parababy Varan years ago. Was so disappointed to lose out!

I have an old Y-MSF but no room to display him in my room, it's a fragile toy. I forget I own it. Hoping Y-MSF releases their newer variation sometime. I'd buy two.
I don't think I saw the same movies as the rest of you.
I'll always miss Vega.

Surprised no one has posted the Marusan, 30cm Xplus figure, or the YSM-F Varan figures so far :?:

Anyways, here is the Xplus DAM Varan prop (which came w/ Baragon as a DAM set).

And now the weekend is upon, so I nominate the following for to spotlight #23:

Leunames, DoctorMafune, KlenSeven, KaijuZoo, Creature 22, M.o.g.u.e.r.a14, TeddyBaragon, expandkong

Whoever claims it first gets it :g2k:
