Bandai Megalon (?)

Unfortunately, this kind of comparison is just going to come up when you're talking to newer collector. The Bandai fig is no longer the affordable toy it once was, and so people are going to be comparing it against more recent, more specialized "collectibles", when they are deciding which Megalon will be added to their collection. If someone just wants the more screen-accurate of the two, then they're probably going to buy the Y-MSF figure. I think when this guy says that the Y-MSF "dominates" the Bandai, we need to just accept that he means it in this way. He's not making any attempt to compare them on an objective level, or based upon their history and intended purpose, he's talking about them as though they are now contemporaries at their market current prices. The reason for that? As far as a new collector is concerned, they are. Nothing else is going to matter if "realism" is his only concern when ranking them.

However, I do wish we could get away from language like "dominates" in these discussions, unless it's prefaced by something like "I believe that the detail of this sculpt..." or whatever. In this interest of full disclosure, I only own one Y-MSF figure, and that was the Gabara I picked up purely as an impulse buy at G-Fest. It's not a line that I care for much, and since I am first and foremost a "toy" collector, I would still buy the Bandai fig over the Y-MSF, even if I didn't already own a pair of them.

I have to disagree here. The Bandai Megalon (no tag ) was available at G Fest on many tables around the $75 price range. Not a bad price for a $23 year old toy. I sold one at the show.

I meant in relation to its initial release, not in its current status as a collector's item. I understand why a certain type of buyer would make comparisons to collector-targeted figures, and not based on the fact that the Bandai was originally a mass-market toy.

Believe me, you don't have to convince me that the Bandai Megs is easily worth the $75 (truthfully, I just plain like it more than the Y-MSF), but if a new collector just wants to buy whatever Megalon strikes their fancy and is looking at the Bandai and the Y-MSF (which I saw selling between $50 - $75 recently), it makes sense that he's going to compare them against one another on subjective appeal, since the prices are damn close at this point.

When I first started collecting back in 1993, Megalon was a hard figure to find. In the height of the Bandai Boom it was going for over $100 easily. That's probably why the bootleggers chose it, because it was rare and in demand.
Honestly I am still surprised I did not sell both at G Fest. I had tons of people inquire about it.

I think I paid $90 for my tagged one, but that was a while ago now.

I'm surprised you didn't sell out myself, last year I saw people move quite a few of them. A semi-local comic shop I frequent sold off a couple of very beat-up ones for $60, and by "beat-up" I mean they looked like the previous owners dragged them down the highway on a tow-chain.

Then again, I was surprised you didn't sell all three of those Gorosaurus as soon as the dealer room opened up.

The rear-view clinches it. No way that's wear.

Legal status aside, it's still a nice toy.

I like it! It's unique. I wonder where I can find one if it's cheaper than the real one.

Hopefully you didn't pay too much for it, because other than that it's sweet (don't tell us how much or where you got it from I think that's against the rules)!

I got a bootleg Godzilla '64 and '75 because the real ones from the Memorial Box are expensive as hell. I'm perfectly content with them. I'm allowed to say this right considering the rules here?

Bootleg toys, I believe are allowed to be discussed. It's ROM's and bootleg DVD's that are forbidden.

Oh alright then, false alarm people.

So yeah, the Memorial Box incarnations of Godzilla always seem to go for like 60 bucks a pop atleast.

I scored both Godzilla '64 and '74 for 14 bucks total and they look fantastic...can't really tell the difference except the stamping on the bottom of the feet.

As long as you are happy with your Megalon than that's all that matters. No need to compare to other lines either. I love the bandai figures, even though other companies like X-Plus and MonsterArts are on a whole different level detail wise. I love my Bandai Angilas '68, but X-Plus' Angilas looks more true to the film version in every way.

I did pay too much for him ($50) and I have no problem calling out the dealer I consider now of ill repute at G-Fest....or I would have no problem calling them out if I knew who they were.

It wasn't really their fault, it was mine for not knowing better, but in retrospect at that price I feel like they probably knew they were getting one over on me. I also got a Godzilla Millennium from the same booth whose (i didnt notice till later) tail doesn't move - it's like jammed or something.

Mostly my fault for being a twit but I certainly won't be buying anything from them next year if I go.

Eh, don't sweat it dude. Nothing you can do now. There are shitty people all over the world who are trying to rip off people who don't know better. All of us are naive to such things at first unless we have had someone in the know teach us these things. Either that, or we learn the hard way and bite the bullet on a 50 dollar bootleg (hey, it could have been alot worse). I bet you'll be more careful next time, and for 50 bucks you got a pretty cool bootleg and invaluable experience.
