CTHimes wrote:"Chitanoceras" is obviously a poor translation of Titanosaurus' Japanese name (Chitanozaurusu). As far as I can tell, the name originated from Michael Weldon's The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film (1983), which is one of the best cult film books ever written (despite errors like this one). To say that that book was an invaluable resource for other film writers is definitely an understatement.

So no, this author didn't make up too much (though it's obvious he didn't watch some of the movies). In fact, a lot of his info here seems to come from the aforementioned book, as well as other earlier books on cult movies ("Terror of Godzilla" as an alternate title for "Godzilla's Revenge" comes from a book by Don Glut, if memory serves). You have to remember that back in the 90s, even when the internet was around, there still wasn't a lot of great info on any of these movies out there. Yeah, some of this guy's reviews are pretty condescending, but give the man some credit. He did some research, even if it isn't all correct, and he got his book published, which I'm pretty sure no one here (myself included) has managed to do. ;)

Research on a movie would usually start by watching the damn movie.

He's just some guy that used Godzillas name to sell his crappy book.
Plus people need to stop acting like real research was almost nonexistent till the internet came around. It just meant a REAL researcher had to get off his ass and actually find out what he needs to know to write a book.
Sit back and relax.

Speaking of Roger Ebert, does anyone else think he could be a closet Godzilla fan? Like he's too ashamed to admit it and just craps all over these films when he brings them up? I think he stated his favorite G film was Godzilla VS Hedorah in his written review of G '85. He also gave G '85 a negative review without paying attention to it yet had the movie poster clearly seen in the opening credits of his show with Gene Siskel. That does not make sense. If Roger Ebert has a movie poster of a film he hates on his office wall you must acquit*

BOT, I had John Stanley's book of reviews as a kid. I threw it out a few weeks later just for his lack of understanding of the kaiju eiga history and genre. (around that time I noticed every single movie reviewer never bothered to WATCH these films)

I died laughing at the Terror of Mechagodzilla review. That one sounded like it was trolling us the fans.

There are many reactions fans have to reviews like these but of them two I've noticed seem to be the most common.

1. The fans find it F'N funny and get a good laugh.

or

2. The fans are angry and disappointed.

I don't see why any of these would make somebody "angry". That just seems like such an overblown reaction to something so silly. Seriously, some of these "reviews" are hilarious!

Some of them are. Those errors tell me the reviewers didn't pay that much attention to the movies, if they did watch them.

Yeah, really. It's really funny how angry some people get at trivial things like this.

All right, I'll bite. Why do reviews like these and Ebert's get me in such a tizzy?

1) They mislead the readers. Imagine that you were someone wanting to get into the franchise. You wonder where to start, and not knowing of TK, you look up some reviews. Unfortunately some of the reviews you stumble upon are by this joker, and now your interest in the franchise has been lowered. You still have some interest so you decide to look up the first film of the franchise which fans praise, but you stumble upon a review by a highly respected film critic (guess who) and after reading you end up deciding that the franchise isn't worth your time.

2) They're skreeonk half-assed to high heaven and hell. When I was in high school, I had to do film reviews for some of my english courses. If I handed in anything similar to these, I would have skreeonk failed the assignment because they'd be riddled with so many errors my teachers would question whether or not I was skreeonk paying any attention at all. These clowns are getting paid for their work, so I skreeonk expect they put in a tad bit more effort in doing their skreeonk job.

Every Ebert review I've read sounds like he fell asleep in the middle of the movie and made up what he missed, then he goes on in tangents about things that have nothing to do with the movie.

Huh. Well, this guy's the expert. Obviously, everything I know about Godzilla is wrong.

Oh well.
