what do kaiju eat?

inspired by the 'how long do they live' thread, comes this next installment of random questions about our favorite giant monsters.

so, it's been noted that godzilla 'eats' radiation through...osmosis or something in the 85 film. and in DAM rodan swoops down and grabs up a dolphin. it's also mentioned in that film that the island has 'all the food they can eat'.

but what is it exactly that they eat? what does ghidora do when he gets the munchies? king ceasar's favorite snack?

I imagine Godzilla eats whales and squid. Yamane does say he's a meat eater, and he's seen hunting in Ghidorah TTHM.

As for radiation it's sort of like insulin shots for him. That's how I make sense of it. It's something his body needs to survive. At least in the later films.

In the original films, the islanders sent out young virgin girls to sea as sacrifice to Godzilla, so I guess he also eats humans too? Mothra may be an herbivore, so she eats the native plants of her island. Anguirus is tricky, he looks like he has sharp, predatory teeth but he's supposed to be a species of Ankylosaurus which are herbivores. Gamera originally ate fire if I recall correctly... And Mechagodzilla probably consumes diesel. X)

Godzilla could eat whales or some of Anguirus' kind, I always imagined Anguirus being like a wild boar, an unpicky omnivore, Rodan would hunt dolphins, fish, and bugs, and King Kong would pretty much have the same diet as normal gorillas do.

They eat the charred body parts of Ultra-monsters, which are constantly raining down on the Japanese countryside after being hacked apart or blown up in the various series/films.

Well the natives sent the young girls as a sacrifice. We never had any indication that they were ever eaten. Sacrifices are made for lots of religions on some sort of frequency but it doesn't mean anything actually happens. Those poor girls probably drowned eventually or died from starvation/dehydration.

Off the top of my head:

- Kong and Oodako both drink the Faro Island berry juice, implying some level of herbivorous inclination.

- Grand King Ghidorah eats kids.

- Kamacuras and Kumonga eat meat, up to and including fellow kaiju.

- Zilla/American Godzilla eats fish, or other meat if fish isn't available.

- I've never seen his movie, but I remember hearing that Showa Manda eats people. Presumably other meat as well.

- Showa Gyaos drinks blood.

- Space Godzilla absorbs solar energy, so he may not need to physically eat.

Well Kaiju's eat either Fellow kaiju after a long battle or some wild life (Whales, Seal and such)
And others like JAGzilla said Drink Blood or Absorb energy (Like Radiation)

Radiation and/or earth's life force? I know the latter's more from the Gamera trilogy, but I kind of like that explanation. I always find it a weird mental image when Godzilla and other monsters eat plants or animals (That is, monsters, that haven't been shown to eat).

Which is why I'm quite grateful Godzilla eating that rat monster in Biollante was cut (Even though I would have liked to see the rat monster).

There are good number of monsters that are confirmed to be carnivorous, mainly from the Showa era. Frankly, I prefer the monsters (the ones native to Earth anyway) having to consume their nutrients like every other organism on this planet.

That's what I was disclaiming in that first quote in parenthesis.

Speaking of confirmed monsters who ate:

- Minya ate some fruits in his debut movie.

- Godzilla Junior ate roses in his youth. I don't know if he ate the whales he apparently killed in the Destroyah film, though he was probably taking out his aggression on them after being irradiated.

- Hedorah NOMs on your pollutions!

- Heisei Gyaos outright ate humans, as did Zedus. Irys did something similar, while the Legion appeared to chow on carbon.

- I kind of speculate that Biollante gets nutrients like any other plant.

Baragon pretty much ate whatever he could find, horses, cows, people. Hell I wouldn't put it past him trying to eat another monster bigger and stronger then him if he was starving and desperate for food.

Showa Ebirah is another confirmed maneater. I assume he supplements that with whatever large sea life (sharks, whales, etc.) he can catch.

Megaguirus and her swarm drain energy from whatever animals or kaiju they can find.
