If Godzilla had been called Gigantis...

If Godzilla had been called Gigantis...

I wondered, what do you think it would be like if Godzilla had kept the Gigantis name after ''Gigantis The Fire Monster''? Just a silly thought, but I must wonder what you guys think... :?: :godzilla:

...he'd be called Gigantis, I guess. As long as his movies were otherwise unchanged, I doubt things would be all that much different. The name is admittedly less original and harder to parody with things like Dogzilla or whatever, but that's probably not much of an issue.

Nothing would've changed at all most likely.

Gigantis vs King Kong
Gigantis vs Mothra
Gigantis vs Mecha-Gigantis?

That makes me think if Gimantis was a coincidence or not.

The names "Gimantis" and "Spiega" were created by Toho when they were originally promoting SON OF GODZILLA. They're basically the English equivalent of the monsters' Japanese names.

Wait...holy SHIT - Terror of MechaGigantis?!

Sorry, false alarm. Nothing would be different.

In all honesty, "Godzilla" is catchy, in a way that the alternative isn't. I doubt "Gigantis" would have captured the public imagination as well, and so the movies might have been even more of a "cult" thing. Fandom might have a different face today, but that's prolly it.

Gigantis vs. Gigan?
Since the name Gigantis has been effectively purged by Toho, makes me wonder if you could still get into any legal trouble for using it. :P

''King Kong vs. Gigantis''
''Son of Gigantis''
''Gigantis vs. Mechagigantis''

Is it just me, or does Gigantis sound sort of ape-like? I don't know, I just picture a giant gorilla before a dinosaur.

It would be a different name, but same atomic dinosaur. We'd be like Germany. Some Godzilla titles carry the name Frankenstein in them.

japan would be Gojira.
America would be Gigantis.

If Godzilla had been called Gigantis throughout the rest of his career think of some of these film titles:

Gigantis vs Gigan
Gigantis' Revenge
Gigantis vs Megalon
Gigantis 1985
Gigantis 2000
Gigantis Final Wars

This thread doesn't even make sense. Toho didn't rename Godzilla "Gigantis" so the third Godzilla film would have been called "King Kong vs Godzilla" no matter what. And who in their right mind would have stuck with a foolish re-naming like that for more than one film?

Not only is Gigantis a really generic name (I agree, it conjures up images of giant ape-like or mammalian monsters), you just cannot scream it nearly as well as Godzilla or Gojira. I doubt any kid would ever point to an imaginary monster while playing and scream "GIGANTISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!"

That's a great point. Toho created the English name "Godzilla" while "Gigantis" was coined by Paul Schreibman, who thought the second film would be more marketable if it starred an "all new" monster. He was wrong, and GIGANTIS THE FIRE MONSTER quickly faded into obscurity. There was absolutely nothing that would have motivated Toho or another American distributor from dropping the name "Godzilla" from future films.
