What Godzilla movies do you actually like?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

You'd be surprised how a 35mm screening and/or a DVD release can sway people's opinions on a film.

Did you go to the 35mm screening in Keene, NH?

Nope, but I've seen several Showa films on 35mm (MATANGO, GIGAN, DAM), and they were all beautiful.

You're lucky you've had the opportunity to see so many in a theater. A showing of one of these films seem fairly rare, and they almost never play around me.

Actually, I just realized; all three of those were at G-Fest 2008!

The only other Showa film I've seen other than GOJIRA, is EBIRAH HORROR OF THE DEEP (subtitled).

I saw GODZILLA '54 three times in 2004 and GODZILLA VS. MEGALON this April. Not counting the DVD screenings of KKE and KKvsG at G-Fest.

I have not seen a Godzilla movie in the theater since 1969!!! There is not a theater in my area that plays them. So it is the DVD for me.

I thought G-Fest only showed DVDs?

That's actually awesome you got to see one back then. Why didn't you watch any of the 70's films or Godzilla 1985 or Godzilla 2000 when they got their theatrical release in the United States?

You can sometimes catch a Godzilla or other type of kaiju movie at an art-house/independent theater. Granted, I had to travel by car 3 hours to get to the showing of Son of Godzilla, but it was worth it.

Well, it obviously wasn't always like that. GODZILLA was the last one the Pickwick ever screened on 35mm (at G-Fest 2010), and one of the reels broke about a third of the way through, and they ended up having to pop in the DVD anyway. The difference in quality was painfully obvious.

The Pickwick has apparently gone all-digital now, meaning prints can't even be shown anymore. It's really f'n lame.

Do they have a 4K projector? Those are good in terms of quality. I don't think any Godzilla films have been transferred to that format, though.

But that is pretty lame they don't have 35mm capabilities. Especially considering that was the way these films were meant to be seen.

When I was young in the 70s my parents were struggling and movies were not in the budget. I cried because I couldn't see Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (Hedorah).

None of the local theaters played Godzilla 2000 but a friend did give me a VHS bootleg of the Japanese version.

^ Also, from what I can tell, several Godzilla movies released in the US during the '70s received fairly limited releases. Some are rarely mentioned in detail in the trade mags I've looked at. In Boxoffice Magazine, GODZILLA'S REVENGE was listed under its various titles on the feature chart throughout 1971 but was never reviewed; GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND was listed as an upcoming release and appears on the feature chart but was also never reviewed; plus, I can't find anything written about THE TERROR OF GODZILLA in the mag.

I remember seeing a big mock-up poster for GODZILLA 2000 at a theater back then, and also seeing ads for it on TV, but it didn't interest me since Godzilla didn't look very much like Godzilla; in fact, I think I assumed it was a sequel to GINO or something. Kind of regret never seeing it in theaters, but whatever.

So I should commit suicide because I don't like camp and cheese? I liked the 60s at least...

None of the 70s movies have any camp elements.

People here are getting Camp and Kitsch confused.
