Could Anyone See Toho Create A Modern Showa Era?

But Toho doesn't have balls and they feel the need to reinvent the wheel with every movie. So that ain't happening.

Why not? Is Toho afraid of falling at the task or something? Or is it a matter of demand and popularity, and of course, interest for another Godzilla film?

Seeing the commercial success of films like Always: Sunset on Third Street and its sequels — very nostalgic for a lot of the older movie-goers in Japan — I can't help wondering if Toho couldn't cash in on a similar appeal with 'period' Godzilla films, set in the 1960s.

They could be selective about what makes the transition from the actual Showa movies to any neo-Showa productions. And I'd love to see them sculpt the monsters in classic styles.

The older members of the audience might enjoy this, and it's possible that kids would also groove on it... seeing how fantasy films set in earlier periods can appeal to that demographic, too.

And neo-Showa films would have to appeal to the kids at least as much as the adults. I remember reading in business magazines in the 90s that Toho made a lot more money on toy sales than ticket sales, from the Heisei films.

Though I'd much rather see a continuation of the Heisei series, a Showa series sequel would be great as well.

Agreed, this would be ideal. I hate how the 90's and especially 00 films are so bogged down by exposition; and you can't beat the oldschool designs, sounds and SFX IMO.

I also agree with whoever mentioned Monster Island - such a great idea with so much potential, why it hasn't been explored since the Showa era is beyond me.

I think it would be awesome to see modern Toho kaiju films done in the old style but with new ideas. There's no chance it will happen, of course.

I've thought for the past year that it might be cool Toho could remake all their old Showa movies.....

I wouldn't mind modern takes on Varan and Dogora tbh. As much as I like those two, I think they'd be the best for a reboot because of their fairly mediocre films.

Also, I'd dig a Showa style Godzilla/ Jet Jaguar/ Zone Fighter TV show with suits that are like the old ones.

What exactly do you mean by a "modern Showa era"?

If you mean an actual continuation of the Showa series, I have mixed feelings. Several big-shot kaiju like Ghidorah, Gigan & Mechagodzilla are dead, and it would be a shame not to have them take part in the series. There's also the fact that when we left off, Godzilla was in super hero form. Do we want Godzilla to go back to that?

Now, if you simply mean a series in the style of the Showa films, I'd be all for it.

...That...wouldn't work at all. A Showa film and CGI are two very different things that don't go well together. If the film were CGI, it would cease to be in the "Showa style".

Oh lol, yeah I meant in the Showa Style, (Kinda had a lacking of words to completely get my statement across, sorry about that) but also if there was some kind of continuation or modern reboot.

I don't understand the Showa Revival. I don't like how Ultraman did it and I wouldn't like if Godzilla did it.

I'd definitely wouldn't mind Godzilla to be a full fledged hero again.

^You kidding? I'd LOVE Godzilla to return to his champion and defender of Earth phase. I don't want him to be super happy, but seeing him as a monster who's on humanity's side somewhat and having team up with Rodan, Anguirus, Mothra and King Caesar again would be sweet. It'd be a nice change of pace from the lumbering beast we've seen since 1984 (not that I don't like that characterization of Godzilla. I just want a breath of fresh air.).

Godzilla making plans with Anguirus and Rodan with insane fights, now this is what I want to see.

I just wanna see a good-ol' tag team match with Godzilla and Angurius again. One of the things I really liked about the Showa age was Godzilla's allies with various other monsters. That's something I kinda missed in the Hesei and Millennium series.

Yes, I love those team-ups. Godzilla and Rodan in Monster Zero; Godzilla and Anguirus in Godzilla vs. Gigan, all good stuff. The relationships, like how Anguirus attacked Fake Godzilla in Mechgodzilla, speaks a thousand words of how great these friendships were.

Hope to see that if TOHO ever starts up the series again.

Man, I still get a kick when Anguirus jumps backwards at Ghidorah, Jet Jaguar and Godzilla flying out of the ring of fire or Rodan grabbing Godzilla and the two flying into Ghidorah. It's just pure fun.

Also, if Toho ever DOES start the series back up again and does some sort of new Showa era, I'd love to see some newer, Showa styled kaiju. I'm talking about how much of the Showa kaiju were wonderfully simplistic in design and execution and didn't suffer from random crap on them or horrible thunder thighs. I think that's one of the reason why they're so appealing in the fandom and just the general public; they're simple and not trying to be too badass or trying to be too cool. That's why I think newer monsters should be a lot simpler and not something totally unoriginal.

Also, I REALLY want to see a bad-guy Mechagodzilla again. Once you make Mechagodzilla a boring Megazord for generic military guys to pilot, he loses the charm his 70's incarnation had.

I don't buy that all three are dead. We can conclude that Ghidorah died at the end of "Destroy All Monsters" but truth be told, I don't necessarily subscribe to that and Rodan and Angurius both had much more established deaths and managed to pop back up in later films. Mechagodzilla can't really be "dead" since it is a machine. When did Gigan die?
