Favorite Gigan and Ghidorah Incarnations

I forgot about the Uchusen Gigan. I'm quite fond of that as well.

Rody wrote:GMK Ghidorah, I admit, is growing on me; It's actually a pretty good suit. The body mass is almost perfect, and the varan-esque horns work surprisingly well. My favorite aspect is that this Ghidorah has TALONS, not those pitiful stubby toes he's always suffered from. All the issues with this suit (short necks, small wings, facial design, etc.) are due more to the role he filled, not the suit itself. Nevertheless, these issues mean that this design can't work as the "Definitive" King Ghidorah.

Basically. Check out this;

It does a wonderful job of giving the GMK Ghidorah more appropriate proportions. If it had a bit more of a fearsome face, it'd be an excellent incarnation (speaking strictly from design, of course) of the character.

This one's a little more movie accurate but I'm gonna spam it anyway.

I like the talons too. It looks like he can really snatch up something from the air.

Gigan's my favorite monster, but I've never heard of 'Uchusen.'

^Well, he had a very serious demeanor when compared to his Showa counterpart. He seemed to be more of a silent killer, but had a thing against Mothra.

Maybe I'm looking too deep into this, but he definitely had a personality.

There's a Japanese magazine called 'Space Magazine Uchusen', which, in the last couple years, has featured some very impressive (& slightly redesigned) Toho kaiju art by a fellow named Yasushi Torisawa.

We've had a couple threads about it in the past:

I can't believe so many people are saying the FW Gigan. I don't get the appeal of this ugly steampunk thing that dies like a f@cking bitch the exact same way twice and doesn't show even a fraction of the personality and character of the original, let alone the ability to fight for more than a nanosecond without getting his entire head blown off.

I can't believe the way Kitamura was able to use one terrible movie to manipulate a large segment of the younger Godzilla fan community into liking an easily inferior version of a classic monster.

FW Gigan DOES have personality, BECAUSE he dies like a retard the same way twice. It's funny. He's a cocky meat-head of a bully that THINKS he is the baddest thing ever, and clearly puts all his faith in "superior" technology. It's an interesting shift from the Showa version who starts out as a bully, but then shows his true colors as a self-serving coward as soon as the fight starts to turn in his opponent's favor. I love both Gigans, but I think I like the Showa version just a bit more. Green and gold just look so good on his silly ass. Maybe a photoshopper could conduct a sweet experiment and paint FW Gigan with Showa colors... (and vice versa!)

For me it's Heisei Ghidorah all the way. I love the monster design. I know he's a little stiff, and his heads aren't as wild as Showa Ghidorah, but I just dig the Heisei one more. Personality wise, it's the original Showa Ghidorah... I like him better when he's acting on his own instead of being enslaved by aliens.

The all-over-the-place heads of the Showa-era King G are probably my favorite part of the character. Just reckless, wild destruction, and unlike anything we've ever seen from other kaiju. It also makes for one subtle but very cool moment in GTTHM - when Rodan flies over him, kicking all of his heads, to get his attention, and those flailing heads all line up and look at Rodan before King G goes airborne in pursuit. Love that shot.

Ghidorah

Grand King Ghidorah: His design is approporiately terrifying and I love his wings- it really makes him look regal. Technically he's the real successor to the original Showa Ghidorah, following him in being a total sadistic bastard who goes around eating children specifically. He's almost cartoonishly evil- but its RoM, so it works. Showa Ghyidorah kinda gets points notched off for those ugly hair-tufts and being an alien pet 90% of the time- he's only the devastating planet destroyer for a blink of an eye. Heisei is boring, although he does look cool, and I don't care for GMK.

Gigan

Showa Gigan here. He's way more threatening, yet amusing and entertaining, being a sadistic little bully, and his partnership with Megalon is much more solid than the MX-Gigan nonsense. He's also made Godzilla bleed, while FW Gigan gains 10 billion new flashy capabilities and ends up getting decapicated twice. He could be a little less plump, but otherwise he's a really cool kaiju that bleeds personality.
RIP, Old TK.

In Order for each monster:

Gigan:

1.- Showa: Original and being portrayed as a wicked and strange monster.
2.- Millenium: It has a cool and futuristic look but just that.

King Ghidorah:

1.- Heisei: Evil and malicious face (faces to be more precise) and the first design that i watched of Ghidorah.

2.- Showa: Wicked and crazy, at first i didnt like the hair in his necks but i changed my mind about them and it just gives him a more
demented feel to it.

3.- Millenium: Least favorite but awesome in its own way, he has that heroic feel. Those horns at the side of the mouth are just great
(Nice tribute to Varan). And those pictures above give him a more imponent stance and scarier feel to it.
Unstoppable Fury , Unthinkable Power , Unbreakable Will.

Millennium Gigan and Grand Ghidorah are my favorites of the characters (you can tell I like GKG, look at my avatar for pete's sake) and as far as GKG having Heisei KG's roar, I liked it. I always liked Heisei King Ghidorah's roar, and his design is my second favorite.

Except GFW Gigan isn't steampunk...at all.

And I don't get where Gigan (or almost any monster for that matter) has a personality.

Do you mean all the monsters from the different eras? Most if not all the monsters display personality. Showa Gigan for example displays a personality of craziness, he enjoys making things bleed, as displayed in Godzilla vs. Gigan.

Rodan has an energetic personality, he thinks he's pretty cool and top dog, as seen in Ghidorah.

Destoroyah displays a personality of being sadistic, he doesn't just beat his opponents, he humiliates them, as seen in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

Those are just a few examples.

I saw him use his weapons effectively. I saw no sadism or craziness in Gigan's nor any semblance of personality.

I saw Rodan slap his wings in GTTHM...not really much else.

Detoroyah is one of the few that has a personality.

The rest just seem to be silent protagonists and we project such personalities upon them.

^Right when he saw he was bleeding the heck out of Godzilla, he looks creepily happy and presided to do it even more.

And in Godzilla vs. Megalon, he takes Jet Jaguar hostage, another display of personality.

You're probably right about projecting, but the monsters display something for us to project deeper personalities. Monsters like Hedorah and Baragon barely showcase any type of personality, it's us the fans that give them that.

But a lot of the monsters, (Titanosaurus, Mothra, the conversation between Godzilla and Anguirus in Godzilla vs. Gigan) have distinctive personalities.

I saw no happiness in an inanimate object...Cause its a suit. It can't take facial expressions unless it has the mechanical joints in it to do so. And the Gigan suit isn't made to do that...

And yes...Gigan is a villain. Most villains like hostages. It is a generally evil thing to do. What you're proving is that Gigan does EVIL things.

Nextamente...I see no distinct personalities in any of the monsters spare the GvG where they actually talk.

Yeah I don't think Godzilla's ever had much personality. It doesn't take a being of complexity to do a few campy quirks.
