Are you watching a toho movie right now, if so, what?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

Watching the final battle from Ghidorah right now. Epic shit.

Been needing to see a few that I have been (purposely) avoiding from the 1990s series.

Maybe this afternoon we'll try Biollante or MechaGodzilla...

I can't get enough of this movie, it's so moving. And I haven't even heard of this movie until recently, I'm suprised no one on Toho Kingdom has talked about this film yet. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035533/

^ It could simply be because watching Imperial Japan blow the living hell out out of people is not a enjoyable time at the movies for a lot of folks.

Don't get me wrong, though, that's not to say it isn't a decent film. I loved Yamato, for example, despite it taking on similar historical material. The difference though, is the date of production. Yamato is a modern film, produced in retrospect long after the full nature of Japan's WWII campaigns had been revealed to the world. The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malaya was produced in 1942, and so it will always carry the distinct aura of a propaganda film produced while untold tortures and atrocities were being committed by the Japanese military in East Asia. The average Japanese soldier was most likely unaware of this, of course, and so we should be careful not to demonize them along with their leadership. However, we shouldn't expect film buffs to be able to totally quarantine that knowledge in the back of their minds while they watch a war film, either.

One thing we can all agree on? The special effects in The War at Sea are absolutely incredible. Check out this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... H_c#t=258s

And though it isn't Toho (Toei was Fox's Japanese partner), for the most thoroughly researched film version of the Pearl Harbor attack, everyone should see Tora, Tora, Tora.

^ Hell yeah, the Special Effects were great! I'm glad I'm not the only one on here who has seen this movie.

"Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla" a few nights ago and just finished "Terror of MG"

Love both of these and am glad I have the full version of "Terror" with Katsura's suicide and other short scenes that were left out of earlier versions. Good ending to the Showa era.

Nomming on some Guacamole and chips while watching Biollante for the third time. The Bio-Major guy said the famous line a few minutes ago.

Loving GMK. 8-) About half-way through it now...some amazing stuff!

Good acting! Good dialogue! Very well shot! Awesome effects! GREAT political statement! Wow.... (Only one gripe, really...those scumbag kids...the dog in the boat... :( ...I hope that their flesh is being melted from their bones while cocooned by the larva... Glad they showed that the pup was O.K. in the news footage.)

Now I get the gist of this evil-looking Godzilla figure that I have. (My wife got me a Godzilla a few years back that I dont much care for. He has a 90s-ish body, and his eyes are dead-white, like a zombie.)

Back to the film -

The Woman in the Dunes. Amazing film, especially given its dramatic sparsity. Thank god Criterion released this gem over here.

....Aaaaaand the beating heart at the ocean bottom. 8-) GRAND stuff! Man....too much spot-on dialogue and too many blow-out scenes to even mention! This one ranks WAY up there for me.

Small complaint/small admission: I would have liked to have heard more of the true Honda-San's marches, rather than silly boy band/techno-remix crap.
The last few father/daughter scenes, coupled with the ORIGINAL music being used at the very end, caused me to lose it a bit...

As a fan of Godzilla films for nearly 40 years, I will honestly say that this is a 3.8 out of 5, any day of the week.

Last night I watched a Godzilla audio commentary of Gojira. It was actually pretty interesting. I definitely plan to watch more!

Watched most of the Japanese version of King Kong Escapes yesterday (up to the point where Kong breaks the mind control when digging for Element X). I'll watch the rest today.

The ending of that one. I remember being literally stunned with the message on the screen, and sitting in my chair with my jaw agape for a good 10 seconds. If I'd been holding anything in my hand, I would have dropped it.
