Will the Japan tsunami/nuclear accident create new film era?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

The Lucky Dragon incident occurred in March of 1954. Gojira was released in November of the same year. There's no such thing as "too soon." To answer the thread's question, I certainly expect a reaction from Japanese artists and storytellers, cinematic and otherwise. However, I would have to know what you mean by a "new film era" to comment further. You seem to be talking only about monster movies, and I would expect a broader response than that.

Who knows; maybe we'll get a film in which a group of fun loving Japanese socialites crash-land their boat on a desert island where they drink the water and slowly mutate into tsunamis.

I still hold that a FvB remake could fit the disaster. Frankenstein for the Fukushima incident. Baragon for the earthquake/tsunami. Baragon could be a more destructive force than he usually is, and Frankenstein could get a sweet update. 8-)

^ Would Oodako make an appearance then? I don't know how he'd play in, but it would be kind of cool, no?

Maybe he'd be washed up on the shores because of the tsunami and fight Frankenstein and this time lose. I never understood why they'd put Oodako in the end of the film if he has NO involvement in it. I understand Eiji Tsubayara had a thing for octopi, but really? :?

Hey, at least it was an eye-pleasing fight. But yeah it seems totally random and out of place. I can understand why they decided to cut it from the final movie.

Yes! Godamn even (some) assholes let some time pass before making 9/11 jokes.
I know what he's getting at. He's not saying "let's do it now to cash in on the tragedies", he's just basically asking if that the tragedies down the line will inspire a film like "Gojira". It's an honest question.

Exactly.

Two points:

1. There's no such thing as too soon (unless you're a baby).

2. Kaiju movies, as much as I love them, are a dead genre. You'll get an indie-movie labor of love from Japan every once in a while (stuff like Guilala or Big Man Japan), and a big budget American attempt at a revival (Kong '05, Cloverfield, Zilla) some summers, but it won't be a pop culture craze again like it was in the 50s-70s any time soon. Superhero movies have filled that role, and will continue to until audiences eventually lose interest.

Tell you what guys, if a disaster/tokusatusu film emerges in the next year that's clearly inspired by the events that have happened recently in Japan, I'll send (some of) you a bag of Chips' Ahoy. How's that sound?

Any decent film will take longer than a year to write, get financing for, get a screenplay approved, get made, and get released. That is a silly wager. Make it 2 or 3 years at least and you got a bet. I like my Chips Ahoy with vanilla ice cream by the way. I'll waive the Chips Ahoy though if you just apologize for splattering your urine all over my thread earlier.

1 movie does not equal a full-blown genre revival*. Genre death is not total, permanent, or even necessarily a bad thing. You don't see very many westerns any more, but man, when one comes out they're usually epic. Musicals, which used to be a huge, HUGE genre for movies, were deader than DEAD for decades but they're creeping back into the mainstream too, especially with stuff like Chicago or the inescapable Glee.

*Though I'd love for it to be the catalyst that gets things moving in that direction. As it stands, LP Godzilla falls squarely in the American big budget hopeful revival. Unless it does gangbusters commercially and with movie-goers, it'll probably go over roughly as well as Kong '05 or Clovie.

Nah, I'm good. I don't feel the need to apologize for anything. As for the ice cream, that will have to be on your own dime. ;)

Also, what's with you and all this penis/peeing stuff anyway?

Of course this will effect Japanese film. I'm not sure giant monsters will be a part of it, but you could see movies about the men who volunteered to help cool the reactors. Or films about how a person loses everything and has to start life all over again. I see more drama coming from this than giant feet pounding Tokyo pavement.
The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

Anybody hear about how senior citizens in Japan are volunteering to help clean up the nuclear sites? Their reasoning being that their life expectancy is only 10-15 more years anyway, and it generally takes cancer 10+ years to manifest, so they figure "better us than them." Talk about some real fucking heroes, I want to see a movie about them.

talk about film scripts, that sounds like its right from the 70s sci fi film Logan's Run.

A MATANGO JOKE!
No one ever mentions that movie on here, I was beginning to think I was almost the only one who'd seen it! :huge: Sorry. Overly orgasmic reaction, but I fucking love that movie.
