Legend of the Superbeasts: Wolfman vs Godzilla

Post by gojiguy »

Recently, Gamu posted the poster for Wolfman vs Godzilla in the Godzilla Fan Club on Facebook and it was a revelation. I remember as a kid hearing about The Yeti or Snowman vs Godzilla but I passed it off as being a dumb kid and getting confused by this VHS box: http://tohokingdom.com/articles/images/ ... dtimes.htm

But in actuality, the film I saw picture of when I was a kid was Legend of the Superbeasts: Wolfman vs Godzilla- a fan film made in the 1980s on Super 8mm film that is ULTRA rare. It used a recreation of the King Goji suit so many sites inaccurately listed it as an alternate KKvG or made around the same time. The werewolf was also white so people mistook it as a Yeti. As far as we know, there was apparently a trailer released in 1993 and a special with all the footage shot on it in 2002. I have never seen either. It was also apparently started in 1979.

Anyways, here are the only production materials I can find. I figured I would post this here to see if we can find any more information about this and see if anyone owns a copy of this ultra rare film in any form or if anyone has seen it!

It'll be a cold day in hell when this ends up on Youtube. But I'd love to see this.

Yet another topic on the thing but at least there's new information.

I'd love to see it if it comes about but somehow I doubt a fanfilm this legendary can live up to any expectations.
I don't think I saw the same movies as the rest of you.
I'll always miss Vega.

I can understand why people mistake this for an alternate KKvG.
The posters look almost identical, and that picture of Wolfman grabbing Godzilla's tail is a scene just like the one in KKvG.
Anyway, i suppose this the holy grail of Godzilla films, now?

August posted this on another forum:
August wrote:FYI: "Superbeast" is is incorrect. The conjugation is "Huge" (巨=kyo) and "Beast" (獣=ju), therefore is should be transliterated along the lines of "Legendary Colossal Beast", and it makes for a nice genre reference. The full title is 『伝説の巨獣狼男対ゴジラ』(Densetsu-no Kyoju Ookami Otoko tai Gojira) or "Wolfman, The Legendary Colossal Beast vs. Godzilla".
According to an article on 8mm filmmakers from Uchusen #2 (Spring 1980), an earlier version of this fan-film, produced and directed by Shizuo Nakajima (an effects reel running 15 minutes), which began production in 1979, boasted a Godzilla '64 suit, a completely different version of the Wolfman, and Baragon! Originally, the were going to have several Ultraman monsters appear in the film as well. This was all before they paired it down to just Godzilla and the Colossal Wolfman, and built a Godzilla '62 suit. The monster suits were made by the director and a young Fuyuki Shinada, who went on to become a pro monster-maker for film and television. In 1989, Nakajima, created a "trailer" from the footage shot for the aborted project. Another version of the trailer (running 5 minutes) was completed and run at an amateur film festival in 1993. In 2002, Nakajima put together a compilation of all of footage shot for the film, running approximately ten minutes for another public screening. The below are scans are from my personal collection:

Earlier version screened in 1980 (from Uchusen #2, Spring 1980). Note Baragon in lower left photo.

I'd say 0, since odds are someone would have found and shared those files by now. Whenever they're released, I guarantee everyone will know about it. These films are too legendary to be released without attention.

There is also mention of Legend of the Super Beast Godzilla vs. the Wolfman in issue 16 of G-Fan page 26. The article is by Robert Biondi titled The Evolution of Godzilla which is about all the Godzilla suits that were used. In the case of Godzilla vs. the Wolfman it says it was the 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla suit. What I would like to know is what issue of Fangoria has an article on Godzilla vs. the Wolfman ? I know there is one but which issue. I also saw the Face Book poster picture for the movie very nice indeed ! The picture is also posted on the Kaiju Movie Poster Collectors Group on Face Book.

A guy in a Facebook group I'm in is in contact with the director and has been interviewing him and getting some exclusive images. We're waiting to see what all he comes back with.
I cannot wait to read or see anything!

I'm pretty sure a crap load of people that was in that small room with me can verify it. Anyways, I am having trouble uploading it on youtube from my phone so I may have to wait until I get home to put it up. But yeah, its not a full movie, it has a couple scenes showing Godzilla fighting Wolfman around Nagoya castle I believe and the other shots have the army shooting wolfie with the mazers and stuff and then an AMAZING transformation of the wolfman, its awesome. Also I guess there was an earlier version that was different.. instead of using the 62 Suit they used the 64 suit and a revamped wolfman design.

Also, despite it being a fan film that was filmed in 83 (one yr before Return of Godzilla), it looks EXACTLY like an early 60s kaiju movie, the atmosphere, everything.
