I’m not saying it doesn’t still merit discussion, and I’m definitely not trying to defend it; it’s terrible no matter how you slice it

It’s the fact that 21 years on we’re still having the “Zilla” argument

In honesty I kind of am still upset that G’98 still continues to cast such a shadow over the franchise; it’s a really bad movie and yet it still continues to be the first thing almost an entire generation thinks of first when they hear “Godzilla”

It was so strange how he and that other guy basically went from “KoTM’s critical response means critics are bad” to “KoTM’s critical response means that America’s white Christian culture is unable to appreciate Asian craftsmanship”

we could see some real success from Chinese audiences. Domestic sheep be damned. (Especially since China seem to like the monsterverse so far)

Pardon my racism but skreeonking heck, it sometimes feels like American audiences would rather pay millions to watch paint dry than watch Kaijus duking it out.

The Western GA and its anxiety about being popular and avoiding "cringe" probably explains GKOTM's popularity everywhere except North America. Zhang Ziyi's character touched upon a culture clash regarding the kaiju. Dragons can be interpreted in a positive manner in Asian mythology, but Christian audiences cannot accept a reptilian creature as a hero. To US audiences, anything that deviates from groupthink is "cringe", whereas international audiences are less self-conscious about following their interests.

It’s been 21 years

Christ. 21 years. I was in high school when it came out.

I was 8. And it was the first "Godzilla" movie I saw on the big screen. I, a little boy, left the movie stunned and confused not understanding how or why they did that to Godzilla. No exaggeration. Godzilla 2000 may not have done all that well in theaters here but I'm glad it was my first true Godzilla on the big screen experince and I didn't have to wait long for it. G 2014 came close to being a proper American Godzilla film to me but it still had some problems that irked me. KOTM had problems but I feel finally nailed what little kid me was expecting to see in the first place when going to see a big budget American Godzilla film. Just sucks it came 21 years late, but late is better than never. Talk about bitter sweet.

People still go off of the ‘98 Godzilla? Most people I see are more familiar with the more traditional Godzilla, haven’t really seen people talk about ‘98.
