Same as Kiryu or the original could've, if his Godzilla had a magical weak spot that just need to have a cable plugged into it and zapped.

I think I posted earlier about how the film made me fall asleep but I did give it a rewatch a couple weeks ago. Not the worst of the Heisei series, but definitely not the best. All I gotta say.

For some odd reason despite Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II being one of the most Godzilla heavy films in the franchise it sure doesn't feel like it.

OK.
While I do think the original Daikaiju Baran is superior to the American reformatting "Varan The Unbelievable", there is one advantage that the US version did that is better than the Japanese.
In the US version, Myron Healy's character is conducting experience with salt water and is specifically testing the lake that Varan emerges from. There is at least some what of a logical connection there.
In the original version, a search for butterflies leads to getting Varan in the story. Uh...what? What do butterflies have to do with a monster at the bottom of a lake? (Doing my best Ron Burgandy impression) My, the escalated quickly. The butterfly research almost feels like it belongs in a completely different movie.

I don't want any sequels to Shin Godzilla, I want it to be left alone as its own film. A sequel would only take away from it IMO

Re: Kaiju Fan Confessions
It bugs me whenever fans superlatively describe kaiju battles as "territorial struggles for dominance".
Virtually every kaiju film has a very specific motivation for why each monster wants to fight and its never that.
I mean come on, Showa kaiju are way too smart for that.

Re: Kaiju Fan Confessions
I’d say the sole exception is in the opening of GRA, but other than that you’re right. A majority of fights are coerced by humans, or aliens, or monsters like Orga, Megaguirus, have very specific reasons for going after Godzilla.Ivo-goji wrote:It bugs me whenever fans superlatively describe kaiju battles as "territorial struggles for dominance".

I feel like the whole “dominance” bullshit is the same thing is probably peddled by Dino furries or whatever or people who say ALPHA seriously.
I guess I hate the discussion of box office figures, unless it’s an analysis post release of why it bombed. I find it incredibly cynical, and quite honestly it’s annoying seeing these discussions carry over into a main discussion thread.
I also love how whenever a movie is set to flop or do bad, everyone acts like they’re suddenly experts in box office analysis and economics. In the case it does bomb, oh my, congrats for stating the obvious, and it’s not like you saying it’s going to bomb is going to make it bomb harder, or bomb any less.

Seconded. It's incredibly annoying to see people spam "This movie will bomb!" over and over again and even worse when they start throwing out other movies coming out around the same time in a desperate attempt to play economist.LSD Jellyfish wrote: I guess I hate the discussion of box office figures, unless it’s an analysis post release of why it bombed. Re: Kaiju Fan Confessions
Honestly, I think the battles for dominance happen a lot more with kaiju fans than with kaiju. (Case in point- just ask the question in any thread, which is better, Shin or G14, and watch the forum burn itself to the ground. Or "Was The Last Jedi great or terrible?" for that matter.). We all have favorites and least favorites- and in a number of cases "Why don't you like this like I do?"s or even "Why DO you like this terrible thing?"s. But in the end, we have to admit that, much as we want the whole world to share our opinion, it is just our opinion, and other people's subjective enjoyment of the film is not something we can argue down. It goes against our instincts for some reason, but it's a reality we have to acknowledge.
'BUT... if there was a way to objectively prove this movie is good/bad/etc.' our brains whisper, 'then we don't have to accept that reality. We can prove that our opinion is actually, factually-supported right.'
And hence, I think, the majority of discussion of box office, rottentomatoes scores, and academy awards. They're our way of trying to 'prove' the quality or lack thereof of a movie we otherwise want to champion or denigrate, but lack the objective evidence to persuade others to abandon their own opinions on.

That's why it's best to just accept that your opinion isn't everyones. I feel that variety of ideas and opinions is what makes these communities and discussions good.
